A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Fuck me, ain't you the hilarious Tommy Shill? Try and take a deep breath before posting you stupid sped.

Ok, so, good news for people here: The BBC is currently bleeding 850,000 licence fee payers a year. Or an eye watering £127,500,000. Which, if continuing with this trend will be very much unsustainable unless it course corrects. Which a recent BBC Panorama camera crew recently suppressed was a bunch of BBC folks at Salford talking about how vile the plebs and general public were (ya know, the people who pay their salary).

This particular investigation was mysteriously pulled for barely given reasons.

But you will note that there's not as many dick riders for Tommy here in this thread as when he was previously convicted. Largely because most of the Burger-Kiwis who piled in screaming about "FREE SPEECH REEEEEEEEEEE" were not well versed in Tommy's fucking abject stupidity and constant attention whoring.

Once this was explained that he's not some champion of justice but a fraud who's sort of tripped into pretending he's the greatest martyr to ever exist in british political history while being nearly outright pampered when in prison (when he's not faking a hunger strike by simply skipping Breakfast and Lunch) any support he might have got has bled away.

Also being near Sargon of Akkad and other crazies as Batten rode his dick has definitely killed UKIP as a serious british political force to the point Farage has fucked off with most of the UKIP MEPs to form The Brexit Party.
TBH Robinson is an ideal specimen of how the whole "if you try to demonise and silence somebody, they will become exponentially more popular and influential" thing works even with the most boring and basic ass IRL autists and charlatans. If the media/activist clowncar just reacted with a "meh whatever" when he had his initial public chimpouts and did not slather him with horror stories and calls for arrest/censoring then he would be an order of magnitude less well known/followed than fucking chris chan.

Schools should teach a language to pupils from age five to 18 to reverse a "disastrous" decline in language skills, say MPs and peers.

It follows a BBC investigation showing falls of between 30 and 50% since 2013 in the numbers taking language GCSEs in some areas of England.

Head teachers warned the aim might not be realistic because of teacher shortages and funding pressures.

Ministers said the picture in England had improved slightly since 2010.

This improvement in the overall proportion taking a language GCSE, thanks largely to Spanish and Mandarin, hides a collapse in numbers studying German and French.

Between 2010 and 2018 in England, the numbers of German GCSEs fell from 57,806 to 39,941 and at A-level from 5,055 to 2,785, according to the Department for Education.

The all-party parliamentary group on modern languages called for cross-government action in a recovery plan published on Monday.

Jean Coussins, a crossbench peer and joint chair of the group, said: "We are complacent. In the 21st Century speaking only English, is as much of a disadvantage as speaking no English at all."

The report pointed towards a declining proportion of online content in English, and said that according to the British Council, 75% of the world's population does not speak English.

The group is calling for a range of new qualifications, amid concerns that it is seen as harder to get a good grade in GCSEs than other subjects.

"One of myths we need to bust is [that] languages are just for the top set," said Baroness Coussins, pointing out that in a number of other countries the expectation is that everyone can learn another language.

But Geoff Barton, from the Association of School and College Leaders, said that while head teachers supported the ambition to encourage language learning, it was important to be realistic.

He said given funding constraints and the difficulty in recruiting specialist teachers, "it is hard to see how schools could fulfil an objective to ensure all young people learn a language from ages five to 18".

The plan also suggests tax breaks for smaller businesses as part of promoting life-long learning of languages.

Baroness Coussins said: "We're at a crunch point. When we're faced with the practical challenge of negotiating dozens of new free trade agreements, we'll discover speaking English is not enough."

That call was backed by Dr Adam Marshall, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce.

He said: "Language skills lead to a better understanding of how people and cultures operate, and that understanding is often the key to closing a business deal."

'Currency of 21st Century'
The German Ambassador to the UK, Peter Wittig, expressed his dismay in a tweet following the BBC's report last week.

In response to the parliamentary recovery plan Mr Wittig told the BBC that the decline in Britons learning German was "deeply worrying".

He added: "Speaking languages and engaging with other cultures are the currency of the 21st century.

"In today's inter-connected world, communicators and bridge-builders are needed as never before."

The German ambassador said not only did learning a language open doors in fields from finance to engineering, but it "encourages friendship, trust and understanding across borders".

Saddened to read BBC analysis on continued decline of foreign language learning in the UK. Stark drop in German/French is worrying to observe, especially as language skills will only become more important.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-47334374 …

Last week, the Minister for Schools Standards in England, Nick Gibb, said that since 2010, the proportion of children taking a language at GCSE had risen from 40% to 46% in 2018.

He said the government was "determined to see this rise further", and was taking a range of measures to tackle this - such as creating a new network of schools that excel in the teaching of languages to share their expertise and best practice with others.

What kind of weirdo actually wants to talk to the French?

When I read the headline I thought they they trying to save the English language from going into decline.

As my dad once told me how do you expect some one to give a shit about learning a new language if they don't care about the one they speak everyday.

My blazing hot take is this. Its not a surprise that these skills are droping when it is likely that most of these kids don't want to bother learning a skill they would hardly use. I think most childrens out look on the world is pretty bleak. They most likely are convinced that they are never leaving where they are born and won't have an actual opportunity to travel.

So when can we expect the language of the Kebabs and Chinks to overtake the great language that is english? If so, what's gonna happen to programming? Cuz I don't want to learn Chinese just to do some weird ass programming shit.

I doubt that any educational campaign will do much to arrest these trends, given that languages are hard to learn, especially once you leave childhood and have other things to do (along with a variety of biological changes, probably). So most people will avoid learning languages, when possible. Germans, the French and other Europeans have been busy Anglizing their public spheres, making it less necessary to learn their languages. It is surprising that the people aren't learning those languages ase much?

Spanish probably does well because it has a reputation of being an "easy" language, Britons like going to Spain for holidays, and it seems more "important" because spoken in more countries (even though those countries are often terrible places that everybody is trying to leave). Chinese is popular because China Economy Strong and China #1, even though it is hard as balls for an English-speaker to learn, and the Chinese are often unwilling to do business with foreigners with strong Chinese-language skills (can't rip them off effective with your code-talking).

French lesson:

Oon beer sivvu play = give us a pint (advanced: pression = draft)

Seriously though, there's no need to learn other languages. Just speak English with the accent of the country you're visiting, and locals will magically be able to understand you (example: where-o is the beach-o, senor?)

Oh la la. Sacre bleu. Mais non.

Languages GCSE/A level are absolute piece-of-piss walk in the park stuff, schools who are interested in improving their results should be herding kids into them.

I thought it was about how godawful the language skills of the British because no one can talk English nowadays between Twitter retards and all other manner of language butchery. Oh and Pakis and other gimmegrants who don't want to speak English anyway, and maybe some 100 year old Welsh grandmother.

How are they supposed to learn other languages when they butcher their own language?
"Yeah bruv, that shit is lit fam, that girl is peng man"...what the fuck is wrong with these people?

Assortative mating amongst the poor and educationally subnormal, who are increasingly the same group in the UK.

When we talk about 'generational poverty', this is actually what we mean, but you can't come right out and say it.

The Jeremy Kyle class mates only with its own kind, and pretty much any genetic hiccup of normal intellect is held back so significantly by being raised by the actively learning disabled that it cripples their educational attainment. This is actually exactly why the Blair Government established the legendary Sure Start centres and 15/30 hours a week funded nursery placements for 3 and 4 year olds. It was to get the children of the retarded poor away from their mothers and into environments that prioritised learning opportunities.

In short? It's not. While Mandarin is on the rise in the West, English is on a hilariously skyrocket rise in the East. To the point they'll take pretty much any native speaker not even out of their Bachelors to go teach it to higher echelon Chink and Jap kids. The higher echelon who will become party apatchariks, leaders, and the next generation of the Billionaire's set who will be doing business deals.

Also, pretty much as stated, what's the point in German or many European Languages? The official language of the EU (and is likely to continue after we leave) is English. Most mainland Europeans learn it as a second language to the point I have now given up retaining my fluent French and conversational German.

When I was in France it seemed everyone could speak English, and when I was in Germany five years ago, the Germans would hear my accent or when I was talking with friends and summon the person who could speak it fluently.

I have two friends currently holidaying in Spain and Morocco. Both places speak fluent, easy English.

What I find shocking is how far the degradation of language has gone up the ladder. I have met and been told stories of people who were going through law school who speak like that. Unsurprisingly, they don't pass their advocacy examinations because no matter how hard the lawyers teaching them tried to hammer in the correct decorum and manner to address the judge. They can't get past 20-30 something years of speaking like a troglodyte.

Imagine sitting in a mock courtroom, playing as the judge and trying to figure out which guys to pass the course, and you have some dickhead playing as the lawyer you that your opinion is cool or lit? Thankfully, these guys are the exception, not the rule, but I have heard several accounts of this happening from people in the field of law and met one or two who do speak like that whilst pursuing that career.
