A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

There was an employment agency owned by a fella who would collect slavs from the airport, drive them to the properties he owned and let them stay there for board and food. He then employed them at a well known company, who paid them less than the minimum wage, half of which was garnished by said agent.

I did a bit of digging into the one near Wigan that recently part passed into the Crown's hands. The answer to, "why wasn't something done sooner," is of course, "fucking gypsy scum."

A former scrapyard on Bolton House Road in Bickershaw is now home to hundreds of thousands of binbags containing household waste.
The stench is foul, there are reports of rat infestations and locals don’t want to go outside. And as the weather warms up over the coming weeks, the fears are that the situation will only deteriorate further.

Complaints have been made to Wigan Council, police and the Environment Agency, but aside from badly parked lorries being moved on, there is little sign of any action being taken.

Several householders claim there has been a reluctance by the authorities to intervene because the operation is allegedly being carried out by members of the traveller community and there are extra sensitivities around it as a result.

But it is clear that this is an environmental problem that is impacting on a lot of people and is visible from nearby Bickershaw CE Primary School.
One resident, who did not want to be identified, said: “It’s absolutely horrible here. For about three weeks in January, there were 20 to 30 18-wheel articulated lorries full of waste going to the yard, the scrap having been moved to fields nearby, and it just piled higher and higher.

"Eventually the site was so full that the deliveries became a trickle. We were told this is just a ‘transfer station’ and it would soon be moved to the correct location. But nothing has. In fact they pushed the waste futher to back to pile it even higher to get even more rubbish in.

"The smell is awful. You expect it when you’re at Kirkless tip but not outside your home.”
Another householder said they knew a family with an autistic son who was refusing to live at home because the stench was making him sick and was therefore having to live with relatives.
And a number told Wigan Today that they were taking to taping over air vents to prevent the foul aroma from getting indoors.

One said: “This can’t go on. It is anti-social in the extreme. The police have been down there and confirmed the dump is illegeal but all they’ve done so far is to move on lorries that were obstructing the road.

"Complaints have been lodged with the council and Environment Agency but we’ve seen no action. The site is run by travellers and it looks like they are pussyfooting around, frightened to upset them.

"But this is a major public health issue that needs tackling now.​

"We’ve got rats running around and the smell is awful. Imagine what it’s going to be like when the weather warms up if this lot isn’t shifted.

"We are not talking about fly-tipping: this is an environmental mess on an industrial scale.”​

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: “Our partnership investigation with Greater Manchester Police, Wigan Council and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency into alleged illegal waste dumping activity at the Bolton House Road site is ongoing.

“Members of the public are encouraged to report information about this site to the Environment Agency’s incident hotline on 0800 807060 or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
A council spokesman said: “We are aware of the situation and are liaising with the EA to resolve it.”

A "toxic" waste fire which had been burning for more than a week has forced nearby businesses to close and children to miss several days of school, an MP has said.

The blaze broke out on Bolton House Road in Bickershaw, Wigan, which firefighters have finally put out after 10 days.

Labour MP for Makerfield Josh Simons said the fire, thought to have started with illegally-dumped waste, "never should have happened" and that he had been asking for assistance from the Environment Agency to clear the waste site for months.

The Environment Agency said it was working with emergency services to manage the incident.
"Our priority is to ensure the safety of the public and the environment. We are working closely with emergency services and other partners to manage the incident and minimise any potential environmental impact," a spokesperson said.

In a letter written to Environment Secretary Steve Reed, Simons said children at the nearby Bickershaw C of E Primary had missed "multiple days at school" because of the fire and that United Utilites was dealing with "toxic water run off".

"In this fire, the people I represent are suffering again because their voices have not been heard and their warnings have fallen through the cracks between agencies," Simons wrote.

The school confirmed it had since reopened.

Simons earlier told BBC Radio Manchester the "mountain of toxic waste" had been accumulating on the private land site for about six months.

"[It has] all matter of things poking out of it - washing machines, nappies chemical cans," he said.

He said the site had been reported to police and the Environment Agency, who said it was the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation.

However, Simons said there had been no timeline on when it was to be cleared, and he claimed the Environment Agency told him it was Wigan Council's responsibility.

Simons said: "Wigan Council has had an evaluation of the cost, and it's as much a £4.5m, and...local authorities do not have £5m sitting around to clear up sites.

"So if Wigan Council can't afford it, and the Environment Agency says it's not their job, how are we going to get this waste removed?

"[The fire] will only start again unless we deal with the underlying problem."

Wigan Council said it had declared a major incident on Tuesday because of how long the fire had been burning and the resources it required, but earlier stood down the declaration once it had been put out.

The authority said it was working with the Environment Agency and Greater Manchester Police to address "long-standing issues" regarding the site's use.

Andy Burnham is ‘seeking answers’ over how 25,000 tonnes of waste was dumped in a Wigan village illegally.

The dump, on Bolton House Road in Bickershaw, started building up in January, neighbours said. In July, the ‘toxic waste’ went up in flames, with the days’-long inferno forcing a primary school to close.

Wigan council secured an extension to a closure order at the end of October, so no-one can access the site. A clean-up could cost £4.5m, the Local Democracy Reporting Service understands.

Now Andy Burnham has said he is probing authorities on how the situation was allowed to happen.

“It’s a question you would first have to put to the Environment Agency,” he told BBC Radio Manchester on Thursday (November 6).

“That scale of dumping is to be dealt with at that level. I would ask the same question. The responsibility is beyond my remit.

“It’s an incredible scale of illegal dumping in Bickershaw. We are seeking answers from the Environment Agency. Wigan council has a role here as well.”

Late last month, Makerfield MP Josh Simons said he has ‘been pushing the Environment Agency every time [he] meets with them to move further and faster’.

He added: “I’m very pleased that the first section of the waste should be removed very soon, but I’m frustrated on residents’ behalf that it’s taken this long, and that they’re still suffering the impact of criminal activity. I will not stop fighting to get this sorted, and to stop this from ever happening again.”

The saga has left residents feeling ‘awful’. One said: Lorries started bringing stuff here in January and although we reported it to the council it took months and months before they did anything about it.

“The rubbish just got higher and higher and no-one seemed to want to know.”

Another resident added: “It’s been terrible. We’ve had rats and lots of flies, and no one has given a damn until recently.

“We’ve had big wagons dumping stuff like nappies, black bin rubbish, chemicals and plastic.”

Worth noting as well that waste built up in about a year and nominally for part of that year there was a closure order. Wonder when the next one currently building up will hit the news too?

Fifth man, 19, is arrested over Keir Starmer arson attacks in north London [Archive]

A fifth man has been arrested after two properties and a car linked to Sir Keir Starmer were targeted in north London in alleged arson attacks last year.

Scotland Yard said a 19-year-old male was arrested yesterday in Harlow, Essex, on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson.

He was taken into custody at Essex police station for questioning and has since been released under investigation.

The arrest is in relation to a Met Police investigation into a vehicle blaze last year on May 8, a fire at the entrance of a property on May 11 and a fire at a residential address on May 12 that are connected to the Prime Minister.

A fourth man, 48, who was arrested at Stansted Airport in June last year on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life has been released without charge.

Three men have already been charged in connection with the fires: Ukrainians Petro Pochynok, 35, and Roman Lavrynovych, 21, and 27-year-old Romanian national Stanislav Carpiuc.

Pochynok has been charged with conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life, Lavrynovych with three counts of arson with intent to endanger life, while Carpiuc has been charged with conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life.

They all deny the charges and have been remanded in custody ahead of a trial at the Old Bailey on April 27.
The charges relate to three arson incidents: a vehicle fire in Kentish Town, a fire at the Prime Minister's private home in the same street, and another blaze at an address where he previously lived in the Islington area.

One of the fires took place in the early hours of May 12 at the property where Sir Keir lived before he became Prime Minister and moved into Downing Street.

A car was torched in the same street four days earlier on May 8.

The other fire took place on May 11 at the front door of a house converted into flats in Islington.

Sir Keir has let his £2million private home in the Kentish Town area of north London to his sister-in-law on a peppercorn rent since he moved into 10 Downing Street following his general election victory.

The property was set alight in the early hours of May 12, with the London Fire Brigade alerting police to reports of a fire there at 1.35am.

The blaze damaged the porch of the property but no one was hurt.

Firefighters were able to bring it under control within 20 minutes, stopping it from spreading further indoors.

It came just 24 hours after a flat the Prime Minister previously lived at, in the nearby Islington area, caught fire.

Firefighters attended the blaze, helping one person to safety, with the door of the property suffering fire damage.

On May 8, in the same street as Sir Keir's Kentish Town property, a car he sold to a neighbour last year also burst into flames.

The new owner of the Toyota Rav 4 is understood to have thought the fire started because of a faulty battery.

The hybrid car was completely destroyed in the blaze, which occurred on VE Day.

The Met's Counter Terrorism Command is leading the investigation as all three targets of the alleged arson attacks have 'previous connections with a high-profile public figure'.
