A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The Quran doesn't endorse perpetual war, the verses which advocate violence have conditions attached to them that the Islamaphobes often fail to mention.
This is strange to hear. Please bring up these violence-qualifying verses of the Quran. I don't want to sound Islamophobic before I criticize Islam, obviously.

I get 123 hits searching for the word merciful in the Quran.

And every single one of those are only as translations of a title of Allah, ar-Rahim (with Surah 48:29:9 as the only exception), which are meaningless in the context of Jihad.

Quran (2:244) - "Then fight in the cause of Allah, and know that Allah Heareth and knoweth all things."

In context:

Have you not considered those who went forth from their homes, for fear of death, and they were thousands, then Allah said to them, Die; again He gave them life; most surely Allah is Gracious to people, but most people are not grateful.
And fight in the way of Allah, and know that Allah is Hearing, Knowing.
Who is it that will offer of Allah a goodly gift, so He will multiply it to him manifold, and Allah straitens and amplifies, and you shall be returned to Him.

There is not upon the blind any guilt or upon the lame any guilt or upon the ill any guilt [for remaining behind]. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger - He will admit him to gardens beneath which rivers flow; but whoever turns away - He will punish him with a painful punishment.
Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muhammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest
And much war booty which they will take. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.
Allah has promised you much booty that you will take [in the future] and has hastened for you this [victory] and withheld the hands of people from you - that it may be a sign for the believers and [that] He may guide you to a straight path.
And [He promises] other [victories] that you were [so far] unable to [realize] which Allah has already encompassed. And ever is Allah, over all things, competent.
And if those [Makkans] who disbelieve had fought you, they would have turned their backs [in flight]. Then they would not find a protector or a helper.
[This is] the established way of Allah which has occurred before. And never will you find in the way of Allah any change.

No, I'd been following the Christchurch thing and I liked the way that Null gave the NZ police the finger.

And all of it seems to be referring to a title, ya dingus.

We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.

Surah Al-Anbiya 21:107

What's the point of a Hajib if you still are dressing for attraction and beauty?

Isnt the whole point to be a boner killer and remove lust?
Correct.
Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Whoever wears a garment of fame and vanity in this world, Allaah will clothe him in a garment of humiliation on the Day of Resurrection, then He will cause Fire to flame up around him

Also, anything which draws attention like that is considered an "adornment" and thus improper (see al-Noor 24:31).

I don't think ANY religion is "peaceful", but do it for all or none.
this

there must be so many quietly embarrassed people shuffling into churches this weekend in London
God, what a cucked country. To think this was the same country that rule over 1/3 of the world, now turn into this?

karma? didn't they used to run India?

At this point, after Christchurch, I'm not even remotely surprised by what happened. It's like the entire Commonwealth has lost their common sense and rationale. At this point it's sad to watch, not even close to angering anymore.

Also,
No, I'd been following the Christchurch thing and I liked the way that Null gave the NZ police the finger.

Yeah no. You're just here for religious slapfighting.

Wearing something like that is fine in a Western nation, but if she tried that in a Muslim majority country, I’d imagine she’d at least get flogged. I still don’t get how people will twist Islam to be pro women or feminist. In practice, the religion itself is probably one of the most restrictive on women’s rights.

All you managed to do was insult me for pointing out the obvious.
Obvious, meaning what you would like people to think happened.

Getting back on topic, why do you think that Islam is in any way peaceful or merciful?
Because it endorses reason like the common law does and because it connects with the wisdom teachings of the gospels.

How is Islam reasonable? A woman’s testimony in court is only viewed as half of a man’s. A woman also needs to be chaperoned by a male family member at all times. In Iran, gay men are forced to transition into women or risk death. In Muslum majority countries, the hijab is not a choice and you can get punished for not wearing one. This is only a fraction of how unreasonable Islam is.

The Quran likens people who don't use reason to beasts. It endorses other sources of information and leaves it up to the reader to make the connections.

A woman’s testimony in court is only viewed as half of a man’s.
Yes, it's about the same in Judaism.

A woman also needs to be chaperoned by a male family member at all times.
That varies with culture. The core gender roles involve protection of women, but Islamic culture doesn't always honour those core roles.

In Iran, gay men are forced to transition into women or risk death.
Sharia law is politicized, especially regarding punishment.

In Muslum majority countries, the hijab is not a choice and you can get punished for not wearing one. This is only a fraction of how unreasonable Islam is.
Islam, like any religion, has traditions which are political in origin. The core teaching from the Quran is modesty, and that can be interpreted mean anything from a headscarf with conservative clothes to a full burka.
