Is it piracy if you use a recipe that someone else gave you from a recipe subscription service like Hello Fresh?

At least in the U.S., recipes are basically not copyrightable. You need to add a significant amount of writing to a "list of ingredients" and "set of directions" before you can copyright it. Cook books are copyrightable because they're generally considered to meet the threshold.

In a similar vein, you can't copyright a chemical reaction, math, or facts. There are apps that scrape recipes from sites, like Whisk, and they're perfectly legal. To get around this, websites will have things like "click here to see full recipe," to mess with the bots. It's also why KFC has to protect their spice blend, theres nothing stopping copy cats if it was released.
