I think my 5th metatarsal is fractured. Can I just compress it back into healing, like with a broken toe? Boots and casts are dumb. I don't want to run to Urgent Care to get sent to the ER, just for a mild break that they can't do anything for.

If it's not a serious fracture (You will know, it will be very visible. If it's not visible, it's just a regular stress fracture.) , all you can do is rest on it. You will need to see some sort of podiatrist to get some sort of MRI, confirmation of severity, and confirmation of how to deal with it. I recently recovered from one on my fourth metatarsal. If it's just a minor fracture, you'll be stuck sitting for most of a 4-8 week period. Keep your foot elevated, ice it for pain occasionally, and you're gonna learn to love ibuprofen. That's all you can really do. You would definitely want a boot just for traversal purposes, because walking on it will worsen it and make healing take longer.

An urgent care that has an xray will be sufficient most of the time.

This. Don't try to just handle it yourself. Without an x-ray the average person can't tell the difference between a displaced vs. non-displaced fracture, nor the difference between a transverse vs. hairline vs. spiral fracture. If the fracture is bad enough you will get sent to the hospital because urgent care can only handle a very limited number of types of fractures. If you have a displaced spiral fracture, you are unlikely to avoid hardware, let alone a cast. The only type of fracture where they will just say "let it heal" is a very minor non-displaced transverse fracture or a non-displaced hairline fracture.
