A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Sadiq Khan has called Extinction Rebellion activists "allies" after they staged a 10-day protest which caused disruption across London.

In a meeting with the activists today, the London Mayor said he and the group could "work together" in lobbying the government on climate change.

"We are with you in relation to lobbying the government government in relation to powers and resources, and we see you as allies in relation to lobbying the government."

He added: "We can work together."

Gavin Williamson has been sacked as defence secretary following an inquiry into the leak of information from the National Security Council.

Downing Street said the PM had "lost confidence in his ability to serve" and Penny Mordaunt will take on the role.

The inquiry followed reports over a plan to allow Huawei limited access to help build the UK's new 5G network.

Mr Williamson, who has been defence secretary since 2017, continues to deny leaking the information.

Report
The inquiry into the National Security Council leak began after a Daily Telegraph report on warnings within cabinet about possible risks to national security over a deal with Huawei.

The National Security Council (NSC) is made up of senior cabinet ministers and its weekly meetings are chaired by the prime minister, with other ministers, officials and senior figures from the armed forces and intelligence agencies invited when needed.

It is a forum where secret intelligence can be shared by GCHQ, MI6 and MI5 with ministers, all of whom have signed the Official Secrets Act.

There has been no formal confirmation of Huawei's role in the 5G network and No 10 said a final decision would be made at the end of spring.

Huawei has denied there is any risk of spying or sabotage, or that it is controlled by the Chinese government.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! PARLIAMENT IS A COMPLETE FUCKIN' CIRCUS!

Nah why would the Chinese spy on us we've been nothing but the closest of friends with them...i mean its not like we broke the Qing Dynasty over Tea and Opium or anything....

The bloke was a fucking idiot anyway... suggested stupid shit like strapping artillery to fucking tractors, disguising mobile missile defence systems as Coca-Cola lorries and transforming old commercial ferries into beach assault crafts.

Lol, what? Did he say or do anything else that was exceptional? Also, how did he get that position to begin?

I have no idea how he got the job, he used to be a fireplace salesman. Always gaffe prone and said stupid shit all the time..

Gavin Williamson responds:

Dear Prime Minister,

It has been a great privilege to serve as Defence Secretary and Chief Whip in your Government. Every day I have seen the extraordinary work of the men and women of our armed forces, who go to incredible lengths to defend our country.

I am sorry that you feel recent leaks from the National Security Council originated in my Department. I emphatically believe this was not the case. I strenuously deny that I was in any way involved in this leak and I am confident that a thorough and formal inquiry would have vindicated my position.

I have always trusted my civil servants, military advisers and staff. I believe the assurances they have given me.

I appreciate you offering me the option to resign, but to resign would have been to accept that I, my civil servants, my military advisers or my staff were responsible: this was not the case.

Restoring public confidence in the NSC is an ambition we both share. With that in mind I hope that your decision achieves this aim rather than being seen as a temporary distraction.

As I said there has been no greater privilege than working with our armed forces and I will continue to stand up for our service personnel and the superb work they do.

Yours,

Gavin

As a Russian myself, I think getting the UK attack tractors to “deal with the Russian threat” is a great idea.

This poor, wonderful, innocent young man’s firing is a travesty, and I hope that the British finally realise all the good he could have done for the country.

Oh look, a totalitarian shithole accepting help and infrastructure from another totalitarian shithole.

What's interesting is Gavin's comments on Ferry yards made sense.

In that the government wants BAE to go fuck itself and this is why all Royal Navy vessels suddenly became able to be built in modules, obstensibly to "spread the work around" it's mostly there to deny BAE it's Clyde shipyard monopoly.

You can build a half decent corvette in a Ferry Shipyard as they're at around 200m in length and Ferry Yards typically build ships in the 150-210m range.
