i wanted to point out how wrong this map is. where i live, the wooded areas here in the winter tends to be brown and grey, but this map suggest a lot of green for my area. wearing camo suggested here would stand out . it's funny just how often /k/ gets things wrong.
This is true, they're also way too focused on mil-standard stuff, they forget about great retired camo designs. According to this map modern woodland camo will be more effective than the faded Serbian jacket I always wear and am effectively invisible in (i never understood black and tan accents, they always contrast really badly imo). Overall ham-fistedness and lack of creativity tells me that I should figure out what's good to me instead of listening to people posting maps from their basement office in New Mexico.

yeah, i would agree that you should take a look at the areas you want to hide in and go based on personal observations. and i also dont get the tan accents stuff, especially in wooded areas with lots of green, brown, and grey.
i also agree how you pointed out their obsession with milspec since i know in my area i never seen hunters using mil spec stuff, instead it is off the shelf civilian stuff.
In a perfect world the Marines wouldn't have been faggots and copyrighted MARPAT so it could have been the default US camo avoiding the plague of ACU (the most disrespectful thing to happen to the US military since Jane Fonda). Multicam isn't universal hence the variants of it.
Thankfully, you can find NWU Type II gear from multiple companies like London Bridge Trading and Born Primitive.
The Marine Corps copyrighted MARPAT, because that's one of the few things they actually sunk their own money for R&D into; the other being the V-22 Osprey, and that thing was a fucking money sink.

Shame the USMC is too busy on branding to not want all of America’s service members to have an objectively good camo.
Issuing Coyote Brown carriers is retarded as shit too.
How can you copyright something that the American tax payers paid for directly? All it takes is an executive order to tell the Marines to quit bogarting an effective camo.
Personally, I'm more partial for the NWU Type II and III over MARPAT.

It really depends where you are. Here's a good example of how it works in dry brush in the winter in a more southern climate. Think like the kind of environment one would use the civvy duck hunting reed camo in.
I mean I'm a big fan of desert DPM, and all british camos, however the DDPM pattern really doesn't work well. When the british soldiers were using it, most would opt for using coyote brown and ranger green gear instead of their issued DDPM patterned gear. I'm also pretty sure that units that were more familiar with close combat (E.G. RMCP) were issued gear in different camo too.
using other camos with gear instead
DDPM was also adapted to only work in the desert (e.g. they figured out that if they tinted the camo slightly pink it would blend in better from a far distance) and not any other enviroment, it was a camo which was rushed in prep for the war in the middle east. Looks cool but not a good camo [/SPOILER]

Not to be contrarian but there could of been a general disinterest in using the provided kit because it wasn't comfortable or practical to use. They or their unit could of bought something else that was way more comfortable. I've seen pictures of SEALs and Navy EOD using multicam plate carriers while wearing NWU Type II uniforms. They may not of liked the NWU Type II plate carriers in inventory and opted to buy something else.
The green DPM jacket with the DDPM trousers drips hard though.
