A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

He is launching an urgent investigation into scrapping this bureaucratic red tape.

The government has already announced that pubs can stay open late this summer so they can show World Cup games.

Meanwhile, an extra £150million will be pumped into neglected high streets to breathe new life into boarded down shops.

50 year old woman stabbed by 30 year old man in Willesden, London

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 50-year-old woman was stabbed to death in a busy part of north-west London, police have said.

Emergency services were called to Pound Lane in Willesden at about 16:00 GMT on Saturday where they found the injured woman. Paramedics tried to save her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Met said officers arrested a 30-year-old man on the same day and that they believed he was known to the woman. He remains in custody.

Det Ch Insp Rebecca Woodsford, who is leading the police investigation, said there was no information to suggest this was not an isolated incident and that there was no wider risk to the public.
"This incident happened in a busy part of Willesden, and I'd also like to thank the members of the public who provided first aid and called the emergency services," she said.

"Our priority is to establish the circumstances surrounding what happened. However, based on our enquiries so far, there is nothing to suggest any wider risk to the public."

Det Supt Tony Bellis, responsible for local policing in Brent, said: "An incident of this nature is tragic and deeply concerning, and our thoughts remain with the victim's family, friends and all those affected."

Local officers will be on patrol in the area to provide additional reassurance and to speak to any witnesses or anyone with information.

Sorry, but thems the brakes. I'm a pretty open minded guy and even I've just accepted that most women are just kind of ... dumb? Dumb feels like the wrong word. Maybe "Eloi'dified?" works better. There are decent women out there. They do try their best but they're ultimately women and so they will act as women do. The same way men will act the way men do. You either accept this and learn to navigate it or it drives you crazy and you end up in a park loo asking boys if they want to see your puppy. I don't think you're a bad 'un otterly if that means much. There are a few woman I respect, a few who are really exception people who can do amazing things.. but every so often.. they have a woman moment. And it doesn't matter how smart, creative or wise they are.. they're fucking retarded for starting that fight or causing a problem even the dumbest idiot could have seen coming.

One of the worst parts of our cultural decline is we're completely lost touch with our own family dynamics. Young boys are reckless, young women are stupid, dad is stern but loving and mother is the glue that ties the family together and to wider families around you. Even then mothers would get into stupid fights with each other. I remember my aunt "sending my uncle round" to sort my mother out over some stupid woman argument. He turned up, had a cup of tea and a biscuit. Went home and told his wife "yea, I set her right, It's all done with now" and not a single thing was said or done. It was known that women would get into stupid fights with each other. The men would either tell them to pack it in or go "round their house" and say she was being being an idiot as usual. And despite nothing changing, the problem was resolved because there never was a problem to begin with. It was a part of working class culture. We knew women were catty and always trying to get one over on each other for the pettiest reasons possible. And we managed it and hosted church hall bring and buy sales. The rice crispy treats were better back then. Better rice crispies and better chocolate. And they only cost 20p!
