A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

HS2 is a fucking shitshow, and it is a pointless project, and it is destroying whatever it's being pathed through. But these protestors almost make me want to support it out of spite. They can fuck off, they set off to whatever random spot they find, with no connection to it; plop down and make everyone who actually wants to try and preserve Englands Green space look like a fucking retard.

I watch that every now and again and it still makes me smile. My favourite part is when they jump the camera guy and he acts surprised when the crowd went after him as well.

My favourite bit is when one of them is pulled off the train into the crowd below. The look of sheer 'Oh shit!' on the guy's face before he disappears into the angry mob is hilarious.

In other news, Shamima Begum has been told to fuck off, she ain't coming back in.

I'm torn on the Shamima stuff. I feel we're kicking a can down the road with the actions taken regarding her when in fact we should have been addressing the issue of people being radicalised within the country and where the failings occurred (since top of the list will will be the families and the schools I'd wager). But that particular can will explode when kicked so I can sympathise with the government not wishing to set it off.

The Canning Town footage is perfect and remains one of the best things to ever watch.

Stopping her coming back into the country certainly helps the radicalisation problem, IMO. If she came back she'd be in prison for life and she'd likely attempt to spread her rhetoric to impressionable people. She's too dangerous to let back into the country, but in a different way to Islamist suicide-bombers. Preventing her from coming back to the UK doesn't stop us intervening with potential grooming and/or radicalisation.

She wouldn't be in prison for life (assuming you're talking in terms of never exiting it) but for a sufficiently impressive duration which will likely do nothing to deradicalise her and, upon her exit and during her time with other inmates, she may well act to radicalise others.
However she was still a UK citizen so to a degree she should be punished in the country she was from rather than us just stripping her of citizenship and going "not our problem."

I'm talking in terms of her specifically rather than other cases but it'll become applicable again I am sure. Of course it doesn't help she's on paper a good candidate for the activists to go "boo hoo, a teenage girl. Imagine if it happened to one of your own?"

Lmao if you think she'd even go to prison. Tons of 'em come back and are immediately given absolute freedom and taxpayer funded resources.
Sadiq doesn't even pretend the police know where they are or what they're doing.

It also creates the possibility of other countries stripping criminals citizenship of the place they reside or born in and ship them off for the UK to deal with since it's not their problem anymore but the UKs.

Also Scottish Labour have a new leader again. I think that's five leaders changed within a decade now.

How exactly would other countries "ship their criminals to the UK" after stripping them of citizenship?

Labour is in an awful state all over the UK so this doesn’t surprise me at all. Conservatives are the only legitimate competition SNP have at this point which is an odd turn of events.

Damn I actually wish the other one had won since had pledged to split Scottish Labour from UK Labour. And given she got over 40% of the votes it seems that was not a disliked choice.

Of course she's also vocally trans friendly in her campaign which given the state of some of the loudest voices speaking for that community in the UK makes me look at her cautiously.
