A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Also known as just a normal 18 year old. I'd be worried if you weren't idealistic and optimistic.

Aye true. Though I was glad at time my grandad was dead, he would have been furious I was in a union. Though he would have approved of the snooker for sure.

Unfortunately there are a lot of shit employers out there and those bastards need held to account. I had one a couple of years back.a colleague of mine was sick in hospital. He had a burst stomach ulcer and appendix at same time, and was sacked on the day he was discharged from hospital. Poor fucker had been gravely sick and getting SSP, and was given boot from the job. That shit is unconscionable to me. He was a good bloke and a great colleague and didn't deserve that.

@HairyBadger : I'm really sorry that was the case for you. In my experience shop stewards are like managers in a big company: a good one will make all difference, a bad one will ruin your life.

I knew someone who got sacked because of NHS waiting lists and they were waiting for a cancer treatment that they couldn’t function without. They worked for the NHS.

The real rot in UK society is not just to be thrown at the Politicians, most of whom I believe should end up in shallow graves, but in the Civil Service.

I am told that it is near impossible for a Minister to dismiss or sack or fire the head or senior staff of the department they are heading.

I would like to know the technicalities, but to me, for any Political party this seems wrong.
This is where I suggest that you check out Cummings Substack. He may be a cock, but he knows the bloat in government and hasn't been shy about exposing it.

Greens are now second lace on 19% in Gorton & Denton, according to Stats For Lefties who have Reform UK on 29% (on most polls we're at 30% not going to argue over one percent), but there's some interesting questions being asked of David Paulden aka Zack Polanski and the real reason for his name change many years ago.

Ron Jones is the real name for Rhun Ap Iorwerth as well.

I don't understand why people can't grasp that "Greens" are just communists.

Curly, Straight, curly, straight hehehe YAWWWW ohhh

I hope it stays illegal just because weed smokers are the most fucking obnoxious cunts in the country and deserve to suffer.
I don't get this line of thinking. They already do it and it's already illegal. Make it legal, make it expensive. May as well get that Money for Nothing rather than the country facing Dire Straits.

Immigrant works a day in the van picking up scrap, gets a pay stub.
Poles picked up shit and cleaned the country. Browns throw shit into the country side. They are not the same.
The poles didn't "leave". We left the EU and they were no longer allowed to be here without passing proper immigration vetting.
I'm starting to think you've never met any non-white, non-british people in your life and you haven't travelled, anywhere, ever.
The slavs went home because 1) their economies improved by joining the EU trading bloc, and 2) the quality of life decrease they took coming to England for wage increase, was no longer worth it.

I worked with varying flavours of slav who were sick of living in towns/cities and getting a good wage that was taxed off of them. They were, and are, much better off poor in slavland than semi-well off in England.

And here's the man with all the muslim friends telling us how great the slavs are now.

Only racist in the thread was supposed to be ironic. But sadly it is not.

They went home because there was no longer free movement between the UK and Europe. You needed to apply for an actual visa.

Because green isn't red? You might need an eye doctor. Though now you say that if you mix green and red you do get that hemorrhoid diarrhea type shit colour which does accurately describe most of their members.

Then where do you stop? Should the government be selling legal heroin to anyone who wants some? If you make it legal more people will do it and the people who do do it are cunts. Therefore not making it legal means there are less cunts than otherwise.

Maybe, maybe not. Legalizing hard drugs paid off in Portugal, but made Portland worse than it was before.

Yea, I know plenty of Poles, Czech, Slovaks and Romanians who returned back to their country because things got better there, salaries improved, access to buying a property improved, and there's no muds. After Brexit, they had right to stay (as I do in my EU country), but many chose not to.
The issue for me is that Art 50 residence, doesn't give me the right to live and work in any EU country other than the one I live, so there goes my plans of buying a vila in Spain to retire in.

No, they didn't.
The last slavwave was early 2000, giving them plenty of time to get dual citizenship. They went home because this country is worse than the one they came from.

You stop at weed. It's so common place and every one smokes it, just legalise it and you'll drag users of harder drugs back onto weed.
I don't know what it's like nowadays but a few years back coke was absolutely rife.
The main reasons were price and privacy. Coke got super cheap and can be snorted in the bogs at Revolution. Smoking a joint alerts everyone within a 100m radius.

I don't fully understand this? Is Art 50 the same as a visa D?
I can work, own property and open a bank account in any EU country.

If you were in the EU during Brexit, you could apply for residence under Art 50 of the Withdrawal agreement which gave you the same rights as an EU citizen in the country in which you were present. It doesn't give me the right to live and work in another country. Believe me, I know as I lost a job offer thanks to this...the British Embassy were involved too. Art 50 gives less rights than someone post-Brexit who moved to the EU and got a visa.

Ah right I understand. You're a brit, moved abroad, brexit happened and your EU rights went out of the window?

As time goes by, I can't help but wonder if Brexit was about keeping us in, and not keeping other people out.
