A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The thing with the 2000s influx of Poles is, and I've had this confirmed by actual Polish people in Poland, they weren't sending their best.

The sort of people moving here to live 8 to a house and work in a factory were exactly the sort of people who would be willing to do that to scratch a few extra quid together and to hell with quality of life or dignity. We got the polski equivalent of chavs with a work ethic.

* Axe the Health Boards and Admins - Admin can be done externally.

* Strike a deal with UNISON that new staff will be paid a fair and respectable wage. If asked to do overtime, make it double time and do not expect staff to work more than so many hours per week as they need to rest as well - always have cover available.

Bring back the NHS bursaries for allied health care profession students. You know, podiatrists, audiologists, etc. Or preferably, scrap those needing a degree to qualify in and make them vocational with some classroom based learning.

Same for nursing. The degree aspect of it actively puts people who are, in terms of personality, well suited to it off.

But absolutely I agree on banning foreign staff. The NHS is addicted to cheap third world labour because a cheap third world workforce expects, and is happy with cheap third world pay and conditions.

Another of the biggest reasons is that people would assume you had the exact same politics as everyone else and would be fucking horrible to you if you didn't fit with their idea of what a faggot's politics should be. The easiest way to explain it is Rowling, she used to be the figurehead of these sorts of people, they loved that Dumbledor was gay and all that shit. Then when she expressed a single dissenting opinion they dogpiled her nonstop. Imagine that but you are not a billionaire with countless supporters. There would genuinely be people who would go around saying of xyz is a transphobe don't date them, you know like a teenage girl would. For the longest time if you didn't fit the default of heavy left leaning then you were seen kinda as an impostor, not a real ____ because real ____s love trans rights and you must support the complete extermination of the lgbtqhigraef like those other people because you agree with one single point of theirs. It was very much an extreme echochamber. You weren't allowed to question any lgbtqriga topic because if you even slightly doubted it then you were the same as the people who would kill you for being an lgbtqhbirah. They would never say who those people are but we sure know that it's not white people. It got better when these sorts of groups became a thing because you had a group that would support you. It wasn't just you vs the entire community, it was you + a load of other people like you vs the rest of the community. And helped a lot of people question things because there was very little internal questioning before. Obviously being called complicit in (or even enjoying) the mutilation of children wasn't good a massive reason for these groups existing is because of just how fucking obnoxious the entire community was within itself. The trans community is as responsible if not more responsible for these groups forming than any outside force was.

The Polish also fucking left. They didn't stick around sucking blood from a corpse. A lot of them came and did the shitty factory jobs that while it obviously had an imact on English people's job prospects especially younger people they at least did actual work and contributed to society. And when that was done they fucked off. I don't want the country overrun with Poles either but after working with both I'll take a Pole over a paki any day. At least showering is a common thing in Poland.

The old Polish scam used to work like this.

Polish scrap yard owner hires Polish immigrant to work for him.
Immigrant works a day in the van picking up scrap, gets a pay stub.
Immigrant uses pay stub to apply for benefits.
Immigrant hands some cash to scrap yard owner and sends the rest home.
Works under the table / criminality while claiming bennies.

If they had kids any where they also claimed child benefit.

There was guides written to help educate immigrants on how to exploit the benefits system

A woman jailed for abusing 21 babies is due for deportation on Thursday but the victims' parents fear she could go on to "harm many more children", MPs have heard.
Roksana Lecka is due to be deported to Poland later this week, it is understood.
Once she arrives, her treatment is a matter for Polish authorities.
Lecka, now aged 23, was jailed for eight years last September after admitting seven counts of cruelty to a person under the age of 16, and was convicted after a trial of another 14 counts.
Munira Wilson told the Commons "clear communication and transparency is key" in child abuse cases.

"Yet the parents of the 21 babies abused by Roksana Lecka at Twickenham Green Nursery were given less than a week's notice that she would be deported to Poland this Thursday," the Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham said.
"They have been given no information about whether Lecka will continue to serve the rest of her eight-year sentence or whether she will walk free after just four months in a UK prison.
"They fear, if left unsupervised, she will harm many more children.


"So, can the minister tell the House what the release terms are for Lecka, because those parents deserve answers."
Responding, victims minister Alex Davies-Jones said she wanted to send "thoughts and sympathies to all of the victims of these most heinous crimes".

She said: "Child abuse is one of the most heinous crimes and it is right that we have the correct support services available for child victims.
"The sentencing minister (Jake Richards) is meeting with colleagues in the Home Office today to discuss the needs of this case, and I will ensure that she gets the full update as requested on the specifics."
British police are thought to be making efforts to contact Polish authorities, to make them aware of Lecka's offending history.
A Home Office spokesperson declined to comment on the case, but said: "We will not allow foreign criminals and illegal migrants to exploit our laws.
"We are reforming human rights laws and replacing the broken appeals system so we can scale up deportations.

"All foreign national offenders who receive a prison sentence in the UK are referred for deportation at the earliest opportunity."
Lecka's crimes were discovered in June 2024 after she was sent home for pinching a number of children at Riverside Nursery in Twickenham, which has since closed.

Lecka, from Hounslow, London, worked at the nursery school between January and June 2024.
At her sentencing last year, Judge Sarah Plaschkes KC at Kingston Crown Court said Lecka "pinched, slapped, punched, smacked and kicked" children, and "pulled their ears, hair and their toes", also toppling them "headfirst into cots".

Unison are batshit and I say that as a former shop steward for CWU (albeit a very very long time ago now). Personally I did that because posties got fucked over and the social life was great. Subsidized pints for a quid and a good snooker league? Health care cash plan? Yes please. Ditto legal representation when I was off for 12 weeks with a broken wrist because some arsehole chucked some strapex on floor instead of in the designated bin and my gaffer sent me out delivering mail anyway.

There is absolutely a place for unions but it is at a local level dealing with problems in the workplace, not fucking about in national policy. Employers do fuck about and should be held to account when they do but meddling with politics should be outside of their remit.

Communications workers union. I was an idealistic, impressionable gobshite of an 18 year-old.

In my defence I'm not a man and suffered an injury at work. I was told to toughen up by my manger and sent out delivering post (and I was on a bike based route). I couldn't weight bear on my right wrist and was found by someone on my route who was a retired nurse,who took one look at my hand and my cyanosed nails, bundled me into her car and took me to hospital. I had a fractured scaphoid that needed a pin to fix, I was off for 3 months with my wrist in a pot and had a manager who tried to deny everything.

He absolutely failed to adhere to a duty of care and 18 year old me would have had no clue how to handle that, and while I despise the TUC I am grateful to this day for their help.
