A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The DUP won't turn on May, if purely because Corbyn made a mortal enemy of them with his attempt to convince Sinn Fein to take their seats at Westminister (twice).

Shit as she is, that could keep her safe.

Fuck, that was such a narrow vote - May survived by the skin of her teeth. All it would've taken to change that was if the DUP and a few rebel Tories had instead chosen to vote against May.

I think the DUP/ERG brigade realised that all they have to do is hold on for another ten weeks and we "crash out without a deal" regardless of anything else. But the Remainiacs / People's Voters have to actually push through primary legislation to get their coveted second referendum or extension or overturning of Article 50. Therefore keeping themselves inside the tent pissing out is less risky for them.

The funny thing is, I've been seeing some of the more extreme Brexiteers on social media shouting for the government to "invade" the Republic of Ireland as a "solution" to the border issue.

I mean, that is one way of dealing with the problem...probably skipping a few hundred steps before that, but it is an (autistic) option.

Only question I have is, who has been hired to look after Corbyn and put him on suicide watch after yet another failure to get his opponent out. He has this cockroach who keeps scoring own goal after own goal, and yet he can't seem to get her out.

Who says he doesn't want her to stay in to endure Brexit is completed?

The Duke of Edinburgh has been involved in a car crash, Buckingham Palace has said.

Prince Philip, 97, was not injured in the accident, which happened close to the Queen's Sandringham estate in Norfolk on Thursday.

Buckingham Palace said the crash involved another vehicle and police attended the scene.

The duke was driving a Range Rover and was pulling out of a driveway onto the A149 when the accident happened.

According to eyewitnesses, the car that the duke was driving overturned.

The eyewitnesses said they helped the duke out of the vehicle. He was conscious but very shocked and shaken, royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell said.

Nicholas Witchell added that two people in the other vehicle were treated for minor injuries, according to reports from Norfolk Police,

The duke is back at Sandringham and has seen a doctor.

The Queen and Prince Philip have been staying in at the estate since Christmas.

The duke retired from public life in August 2017.

His retirement came after decades supporting the Queen and attending events for his own charities and organisations.

Buckingham Palace calculated he had completed 22,219 solo engagements since 1952.

Since retiring from official solo duties, he has appeared in public alongside the Queen and other members of the royal family at events and church services.

He did not attend the Royal Family's Christmas Day service at Sandringham this year.

It doesn't matter your status, old farts can't drive!

He wasn't taken to the hospital.

Anyone else seeing an announcement happening in the morning?...
