A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

I know many here want none at all, but there's truth to what Trump said about "they're not sending their best". Many of these countries offload their criminals, subversives and radicals to Europe because Europe will take them. The average UAE citizen just wants a comfortable safe life same as most people. I'm certain a lot of the normal people in these countries think we're insane for giving these people homes and money here.

I always get confused when people talk about the tunnel to Drangleic castle in dark souls 2 and how the change in weather is immersion breaking. The thing to consider is what is determined as 'Left' and what is 'Right'.

I am from a pit estate which was solidly Labour in support, but now a lot of people who (like me) were born into socialist values and looked out for each other are now no longer welcome in Labour as we don't fit what 'the Left' now is. Instead, we are now on 'the Right' as Reform UK is the only party which appeals to our based and rooted values.

Also, Politicians really don't give a damn deep down if you have 'Far Right' views, that's just more money to be spent on policing hurty words and ruining the lives of people who don't want their children to get raped by migrants or have their penises or vaginas removed because the trannies demand it. Prevent is just window dressing to convince Tarquin and Tabitha from Poshington-upon-Thames that the working class scruffs are on notice and will be punished for wrongthink.

I don't have a real answer but I would guess it's just that they were born into a left leaning society and fed left leaning propaganda and have never thought about it. They're less people who chose to vote labour and more people who just defaulted to it and never thought about the rest. I mean that was kinda me when I was younger and even then everyone laughed at the greens and just considered them a protest vote. Trying to dissect the politics of a redditor is pointless, you'd have better luck trying to explain the politics of my dog. A quite frankly concerning number of redditors do not have opinions or thoughts, they don't have values or beliefs, instead they memorise r/all post titles and repeat those. Starmer being hell bent on banning X is a sure-fire move to accelerate rich people to leave. Corpos won't have any trust and view the environment as hostile for investment (it is). I was watching one of the Lotus Eaters videos about the Starmerbunker, and I was actually surprised that Reform has taken a lot of the outlying limits of the city. Muslims are only 30% of London, which I was surprised by. I thought it was 50%. If Labour loses London, they are through forever, as Dems and Greens have captured the counties outside London.
