A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

There's one little stopping/passing spot in a country lane near me, whatever the word is, one of those spots to park when there's no other spots for miles. One of the possible symptoms of any schizophrenia type disorder is a flat affect and general apathy or essentially an emotional dulling. Ie something that you would be traumatised by is just a bad day for them. Or something that would make you feel pretty good makes them feel nothing noticeable. Your 10/10 worst day is a 5/10 to them and though their scale is the same as yours it never goes past 5. Considering it's not listed there is pretty ironic because it's one of the most overlooked symptoms and why a large portion of people that are not outwardly psychotic get diagnosed as autistic because it gets misinterpreted as alexithymia.

That's what I meant at least. We need to find some use for them and we can't stick them in parliament or the c suite like we can psychopaths.

As I think others have pointed out, this isn't a good line up with schizophrenia. But to the actual topic of being mentally able to kill, there was an army study (USA) that looked into a willingness to kill and they found there is a fairly consistent proportion of the population that is "wired" for it, I forget the exact ratio to general population though it wasn't as low as you'd think. BUT, such people fell into two categories. One category was your psycho types. They wanted to kill. The other was fairly normal so far as they could tell, no especial psychotic tendencies, but they were able to kill without the same trauma most feel over it. The study was done because training people to kill is actually quite hard and can also cause a lot of trauma. Many of us will already know about the studies from WWI where casualty rates far lower than expected indicated many of the gunners had aimed above their enemies' heads. It was talking about the techniques for getting people past this.

Of course most of anybody can kill if really pushed to it. It's you or them, there's sustained abuse that slowly drives you to it, you can see them about to attack your spouse with an axe (that may or may not apply for some people). But it is a high bar for most of the population. But not for those two groups. Those people can kill and then get on with their lives. I think in evolutionary terms, this makes sense. You need a general hesitation of violence, but every tribe needs at least a couple of members that can go and beat the rival tribe's heads in with a rock when things get bad.

I should say to be complete that this study was on US army applicants and therefore, so far as I recall, all men (we're going back a long way) so the ratios may be entirely different for women. Honestly, I suspect higher (no offence to our female kiwis).

I forget exactly what it was. But I read something like that most people are willing to be violent but not murderous. That once you have 'defeated' the other person that the drive to be violent drops. Because it was good for the gene pool to not kill each other, but that violence was still sometimes something that had to happen. Back in ye olde days when the monkey hit the other monkey over the head with a rock and then looked down to see it sad and defeated it would instead just move on instead of killing it. Most people can't be violent to someone that they see as defeated or not a threat. Then there's the people that will curb stomp someone that's already knocked out and half the time those are pakis.
