A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Am I the only one who's worried that they counted from 16 instead of 18? I don't know what the age of consent in the UK is, but that's still awfully young.
As someone else said, 16 is the nation age of consent in the UK. Although some of the other stats given I find question.

For instance, it says that the UK’s current number of adult married women is some nebulous number “less than 50%” ... but the number of adult married men in that same exact age bracket is 54%? That discrepancy is so big that can’t even be chalked up as including gay men, so either the UK has an inverted China issue where the female population vastly outnumbers the male population and this is single just due to scarcity, UK’s child bride issue is way worse than previous estimated, or whoever conducted this survey deliberately fudged their numbers to make this out to be some incel-tier “damn wimmens with their edumacations and their jerbs” instead of a generational trend.

I’m gonna go with the last one considering the article doesn’t link to the supposed survey they’re citing (yet don’t even name, let alone link to), and instead pulls the journalist equivalent of “My girlfriend lives in Canada, you don’t know her.”:
The survey, which is carried out regularly, is aimed at discovering facts about the way we live that are not revealed through traditional records and censuses.

Does he not have a chauffeur or a personal driver or anything? He's married to the queen, it's not like if he gave up driving he'd have to rely on the bus. There's enough staff working for the royals doing really stupid shit like filling the bath to a specific depth and making special food for the corgis, you'd think one of them could give him a lift.
Hm 97 year old german vs some english bloke? i would say the Prince is the better driver. you have to remember, brits arent allowed to drive more than 70 mph because they suck...

Philip's Greek.
Yeah, that why his last name was Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg till he married.
Greece was Ruled by German Kings for about 50 years.
His Family would be the most influential if kings had any power. They have the Throne of Denmark, Norway, the Queen of Spain, some family ties to Sweden, Germany and Russia.

Most people that age would not be allowed to, but Britain loves their precious "upper class" people.

I think it's based on eyesight.

In the UK, you have to renew your driving license every 3 years after 70, but provided you have no medical conditions which could prevent you from driving safely, you can still legally drive.

I had a relative who was still driving at 104, so age itself is not taken into consideration.

A bomb has exploded inside a car outside the courthouse in Londonderry.

The explosion occurred in Bishop Street at about 20:15 GMT on Saturday, shortly after police received a warning.

Officers were on the scene when the blast occurred. No one is believed to have been injured.

Police had just started evacuating nearby buildings, including a hotel, when the explosion took place. A cordon has been set up at the scene.

Local politicians have told the BBC that the vehicle was hijacked in Derry some time before the explosion.

An eyewitness told the BBC: "The remains of the car could still be seen burning in the middle of the road.

"A cordon has been set up around the scene and police are evacuating more buildings on Bishop Street."

In a statement issued on Facebook, the PSNI said: "As far as we know no one [is] injured."

However, they said that there is another car they "are not happy about" and are evacuating the area and advising residents in the area to make preparations to leave.

Local resident Greg McLaughlin said his windows shook with the force of the blast.

"It was very, very loud. I knew right away this was a bomb," he said.

"We knew it was quite close.

"You could see the ball of fire on the street. It sounded to me like a very significant blast. I haven't heard anything like it in Derry for quite a while."

At the scene, BBC reporter Dean McLaughlin
Businesses and other properties have been evacuated and the cordon on Bishop Street has been extended.

One business owner said she heard a bang and was lucky to be inside at the time. She said she could have been on the street minutes later.

Bishop Street is within Derry's famous city walls.

The PSNI has asked members of the public to stay away.

Colin Neill, chief executive of Hospitality Ulster, said the explosion had caused major disruption in the Bishop Street area of the city.

"This has to be condemned in its strongest terms, taking place on a Saturday evening when many people are out enjoying themselves.

"The loss of trade for the local hospitality sector and the impact that this will have on tourism and the local economy benefits no one."

The Northern Ireland secretary, Karen Bradley, said she was concerned at the reports coming from Londonderry and was "being kept informed by PSNI".

Sinn Féin MP Elisha McCallion said the incident had "shocked the local community".

"In particular, there are many elderly residents who live in the area who have been alarmed by this incident," she said.

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan tweeted: "Whoever is responsible for this explosion outside Bishop Street Courthouse in Derry clearly hasn't got the message that the people of Derry DO NOT want this on our streets."

The DUP MLA, Gary Middleton, described the incident as a "disgraceful act of terrorism".

_105253073_20190119_221737.jpg

His party leader Arlene Foster tweeted: "This pointless act of terror must be condemned in the strongest terms. Only hurts the people of the city.

"Perpetrated by people with no regard for life. Grateful to our emergency services for their swift actions which helped ensure there have been no fatalities or injuries."

The Irish tánaiste (deputy prime minister) Simon Coveney condemned the attack.

"There is no place and no justification possible for such acts of terror, which seek to drag Northern Ireland back to violence and conflict," he wrote on Twitter.

Well this is a bit of a throwback.

Props to @CWCissey for using Derry as opposed to "Londonderry" (as only tourists and loyalists still stuck in 1690 refer to it as that).

But in all seriousness, it's Northern Ireland so it could be anyone - besides from the damage it's an otherwise normal day in Derry.

I'm guessing the culprits are loyalists (maybe UDA lackeys), as they don't have the integrity to call ahead like the Ra did.

It says they did, though.

Willing to bet Real IRA as a warning to what no deal Brexit would look like. All the people voting Muslims didn't bother to either read the article or know their history.

Yeah, it seems that people just tend to jump straight to Muslims whenever something like this happens, as they don't bother to think about the context of it all. Islamic terrorism has little to no history in Northern Ireland at all.

Like most newspapers, the Daily Mail is sensationalist dribble that seeks to sell as many copies as it can to its naive, elderly demographic. They could have gone with "less people getting married" but that wouldn't be as incendiary, would it? When you single out a specific group, it's easier to shift blame and stir up resentment - the Mail loves making old people angry.

Its little brother is the Daily Express, which has headlines that alternate between "migrants did something bad again" or "new wonder drug to reverse aging discovered".
