A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Never said he was. I wanted to see what happened before the police dragged him off since per the Twitter post he was "just reading the Bible" which seemed unlikely. Oddly enough much like "he was just quoting the Koran" that's a fairly misleading statement.

Long and short of it is that as per usual the claim on Twitter is filled with bullshit. Of course if it had been done to someone quoting the Koran the screams of "racism!" if they were arrested would be audible from miles away so I've a degree of sympathy for the lack of even handedness.

Most of the people posting on here know the drill. A Twitter clip only a couple of minutes long that starts just as someone is being talked to by the police might as well start with a warning that says "this isn't the full story!" Apparently they had just confused her with someone else on the same street but impressively incompetent.

If he was not doing that alone, if he was adding his own content to that to the general tune of "and this is proof God disapproves of homosexual marriages, all you gays are going to hell etc. etc." then he is doing a bit more that just quoting the Bible or reading selected passages.
In a similar vein if he was quoting the commandment "Thou shalt have not other gods before me" then following up with something along the lines of "which is why all other religions should be barred from practicing and their followers be shunned as the damned heathens they are" he's not just reciting one of the ten commandments.

The people reporting him are still thin skinned whinners who would no doubt be completely fine with it if it was their views that were being bellowed at passers by and would be the ones filming their chosen speakers being hauled off. And as we saw even on the insanely extreme end of things like Abu Hamza there's often ludicrously more care taken with some faiths than others. Hell look at the mob of I believe Muslim men that got a school closed down relatively recently for a few days because they took umbrage about what one of the teachers said. Also the other preacher he was with had also been talking, and might have been the one actually saying the remarks that got reported since he was on first. He appears to be one Pastor Peter Simpson. Always nice to see a Creationist out and about. Here's one from his own site where it confirms that "Pastor Simpson pointed out that the word ‘homophobic’ was an artificial word devised purely for the purpose of shutting down any challenge to the LGBT agenda." on at least one of his prior bits of preaching. I can see what he's trying to say there, that the word is used to shut down discourse. He's not wrong. But if he wants to stand on a soapbox and scream "homophobia doesn't exist" people will react.

From the looks of the site them getting confronted by the police is fairly common. Personally I'd prefer the police do something more useful with their time than listening to paddy throwers offended by a pair of elderly preachers. But I don't believe they were just quoting the Bible without getting in a bit of gay bashing. Hell I've run into the ones handing out pamphlets explaining how people who are in wheelchairs are being punished by God more than a few times when out and about. I worked in my home city's anti-social behaviour unit for a short while, back when they were a new thing. It was, apart from me, staffed entirely by women. Now I don't want to say this explains everything, but... this explains everything, because the sort of woman who goes to work for a city council social policy unit is not going to be a very smart woman.
