A bill introduced to make caste discrimination illegal in California is set to come up for discussion in the state assembly this week. Savita Patel, a California-based independent journalist, speaks to those supporting and opposing the bill becoming a law.

Sukhjinder Kaur*, a nurse at a hospital in California, works long and tiring hours serving patients. But whenever it's break time, things become oppressive.

She is a Dalit (a community that is placed at the bottom of India's deeply discriminatory caste hierarchy) and says she often faces casteist insults from her South Asian colleagues.

Dalit rights activists say scores of caste-oppressed Californians face housing, educational, professional, and social discrimination.

In March, Senator Aisha Wahab, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party, authored and introduced the SB-403 bill - legislation that seeks to add caste as a protected category in the state's anti-discrimination laws alongside gender, race, religion and disability.

The bill was passed by the state's senate in May with a 34-1 vote. If it goes through in the state assembly, California will become the first US state to ban caste discrimination.

"Nurses from upper castes pass slurs about chamars [a pejorative term for Dalits] being dirty and polluting," says Ms Kaur, who is among those who are in favour of the law.

In February, Seattle became the first city in the US - and outside South Asia - to outlaw caste discrimination, generating momentum for the legislation in California. It is being propelled by the same broad multi-faith, inter-caste, multi-racial coalition of over 40 American and international Dalit and human rights activists and organisations, led by California-based Equality Labs.

California has a large South Asian diaspora and is home to some of the world's biggest tech companies.

The state is home to more than half of the 500,000-plus Sikh population in the US and gurudwaras (Sikh temples) in California have been mobilising momentum to outlaw caste discrimination.

Two of the community's largest advocacy groups - The Sikh Coalition and Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund - support the bill. Among Sikhs, it is the Ravidasia community - the largest Dalit community in the state with approximately 15,000-20,000 members - which is advocating for the bill at grassroots level.

Renu Singh, who follows the Ravidasia tradition and is also a women's rights activist, has been urging women to speak about their own experiences of caste discrimination and those they see around them so that lawmakers understand the gravity of the issue.

Data from an Equality Lab study shows that one in four caste-oppressed people from the South Asian American diaspora have faced physical and verbal violence; one in three has faced discrimination in education, and two out of three have experienced workplace discrimination.

It was the first extensive study of caste distribution and its effects in the US and had over 1,500 respondents. The findings, published in 2018, say that those from "lower castes" fear retaliation and worry about being "outed" and hence "hide their caste".

However, a significant section of the Indian diaspora rejects caste discrimination claims.
Deepak Aldrin, a San Francisco-based Dalit activist is not in favour of the bill. "I've lived here for 35 years. No Hindu has ever asked me what caste I belong to," he says.

The bill is meeting strong opposition from many Indian-American individuals, religious and professional groups, who argue that even though it does not specifically name their religion, it will "discriminate against Hindus, their places of worship and even make them less hiring worthy".

They say the existing laws in California are sufficient to address any discrimination and are mobilising the community to urge their lawmakers to disallow the legislation to proceed.

Many businesses and Hindu temples under HinduPACT - an American Hindu grassroots advocacy initiative - have appealed to California lawmakers to reject the bill. Its convenor Ajay Shah says that the legislation is "deeply flawed, ill-intentioned and targets children and youth from the Indian subcontinent and those who follow the Hindu dharma [Hinduism]."

Suhag Shukla, co-founder and executive director of the Hindu American Foundation, says this bill is already creating an "undesirable" awareness about caste. She says she has been "hearing inappropriate queries from workers, especially in tech, who are being asked about their caste by non-South Asians". She says if this becomes a pattern, it can be grounds for ethnicity-based harassment.

The foundation has sued the state in a federal court for an "unconstitutional definition of caste" and has also challenged the addition of caste to its non-discrimination policy, saying that it "singles out one community for ethnic profiling and additional policing".

Those opposing the bill say they are also perplexed as to how the state plans to identify an individual's caste since it's a very complex issue, .

The bill, Ms Wahab explains, does not include details for identifying caste, similar to other protected categories.
"There is no language on how caste will be determined. This is simply an anti-discrimination bill. When somebody takes a matter up to the courts, that is usually when subject matter experts are engaged, the type of discrimination potentially that has taken place [is investigated]."

Ms Wahab says she has received "death threats" after proposing the bill. She now faces a recall campaign and a possible re-election. She adds that the "visceral reaction" to the bill is "disheartening" and has urged Californians to read the bill.
"Whether you're upper caste or lower caste, it does not matter, it will protect you as well," she says.

California moves to provide surrogates to gay male couples in the name of 'fertility equality'​

California Bill SB 729 seeks to redefine "infertility" to be a status, as opposed to a medical condition. Changing the definition to "a person’s inability to reproduce either as an individual or with their partner without medical intervention" would classify gay men as infertile.

The bill, which passed the Senate last month, would require insurance companies to cover in-vitro fertilization procedures. With the change in definition, this would also include forcing the firms to cover surrogacy for gay males.

Co-author of the bill Sen. Caroline Menjivar (D) said the bill "will ensure that queer couples no longer have to pay more out of pocket to start families than non-queer families." She continued, "This bill is critical to achieving full-lived equality for LGBTQ+ people, as well as advancing well-rounded and comprehensive health care for all Californians."

An organization called Men Having Babies boasted that the bill will "remove financial barriers" for gay men who wish to rent a woman's womb to have a child who has the DNA of one of the males in the relationship.

The group states on its website, "Central to our fight for more equitable access to parenting options is what we know from our combined experiences: The anguish and yearning that same-sex couples and singles feel due to their inability to reproduce without medical intervention is equal to the anguish of heterosexual couples who suffer from 'medical infertility.'"

According to the Free Beacon, the opposition to SB 729 comes from California business and insurance groups who claim that it will raise insurance premiums by more than $330 million a year. Others point to the erosion of the traditional family structure.

"Under this bill, most insurance plans would be required to provide in vitro fertilization services based on someone’s relationship status or sexual orientation," said Emma Waters with the Heritage Foundation. "For single men or male same-sex couples, this means they would need to access a surrogate to carry their child. So the bill is outlining what adults have the right to, but nowhere does it address the needs of the child or safety concerns regarding the child either in IVF or in gestational surrogacy."

"This bill seeks to further erode the father, mother, and child nuclear family and make everyone in society pay for it to further a make-believe cause named 'fertility equality,'" said Greg Burt, director of the California Family Council. "The reason healthy singles and same-sex couples can't reproduce has nothing to do with infertility; it has to do with biology."

SB 729 would not affect any "entity that enters into a contract with the State Department of Health Care Services for the delivery of health care services pursuant to specified provisions."

A California mom has claimed her 19-year-old daughter was 'murdered by gender ideology' after the CPS removed her from her home because her parents didn't affirm her transgender identity.

Abigail Martinez stood before the California Judiciary Senate last week to blame gender ideology for taking her daughter Yaeli's life.

Yaeli Mozelle Galdamez died by suicide in September 2019, three years after CPS removed her from her mother's home.

In an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com in March 2022, Martinez accused her Los Angeles County school of encouraging Yaeli to take hormones and undergo gender reassignment surgery as a child, while failing to properly treat her severe depression.

'The school was telling her to go to these LGBT groups behind my back. She went from questioning her sexuality to her gender,' she said.

At the hearing last week, Martinez said her daughter was murdered by a gender ideology'.

'CPS took my daughter when she was 16 years old. It was helped by her public school counselor and LGBTQ group and another trans-identified girl.

'My daughter was taken from her loving home because the state of California claims I was abusive for not affirming her trans identity. I lost my daughter over a name and pronouns.'

Martinez said her daughter began questioning her gender identity when she entered high school and joined an LBGTQ+ club, where she met a friend who also identified as a boy and suggested Yaeli's depression could be from her actually being a boy, the mother told the Daily Signal last year.

She said the school did not inform her about her daughter's desire to transition and after she expressed concerns, Yaeli's school counselor recommended she'd be better off out of her parents' home.

She went on to say that her daughter had 'mental health issues' and was 'not a boy trapped in a girl's body.'

However, throughout her daughter's transitioning - where she was almost immediately put on testosterone - Martinez claimed to have called her daughter by her chosen names, Jay and Andrew, and did try to support her daughter.

CPS took Yaeli to a group home and only allowed her mother to visit her once a week for an hour. Martinez told the Daily Signal she did 'everything' to try and get custody of her daughter again, but was unable and now questions why so many of the state's adolescent transgender community ends up in foster care.

'Why are there so many transgender in foster care? Because this state take them from their families, tells them to run, then steals them. Parents are given one option to treat their distressed child: Affirm drugs and remove their healthy body part or else lose your child,' she told the Judiciary Senate.

'The abuse claim against me was finally dropped, but it was too late. The damage was done. By then, my daughter was in horrible mental and physical pain. My daughter knelt down in front of a train. She was murdered by gender ideology.'

The mother said it 'breaks my heart' that CPS took her daughter with the ideology that removing her from her 'loving' home would give her 'more [of a] chance to survive' and a lower chance of suicide.

While in CPS' custody, her daughter was put on hormones, went by the name Andrew, and 'adopted a dog' to make her happy, her mother claimed.

'Everything that they [did] didn't work,' Martinez told the Daily Signal.

'Against my consent, my daughter was given testosterone instead of therapy,' she told the Senate committee.

She told Fox News' Jesse Watters a California judge approved giving Yaeli testosterone. The mother claimed all her daughter had to do was sign off and watch a video before receiving her first shot.

'She believed all the lies she was told,' the mother said. 'She followed their agenda.'

Martinez said her daughter's depression got worse throughout treatment and she begged doctors to explain the damage being done to her child's body but was told nothing negative was happening.

Taking testosterone treatments can cause sleep apnea, weight gain, vaginal atrophy, diabetes, and hair thinning, among others, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Now, the mother is pushing for others to stop advocating for gender transitioning among children.

'I beg you, stop pushing gender ideology,' Martinez told the California committee. 'I don't want any parent to feel what I feel every day. Affirmation is not good for the health, safety, and welfare of any child.'

California man Ray Brewer sentenced for duping investors into Ponzi scheme claiming to turn cow manure into green energy​

A California man was sentenced Monday to almost seven years in prison for running a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme centering around cow manure.

Ray Brewer, 66, of Porterville stole nearly $9 million from investors after telling them he could turn cow dung into green energy, US Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

Between March 2014 and December 2019, the fraudster claimed his business CH4 Power built anaerobic digesters on multiple dairies in California and Idaho that were capable of using “microorganisms to break down biodegradable material and turn it into methane,” which can then be sold on the open market as green energy.

Brewer took his shareholders on tours of the dairies, where he supplied them with forged lease agreements, altered bank statements and doctored contracts with multinational companies that made it appear he secured revenue streams.

The scammer staved off shareholder concerns by sending fake pictures of the digesters under construction, as well as fake construction schedules, invoices for project-related costs, power generation reports and more.

Brewer even spoke to multiple newspapers detailing his business model, telling the Los Angeles Times in 2013 that many of his California dairy farming clients were very skeptical.

“Talk about apprehensive,” Brewer said of one man in the piece. “That was a little bit of an understatement.”
Despite their fear, investors forked over $8,750,000 for the revolutionary business that they expected to return them 66% of all net profits, as well as tax incentives.

“None of this was true,” Talbert’s office said.

The conman instead hid the funds in multiple bank accounts he opened under the names of different entities, family members and an alias, before using the money to buy “personal expenditures:” two plots of land that were 10 or more acres each, a 3,700 square foot custom home and new Dodge Ram pickup trucks.

When investors started catching on, Brewer assumed a new identity and fled to a Montana property that he had used the embezzled money to buy.

He was tracked down in November 2020, but tried to weasel his way out of trouble.

“Upon his arrest, Brewer told officers that they had the wrong man. He also claimed to have been in the Navy and recalled how he once saved several soldiers during a fire by blocking the flames with his body so that they could escape,” Tablert’s office stated.

“Brewer has since admitted that these were both lies meant to curry favor with law enforcement.”

He pleaded guilty in February to wire fraud, money laundering, and identity theft charges.

He was sentenced to six years and nine months behind bars, though he originally faced 20 years.

A brazen man with an apparent foot fetish who allegedly broke into a luxury Nevada resort on two separate occasions to cradle unsuspecting women’s feet as the victims slept is now in custody.

Mark Anthony Gonzales, 26, who is accused of being the infamous ‘Lake Tahoe Foot Fondler’, was arrested at his home in Atwater, California, on Tuesday, according to police.

Two women staying at the Club Wyndham South Shore hotel in Nevada each woke up at 4:30am on a Sunday and Monday, respectively, over the July 4th holiday weekend to find the creep “fondling their feet,” a statement from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office read.

“During the early morning hours between July 1-3, 2023, an adult male entered two Stateline resort condominiums by opening unlocked screen doors,” it continued.

“Once inside, he positioned himself at the foot of the bed and rubbed the feet of two separate adult females.”

The intruder bolted out of the resort rooms through their exterior sliding screen door after his victims awoke to the terrifying ordeal.

“Each female awoke from their sleep as the subject was rubbing their feet,” cops said.

“Once awake the females confronted the male subject and he fled the scene.”

The suspect was later identified via forensic techniques as Gonzales, police added.

Following his arrest, Gonzales was booked into the Merced County Jail for two counts of Burglary and two counts of Battery.

Gonzales will be held in the Merced County Jail on a fugitive warrant with a bail of $50,000 until he is extradited back to Douglas County, Nevada police said.

“I am extremely pleased that my Investigators were able to identify, locate, and arrest this individual,” Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley said.

“These types of crimes are especially alarming to a community, and being able to make an arrest allows the victims and community to feel safe again.”

He is also suspected by law enforcement of trespassing and stealing women’s shoes in California — and pleasuring himself while in the act.

DCSO Investigators said Gonzales was already known to local law enforcement in the Atwater/Merced County where he was the suspect of numerous crimes, including the theft of women’s shoes, trespassing, and sexual self-gratification during some of these incidents.

t appeared to DCSO Investigators that Gonzales’ crimes were escalating in nature, police said.

The two women — who were strangers to one another — both were staying on the ground floor of the resort and likely left their screen doors unlocked, cops said.

Remarkably, the foot squeezer remained on the lam for weeks despite striking while law enforcement had deployed increased personnel for the Fourth of July.

Both the Douglas Sheriff’s Office and the Nevada State Police increased patrol personnel for the holiday weekend throughout the area, including Nevada Beach, the waterfront access point directly in front of Club Wyndham South Shore.

It was not immediately clear how much prison time Gonzales could face if convicted or if he had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

Representatives for the sheriff’s office and the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office could not immediately be reached by The NY Post on Wednesday.

RENO, Nev. — A revoked Nevada license plate that was meant to “drive away” Californians is getting one last chance to go back on the streets.

The plate — which reads “GOBK2CA,” short for “Go back to California” — was recalled by the state Department of Motor Vehicles in May after it received a complaint, KOLO-TV first reported. Now the vehicle owner is appealing the recall and will have a hearing on Wednesday, according to the Reno-area news station.

A section of the Nevada Administrative Code applied to the recall prohibits defamatory references to a person or group.

“In this case, the defamed group is Californians,” DMV spokesperson Eli Rohl told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He adding that the department “regularly” turns down license plates that share the same message.

A special license committee meets every Monday to review reported license plates, before determining which ones violate Nevada statute.

The DMV reviewed more than 700 license plates from July 2022 to early March. Denied license plates include the puzzling “GGGGGGG,” the overly rude “U 1D1OT” and many no-so-subtle allusions to profanity, according to KLAS-TV in Las Vegas.
