A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Is this just where I live or something? All of the meat in supermarkets here is either normal people food and then a single tiny section dedicated to the mussies in the corner. I have never heard of any non muslim eating halal shit intentionally, other than things that they just slap halal on despite not containing any meat.
pretty much all new zealand lamb sold in supermarkets is halal slaughtered. They sell into muslim countries, so decided that it was cheaper to slaughter everything in the same way rather than have two separate slaughter processes for varying demand. IIRC the only difference is some form of certification process, which they only apply to lamb going to the arabs. We still get the "benefit" of it. A lot of beef and chicken is also halal, but there's no way to know because it all ends up in the same supply chain.

This previously hit the media around 2014, but it was cast then as "this is a racist thing to be angry about" and quickly shuffled out of the way before it could really sink in. The labelling campaigns at the time were treated the same way. No labelling means people don't notice on a daily basis, so it doesn't stick.

Seriously, what the fuck is going on with Reform and Islam?
Zia is one of Farage's buddies from the City. It's created a blind spot that let the entryists waltz right in and take over.

The Telegraph have reported Reform's 'expected' cabinet picks and whew lads. Farage denies anything's decided but I think these are real picks being floated. If true, it means 2/3 of the top cabinet heads are Muslims. I also suspect it means they're not too confident about attracting any more big names if the plum roles are publicly spoken for. Archive

Starmer has ordered Labour to ramp up attacks on Greens. Don't know why Labour need to campaign as I thought they were so popular we didn't need to have elections?
Keir Starmer has ordered his team to increase attacks on the Greens for antisemitism and their "extreme policies" to give up nuclear weapons and leave NATO
Starmer believes the public are unaware of many of the party's policies amid rising popularity
Government source: "The honeymoon is over for Zack Polanski’s party. Beyond the social media soundbites there are some scary policies that need to be exposed"
about having been sexually assaulted by two boat monkeys while walking home from work
Gone from never being catcalled/harassed in broad daylight to having arabs/browns approach me in the street and call me a slut multiple times in recent weeks. A pair of older ladies stepped in once and a young white guy walked me down the road to make sure he wasn't following but Christ!!! They also try to sit by you on the bus if you're not careful. disgusting pigs.

Reform are slowly just turning into the tories with a different name at this point, sorry for anyone who actually thought things were going to be any different.

I've said before, Farage is not a viable leader, is completely untrustworthy, and doesn't have the balls or brains to be PM. He's like Boris; he wants the trappings, but not the responsibility, so he (likely unconsciously) self-sabotages. As far as I was concerned, Reform's only real purpose was pushing the immigration debate in the right direction and any vote I made for them would be a reluctant one at best. Fortunately, the sheer volume of support for even Farage's milquetoast anti-immigration stance has forced the door open. Remigration is no longer a fringe position, to the point that even some Labourists are openly discussing it as not merely an option, but a near-certainty within the next few years. Labour have been caught flat-footed by this. They know Reform splitting the vote is the only reason they won the election, so they're trying to at least look like they're running to the right on immigration even as they try to hold on to the hard left wing of the party.

What would be ideal would be if Reform, having pushed this far, soaks up the wets and the disaster capitalists, leaving a Tory rump that moves centre and right and campaigns on slashing away Blairite structures and expelling arabs, muslims, indians, and other such rubbish. Unfortunately, what I suspect will actually happen is that the Tory rump ends up consisting entirely of useless arses and continues to be full of shit.

I also want Cleverly as PM. Nobody who collects sisters of battle can be all bad.

Sargon actually says this best because it perfectly summarizes Farage. "He always rides behind the crest but never on it." Farage is so afraid of political damage and management that he has let Reform be co-opted by Muslims. The problem is he has Jenrick, who is the saviour of the party but also its destroyer. Lowe should have had leadership years ago.

I think when Lowe announces his political party, a lot will jump ship because they want a clear alternative. Reform is not a clear alternative. Jenrick, in all my scanning of his interviews etc seems remorseful of his actions. It's why my opinion on him has softened a bit. I would not be surprised whatsoever if he bumped into the same issues Lowe did. It's why I can see them eventually collaborating. I would honestly accept Reform if it were Jenrick leading, he ousts the Boris sycophants, and Zia, but then have Braverman, Truss, and Lowe in. I think if Nigel and Zia were out, Lowe would go back to Reform because those were his key issues.

I still think Farage is a plant.

problem with Jenrick is that he is of the Hebrew variety so he can't be trusted fully.

I don't think he's a plant pe say but I think he's just allowed to exist (and not soundly mocked for Up The Ra cameos etc etc) because he's a manic BPD bitch who always blows up his movement and is desperate for approval from anybody. Sort of like how Catboy Nick was originally 'authentic' but then became a fed and allowed to continue doing what he does.

Interesting, I wasn't aware Tories could express remorse (jk). Do you see a Reform coup on the cards at all, especially if the plan was to bring Lowe back to Reform rather than Lowe starting up a whole new party? And why Suella Braverman but not Zia, is it because shes Hindu/Tamil and not Muslim?

The issue with Reform currently is that they are split in ideologies. Jenrick is the right, and Zia is technocratic. These two cannot exist as they don't work well. A bust-up will happen, and Farage cannot afford to lose Jenrick because the people of the right will leave with him.

Personally, I think Jenrick wants Reform and wants Zia out, then he can direct Farage more overtly. The interesting moment will be when Braverman joins. She and Jenrick are very outspoken, like Lowe, and will diminish Zia immensely. Braverman is based, like really based, she is basically a Hindu Ruper Lowe. She is very self-aware of her position and never does the "I am telling you how to run your country" meme.

Ultimately, if Jenrick was running Reform, Starmer would be petrified. He knows a party of Lowe, Jenrick, and Braverman is a force, but a snapshot of where the overturn window is. It has none of the Torie baggage, as Dorris and Nadhir will flee.

I have stated that I think the Labour defector is Wes Streeting. I believe that even more now because he has not mentioned Burnham, even though he did last month. This means he is on maneuvers because he has a different goal. He would actually be a good Shadow Health Minister. He also, of course have a shit ton of dirt on Starmer, and for some reason, Starmer is petrified of him. He does not really get along with his cabinet either, as Mahmood wants to be PM. We know from Farage it's a "big name."

The supply chain in this country is seriously fucked. There's way too much reliance on just in time logistics, because it saves a few pennies for supermarkets. There's no food reserves, last I read we have about 8-10 days worth of food in the country. And that's at normal buying levels, it doesn't account for panic buying and a run on stuff.

I honestly don't want to know what's going on with fruit and veg but I clocked this as far back as 2010. Spuds, you used to buy a big bag and stick ones you don't use in a pillow case, and they'd last ages. Now they go off in a week.

Some of the stuff I deal with at work makes me aware that it only takes one thing breaking to fuck deliveries up, and no delivery has a knock on effect because there's no back up plan. I've amassed a pretty good food store since I started my job because it honestly worries me how fragile it all is.

One big logistics chain which deal with lots of stuff,no just food, has got significant signs of financial issues partly caused by internal politics and change right now and if they tank things will get messy.
I've said this before, but if you have any spare room in your house or garage grab one of those cheap shelving units you can get from Screwfix or B&Q with a metal frame and use it to store a month's worth of tins and dry food SEPERATE from your regular shopping. It's completely revolutionised how I shop because if things are running low there's always something I can grab from the 'storeroom' and replace it in the next shop.

You never know when you're going to need an emergency supply of food, but having it there is better than not having it. You can't realistically believe that we're one Bomalian stabbing away from riots and also not prepare yourself to hunker down. Plus an overly autistic amount of overpreperation already paid for itself when I was riddled with flu and couldn't even stomach the thought of putting away a Tesco delivery from the front door, but there was a massive selection of easy tinned meals that would take 3 minutes to make.

Granted, don't become a hoarder, but having a seperate 'just in case of emergency' shelf is the best thing that current you can do to benefit future you.

@Tom Nook's Gloryhole This 1000%, I did this on the recommendation of Metokour when he was doing the Covid streams in November 2019. I could see something bad happening, so I bought beans and pasta, and froze some bread for toast, and got like 100 rolls of toilet paper in January for about £25.

Ever since then, when I go shopping every few weeks, I buy a few cans of soup, etc. I find it good towards the end of the month too, because if money is low, I can dip into the storage. Since Uni, my friend was a staunch batch cooker, and it really changed how I cook.

Beans and pasta are one thing, but the real benefit is variety. Most tinned goods are fine until 2029 or even later, I've picked up cans that are fine until after 2030 which is ridiculous.

So in addition to dried pasta and beans there's soup, mackerel, sardines, tuna, canned chicken in white sauce (yes I know, but it takes 2 minutes to heat up in the microwave and tea is sorted), chili con carne, microwave rice (veetee sticky rice straight up works with anything and gets the quality of rice cooker rice in 2 mins), canned vegetables and fruit, spaghetti hoops if they're your thing, and frey bentos pies will straight up outlast every single one of us if stored right. Honestly just go to the tinned food section of Asda or Tesco or Morrisons and grab a few things you like from each section and for £100 or less you've got a safety net.

You're not going to be living like a king, but in extreme circumstances you've got something sorted and absolute worst case scenario if you somehow don't eat that can of chili con carne in 2 years time you're down about 2 quid by chucking it out.

Just a quick point of fact - Suella Braverman is Buddhist, not Hindu. Her husband Rael is Jewish and already a member of Reform.

Not news as such but this moving portrait of Ed Milliband made from a recent interview is currently getting some mileage on X as an 'if only you knew how bad things really are' react. He looks like a large primate showing flickers of near-human cognizance.
