A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

POLICE have launched an urgent appeal after a teenage girl was raped in a rural village.

The victim, believed to be in her late teens, was attacked in the Rooksbridge area of North Somerset at around 1am on March 16.

She managed to flee the scene before being helped by a member of the public, who officers say they have since spoken to.

A 25-year-old man arrested on suspicion of rape has been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.

Avon and Somerset Police are now urging anyone who may have seen a woman walking alone in rural areas earlier that morning to come forward.

Cops want to speak to drivers who were in the Rooksbridge, Loxton, Sevier Road and Axbridge areas between 6am and 7.45am who may have dashcam footage or information that could assist the investigation.

Neighbourhoods’ Inspector Charmaine Dyne said: “A thorough investigation is underway, and we remain in contact with the victim who has been offered access to specialist support services.

“We would also particularly like to speak to a woman, who was described as wearing a lanyard and being in the company of a small child, who was approached by another woman who asked for directions to Bridgwater.

“We want to remind people that any violence towards women and girls will not be tolerated, and any victim of a sexual offence will be heard, believed, and supported.”

The Welsh valleys have been hit hardest, with Blaenau Gwent officially named the unemployment capital of the UK.

To find these hotspots, we analysed the latest Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) data on working-age benefit combinations.

This looks at the total number of people aged 16 to 65 claiming either Universal Credit with no work requirement and/or Jobseeker’s Allowance.

In Blaenau Gwent, over 38% of working-age population is currently claiming support, meaning nearly two in every five residents aged 18 to 65 are on the books.

New figures show that, of the council’s 41,235 working-age residents, 15,772 are claiming benefits – including 6,773 on Universal Credit who are not required to seek work.

Close behind is the seaside resort of Blackpool, with a claim rate of 36.4%.

DWP figures show that 31,728 people in the area are claiming benefits – which in this area (87,137 people).

Some 14,891 people were claiming Universal Credit with no requirement to seek work, while a further 130 were receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance.

Merthyr Tydfil ranks third on the list, with 36.2% claim rate.

In total, 12,873 residents receive monthly DWP payments, out of a working-age population of 35,602.

At the other end of the scale, the affluent areas of the South and the Scottish suburbs are seeing the lowest levels of dependency in the country.

East Renfrewshire in Scotland boasts the lowest proportion of claimants at just 6.1%, followed closely by East Dunbartonshire at 6.2%.

In England, the Surrey borough of Wokingham leads the way for jobs with only 7.3% of its 112,071 working-age residents claiming unemployment benefits.

While the City of London records an ultra-low 3.3% claim rate, typical commuter hubs like Hart in Hampshire and Windsor and Maidenhead also see claim rates well below 9%.

The surge in claims comes as welfare spending is set to rise by £18billion to a massive £333billion this year, according to documents published alongside the Spring Statement earlier this month.

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has warned that the bill will then climb by roughly £15billion every year on average, reaching a total of £407billion by 2030-31.

According to the OBR, this spiralling cost is mainly because more is being spent on benefits for pensioners and people with long-term health conditions.

These additional costs are expected to grow by about 0.4% of the entire country’s GDP over the next five years.

The rise in spending coincides with a 6.7% hike in Universal Credit payments this April, worth roughly £466 a year for a typical couple.

Other benefits, including PIP, will also rise by 3.8% in line with last September’s inflation figure.

It comes as the number of “NEETs” – those not in education, employment, or training – has hit 957,000, up 36,000 since Labour came to power.

Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride said: “The welfare bill is spiralling out of control.

“Health and disability spending alone is heading for £100billion by 2030 – yet Labour would rather dodge the hard choices than fix the system.

“Britain can’t afford more benefits. We need to fund our defence, cut taxes, and reward work – not pour ever more money into welfare.”

Reform UK’s Lee Anderson said: “Of course we should support people who genuinely need help, but taxpayers aren’t mugs.

“When numbers rocket like this the system clearly being abused.

“The government needs to show some backbone and get a grip on this otherwise the country’s heading for bankruptcy.”

Boasting a rich tapestry of history, culture and independent shops, Barnstaple has long been a pillar of North Devon’s tourism industry, which attracts up to six million visitors each year.

However, like many smaller regional hotspots up and down the UK, it is fighting a grueling battle against drug lords using it as a ‘hub’ to flood the region with illicit substances.

This chilling juxtaposition has become evident over the past year, with police warning residents of Barnstaple and the wider area to look for clues of ‘cuckooing’ – a practice that sees dealers taking over the houses of vulnerable residents and using them as a base for local criminal activity.

Meanwhile, just last week, North Devon Hospital treated two people who were admitted having taken an unknown illegal substance.

Student Orlando Samuels, 18, said: “It’s not so much the drugs that worry me, I’m more concerned with the human trafficking element that county lines are part of and the way they exploit vulnerable people.

“There needs to be more education for young people about the risks of becoming involved.”

Fellow student Mia Powell said: “It is scary to know county lines operate locally, especially when, like me, you have a younger sibling.

“I think a lot more should be done in school about teaching the dangers, online safety in schools doesn’t teach enough about the dangers of being groomed online by these types of criminals.

“So many kids fall into crime these days. In Ilfracombe where I live it’s a small gang of teenagers who cause most of the trouble.

“Sadly, with county lines operating in this area, it’s usually the children who are from more troubled backgrounds who seem more susceptible to getting involved in crime.”

County lines gangs, so-called after the phone lines they use to ship drugs across county borders, target children usually between 14-17 to peddle drugs for them.

But, as The Sun revealed last week, they can be as young as nine-years-old.

They are often targeted because they come from deprived backgrounds, or have difficult family circumstances.

Sometimes the minors become victims of human trafficking and are forced to travel and move far away from home and kept in ‘trap houses’ – where drugs are dealt.

Other are forced to stay in homes of vulnerable people that have been taken over by drug barons or dealers as a base to deal or store drugs, paraphernalia or weapons.

That latter form of exploitation is known as ‘cuckooing’ – the name derived from how cuckoos push other birds out of their nests to claim it for themselves.

Devon and Cornwall Police are well aware of the toll county lines gangs from places including Liverpool and Manchester are having on Barnstaple and the wider North Devon area.

Most recently a six-strong gang of county lines dealers were this year sentenced for their crimes.

Gang leader Stephen Reid was one of two organisers of a cross-country drug network that saw Barnstaple flooded with £4million-worth of Class A drug cocaine, which was then passed to street dealers.

In an investigation called Operation Haku, cops estimated the group, headed by Liverpool-based Reid, 52, and accomplice Christopher Harper, 46, from Yorkshire, moved around £4million of the drug to the south-west across 17 trips between July and December 2024.

They have all now been jailed after pleading guilty to a string of drugs offences.

So foreign drug gangs are using kids to sell drugs and getting people addicted to them so they can take over their flats. And the ones they did for dealing were the whitest ones they could find.

There's also a story about a 16 year old being stabbed by 4 teenagers over "a boy". But she looked like an instagram slag and the story had a link to a go fund me. I'm not going to advertise a go fund me, and I don't approve of 16 year olds I'd mistake for 25 because they're tarted up and plastic looking. The youths weren't named, so I assume they weren't white since they killed her over this shite.

TBH I feel this way about all immigration now, every type - bougie version, digital nomad version, fleeing from the Taliban version - and in every direction. It's all wrong, it's all detrimental to all parties. People should stay in the country where they were born. Nowhere is perfect, but running away is never a perfect solution. Immigrants are always pariahs to some extent, and they almost always have a negative impact on their adopted society.
