A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Have you checked your fire alarm recently?

The worst ones are magpies. CAW CAW like crows, but there's hundreds of the buggers and they kill baby songbirds for fun.
Is Ed milliband the one who just so happens to have a lot of land to be used for green energy which is why he's so on board with this crap because he stands to make a lot of money out of it?
I think he might actually not, at least not directly. He's a genuine fanatic about renewables. There was Cameron, previous architect of so much of our greenwash nightmare, whose father in law was raking in a fortune from renewables subsidies, along with various other tory front benchers and major proponents of environmentalism, and a bunch of Labourists also stand to benefit either directly or indirectly from the huge amounts of cash being thrown around, but Milliband seems to be the very worse thing you can have as a politician: a true believer.

And yet even he was objecting to the green energy solutions when they affected him personally. Or, at least, his wife was, when a block of flats behind their home was going to be built with air-to-water heat pumps fitted. They objected to the potential noise ruining their nice posh millionaire-row apartment.

Am I? News to me. Only thing I support is Accrington stanley.

Accrington stanley? Who are they?!?

No, really. Go fuck yourself with the remains of Keir’s rent boys.
You seem very angry for some reason. I want the government to focus on dealing with real issues, not spending millions on lawyers because some batty old woman can't deal with the past. It's a problem solve by Starmer talking for 30 seconds at PMQ and done. But instead we're pissing money away on campaigns, TV interviews and bureaucratic bullshit.

I have a theory that he's purposely ruining the country to punish us for never letting him be PM
If it means anything Ed, I would never have voted for you but if I had to pick the most attractive senior male politician from recent history then I would say that you are probably the least unattractive from about the 10 or so I can remember. That's about the highest praise I can give you, admittedly much higher than most politicians. I hope this message finds you through whatever ofcom mi5 people watch this place and you get this framed on your wall.

Campaign Against Antisemitism says views shared in group forum are ‘straight out of Nazi Germany’
I hate how just like our Churches and jobs and all that other shit the muslims have perverted our traditional values in a way that on the surface looks the same but is ideologically completely retarded. You don't hate jews for any real reason. You are not a real antisemite. You are just a mindless follower of what some paedophile said 1000 years ago. You don't have a reason to hate jews you just did it because your seniors told you to and you obeyed them like a fucking mindless retard. There's countless reasons to hate israle and shit but nah they just idk mohammed told me to. They have fucking culturally appropriated antisemitism.

Oh I guess it is in towns… it’s never been an issue in non urban places I’ve stayed but yeah…
Gulls are increasingly moving inland, because why fight a shark for a herring when you can just hang out by a kebab shop in a town with no money for bin men and street cleaning?

The government needs to apologise to women
Me and my mate used to humorously refer to the UK as United Findom or United Femdom because of all the unhinged gynocentric policies the lawmakers have been implementing and the overwhelming frequency of false rape accusations. In fact, another one happened quite recently: Cancer-stricken pensioner, 71, with Parkinson's disease spent three months in prison after his carer falsely accused him of making threats to rape and kill her.

Things aren't exactly hunky-dory for men in the US, but they're not bad as they are in the UK. So, you guys have my sincere sympathies

ITV news story just now. "The government needs to apologise to women for single teenage mothers having to give up their new borns for adoption in the past".
I have a friend in her 80s who told me when she was in the maternity ward after the birth of her first child, all the women were woken up one night by someone screaming and crying. The hospital staff had taken the newborn baby of one mother in the middle of the night. They didn't tell her beforehand and there was no one there except the other mothers to attempt to comfort her.
The memory was still extremely distressing to my friend. The time shortly after birth is a particularly vulnerable time for women, the actions of that hospital impacted more women than just the single mother. How could they enjoy that time with their babies while the traumatised and grieving mother is still crying in the corner? A government apology doesn't fix the past, but there should be an acknowledgement of the cruelty and its impact.

You may hate women; I hate the father of that baby for abandoning the mother instead of marrying her.

No 10 refuses to say if key Mandelson texts were lost in phone theft (archive)

McSweeney has conveniently lost a phone that contained evidence against Mandelson.
Latest on this:
Article 1
Article 2

  • No 10 didn't report the phone theft to the security services
  • The "theft" happened after it was decided to investigate McSweeney's phone
  • McSweeney gave the wrong address when reporting the theft
  • The government didn't inform the MET that the phone was owned by a government minister and contained sensitive information, which would have prioritised its retrieval
  • The government remote wiped the phone immediately

Insurance job. The current owner, one Atique Choudhury, is making sure everyone knows how sad he is about the fire after his plans to turn it into flats weren't approved fast enough.

I can have empathy for a woman losing her child like that and still think this is retarded. It's been 40-60 years now. That baby has grown up and had a full life. You have to deal with your past trauma, accept it and move on at some point. You don't need a government apology from someone who wasn't involved and the people are are long dead or brain rotted into zombies. It's like if Otterly kneed you in the balls and then Clive said sorry, Clive didn't do anything, he has nothing to say sorry for. Time and effort is going into women who need to be told to get over it and move on with life. We all have shit in the past that's been difficult, we don't spend our lives chasing false apologies for it.

I don't like men who get women pregnant and ditch them either. I support a family who look after their children. But he's not the one on the news and making demands from a twat.
