How many converts do these twits think they actually make? Seems to me the more they get to open their mouths, the more harm they get to do to themselves and their cause.

In order to truly have Free Speech, you must allow hate like this. You cannot say what is and is not acceptable based on how offensive something is. After all, if one thing is shut down for its offensiveness, where do we stop there? Anything can be shut down if its deemed offensive enough. That being said, he has crossed the line a few times and been arrested. He bitches about it on his blog.

These people don't make converts, but they DO galvanize people who are inclined to share these opinions. Rather than educate and reform these opinions, people are convinced that it's totally cool to think all rape is deserved and that women are second-class citizens. Not that it'd be easy to overhaul these opinions anyway, but it would probably help a tiny little bit to do so if there weren't so many people repeating the same vileness and reinforcing that rubbish.

Certainly there's a slippery slope argument to be made here, but there's also hate speech to consider. It could be considered inciting violence against women. Saying you don't believe women deserve equal rights or university educations and should wear a nun's habit all the time is one thing. It's a dick thing to say, but it's not on the same level of hate as saying women deserve to be raped. Which is, I should say, the part of this that I find the most objectionable and he shouldn't be allowed to yell it on college campuses.
 
To be fair usually if someone is causing an uproar and the community at large is against it, they'll get shoved off. Look at WBC. Free speech has consequences, if anything that's why it's great. Getting the community to discuss what is and isn't acceptable on their own turf seems more productive and human than letting the government decide and enforce what is too offensive.

I'm outraged by this guy, but I rather these issues be thrown into people's faces so they can talk about it, rather than pretend these opinions don't exist. Telling them to shut up won't stop them thinking it.

Yeah, but it's my experience those people are usually already pretty galvanized. And those are the sorts of asshats whose opinions are not going to be changed or educated in any event.

It's the unaware and indifferent that need to be inoculated against repugnant things like these jerks spew, and the only way to inoculate is through exposure. Let these assholes have their say (so long as all they do is talk), but make damn sure someone reasonable and intelligent is also present to point out how vile what they are saying is.

tl;dr: Fight their speech with more free speech. Only use calm, convincing, reasonable speech. After all, it's not hard to pick holes in these idiot's arguments. Trying to censor these assholes only adds weight to their drivel and makes them look like victims.

Well I don't think anyone listening in those videos needed to be led away. That was a pretty hostile audience if ever I've seen one. And if you lead a hostile audience away you really only leave room for a new, less aware audience to form. And again I don't think people need to be protected from assholes like this so much as they need to be educated about them. When people see and hear for themselves just how sickening is the shit these assholes advocate they can't help but reject it, and they'll be better able to identify and reject the same shit then next time when it might be delivered in a more attractive package.

Noisy, obnoxious, idiots like Dean Saxton do more harm to their cause than help. It's the quiet, calm, polite ones who cloak their bile in a veneer of false reasonableness we have to worry about.
