They aren't necessarily wrong.
The fact is that every major company would have done this. What happened is that they made a serious marketing miscalculation because someone dumb and out of touch presented a dumb idea to the higher ups. Now the message has been thoroughly sent that that was a mistake.
It's like disciplining a dog or something, the punishment has to be proportional and they need to be rewarded for then doing the right thing, or all anyone learns from it is that you're psychotic and unreasonable and like taking your frustration about wider issues out on whoever you're able to.
