A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Last time I was in my home town I was wearing jeans, boots, and a long jacket. I’m middle aged and I’m hardly some glamorous siren. I was by our train station at night coming back from meeting a friend down south and I got leered at by a bunch of Arab looking men who started getting a bit close. There was a security guard (massive dude) who deliberately came and stood next to me and they kind of slunk away.
It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing. You’re prey.
A few days later I went to see another friend in the morning (also wrapped up well because cold) and some random guy was determined to sit next to me in the station waiting room and put his hand on my leg. It’s like everyone’s lost any semblance of control

Jesus. That's horrible. Sorry to read that.
There's some absolute scum out there.

Where did you read this!? timecube.net??

My grandfather was alleged to have an ability to walk up walls. I don't know how true that is.
But I do remember pulling his tail and it detaching. Some kind of escape/distraction thing. It grew back.

Leave Queen Victoria on the notes. It's better then her spacker son and his used up hag of a wife.
What have you got against King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra? Sure, he was a fat, gouty, lecherous whoremonger and she was Danish, but we all have our flaws.

Well, nothing too bad happened, the security guy was the size of a house and clearly aware of what was going on, and I just got up and left the waiting room and handsy man didn’t follow me, and then I had a very nice day with my friend, but yeah, really not great.
I was definitely a bit on edge, the guy in the waiting room sat next to me despite an entire room of free seating and then decided my knee was where his hand should be. As soon as he sat down next to me when there was a whole room of free seats I thought ‘get up and leave’ and in that time he’d pawed my knee. I guess lucky he didn’t do more. And he was lucky i wasn’t with my friend, who would have put his head through a wall.

A friend lives somewhere where there are migrant hotels. She has been followed several times by the cretins, to the point that she is now carrying a small can of Deep Heat in her pocket to blast in the eyes of any that get too close.
I think I'd probably start carrying a flick knife if it was me.

That is so worrying. Mini travel sized spray deodorant is what I was told. Plausible deniability if you use it ‘just reached in my bag officer and there it was.’
Deport the lot of them.

No deep heat is where it's at. It's awful if you get it in your eyes,,trying to rub it out makes it worse. It's the closest thing you can get to pepper spray.
I know. But - It could also be construed as you carrying an offensive weapon if someone decided to make an example of you.

It has legitimate uses. And the old adage of "better tried by twelve than carried by six" can apply here, even if the particulars are different. There's a chain of risks here - first you'd have to need it, then you'd have to successfully use it, then your assailant would have to actually counter-sue rather than have just run off, then a court would have to find in the assailant's favour ruling that you had carried with intent, then the final sentence would have to be worse than whatever the assailant would have done to you in the first place.

Multiply all the probabilities together and honestly, I'd sooner do whatever maximises my chances of safety.

That said, any woman who is assaulted their first response in nearly all circumstances should be to scream bloody murder and try to get away. Still, a spray weapon gives better odds than none at all. And I think the biggest factor in such situations is usually a woman not trusting her instincts. Too many women wouldn't get the pepper spray / Deep Heat in their hand in their pocket until it was too late because they "didn't want to be prejudiced" or something like that. Hopefully most wouldn't but I've known some that would be exactly like that.

TL;DR: Might as well carry the most effective tools you can get away with. Smith and Wesson made more women equal than Andrea Dworkin ever did.

It's definitely dual use, especially at my age. I'd probably end up carrying an empty one. :(

Are you guys ready to see yourself in the annual People of Hate report? Everyone in this thread is a certified terrorist. Reading the Social Cohesion proposal was just insanity.
Uploading this one for posterity. Can't believe they're still going after my guy David Icke.

A peaceful stabbing has occurred at a school near Norwich. Parents complaining that the school had not even notified them & their children were forbidden to contact them, although that could be part of the phones off instruction given to not alert the stabber to their location. 16yo male eventually found & now in custody & 14/15 yo female victim in hospital with 'minor' stab wounds.

When it was first reported by the media, with very few details, I thought it could have been someone stabbed in the arse with a pair of compasses. Happened frequently when I was at school in the 1970's.

But no, the perpetrator more likely to carry a knife in school now than a pair of compasses now.
