He called them out on caring about abortion, but absolutely ignoring the church's other social teachings. Paul Ryan claiming to be an objectivist and a catholic for instance.
It was very deliberate - they undermined his legitimacy because his emphasis on social responsibility was damaging.
I've never seen anything controversial in his encyclicals. You should read them for yourself.
