A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

You wonder if Brexit accelerated the demise of the woke gravy train?

You can't go crying to Brussels anymore screaming "HUMAN RIGHTS!" if you don't get permission to put up your lesbian statues.....?
We're still party to the european convention on human rights and still abide by the rulings of the european court of human rights, which was never an EU institution. The thing is, the ECHR often catches wokists out by ruling against them, assuming it doesn't just toss the case for inadmissability. It's rather less of an automatic win card than they want to believe.

Actually, don't we now have the ability to amend human rights locally via limiting ECHR case law in UK courts or the applicability of ECHR rights in certain situations? That's a double edged sword if I've ever seen one.

Remember Harry Dunn? His family's still pressing on trying to obtain justice after the shitty human who killed him fled back to the US;

She's still trying to get the civil case thrown out of the US courts claiming it should be a matter for the UK (you know, that country she refuses to return to?). By all accounts the judge thinks she sucks too but there's further attempts by her coming in March.

At least the informative rating is still a thing.

I hope she stubs her toe every morning. The same toe, on the same aching spot, until she's driven mad by her inability to avoid obvious obstacles.

Personally I would like this remark from the judge to be tattooed in reverse on her forehead and put on her tombstone;

"Full acceptance of responsibility entails facing those harmed by her negligence and taking responsibility for her acts where they occurred, in the United Kingdom."

But I may have an unreasonably biased dislike for people who murder people with their cars and then escape responsibility.

I think that's the biggest complaint here. The statues are fucking ugly and don't even resemble people. Do we not know what they looked like so some vague abstract is all we have? No? Then why do some weird abstract art piece of them? Another issue is that they were you know, pirates, and gazing peacefully out to sea is not something pirates are particularly known for. A bas relief plaque of the two of them drinking as a bunch of dudes are passed out on the floor around them would be a much more appropriate homage to infamous pirates instead of that.
Why are pirates, a type of criminal generally considered hostis humani generis and subject to death, somehow a better symbol than slavers? Just because they were carpet munchers?

Unironically yes when you're referring to the sort of wokists who are pushing for this sort of thing. "Woo, transgressed gender boundaries!" matters a lot more to them than the body count and lost livelihoods.

I would also add, lots of pirates were involved in the slave trade as well. Slaves were a valuable cargo, hence pirates were likely to smuggle/steal them as they would anything worth money.

I like how there is little evidence they were gay as well, but two ladies together, must have been feminists who wanted to transgress against the evil white male dominated banditry industry.

The evidence they are gay seems to come from a single academic, a graduate of Kings College London, Professor Kate Williams. From her record she seems to know her stuff but she also seems to have a bit of a desire to be a celebrity academic so how much concrete evidence there is about the pirates doing the horizontal tango as opposed to them not doing that is debatable.

Essential it's the equivalent of a gossip tabloid screaming "celebrities seen with each other, are they banging!?" It's not impossible and probably true but it's unlikely to be based off facts. Couldn't find the specific research where the Professor claimed this but I also did not look too hard.

Reading the BBC news website this morning (I know, I know), I see that Covid cases dropped massively in January, but "virus levels are still high".

This quote is in a sentence which states that one person in two hundred is testing positive. What the fuck?! What do they consider a "low rate". Less than 0.5%??

Sure seems like a great time to initiate quarantine hotels for incoming flights and destroy the tourism and hospitality industries. Fucking cancel this bullshit lockdown already.

They say it means the lockdowns are effective, but ignore that the same drop is happening worldwide, regardless of whatever measures any particular country has put into place. I've no idea if everyone has adopted the WHO's less sensitive threshold for testing or if it's just the virus burning itself out again, but I know for sure this lockdown bullshit had nothing to do with it. Yet people will swallow the propaganda anyway...

So they should find a couple lesbian slavers if these weren't. After all what could be more transgressive of gender roles than being the vilest sort of criminal imaginable?

It happens, in 1987 Matthew Broderick caused a car crash in Ireland that left a mother and daughter dead (NYT headline from the time read Matthew Broderick injured).

He claimed that the couldn't remember what happened, but it was obvious to everyone that he had been driving on the wrong side of the road.

The only reason that story is in the news, is because she lost her nerve and fled the country. If she had just said nothing and got a decent solicitor she'd have been fine. Once she ran it got press attention.

It isn't very common but this is the kind of case where I think we'd actually extradite to the UK under treaty. What she is accused of is unambiguously illegal in both countries and has turned into an embarrassing international incident.

So Boris has released his roadmap for lifting the lockdown, and unsurprisingly it's fucking bullshite. Mid April to get shops open again, and June before restrictions are lifted entirely, and that's assuming shit doesn't get worse again before then, which it will because they're insisting on forcing schools to open first, and we all know kids won't follow the fucking guidelines and will start another spike the government will use to justify extending this shit even further.

If they dont lift the lockdown and try and get some sense of normalcy by the summer we'll probably start seeing real signs of civil unrest and rioting especially trying to coop people indoors during the summer.

Hmm. Hadn't read the actual documents and was worried they were actually gonna do it for a bit. See you guys in 2025!
Nicola isn't even bothering to pretend it's gonna happen.
