A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Case in point is the current trial of the Palestine Action guy who allegedly swung a sledgehammer (possibly twice) at a female police officers back, resulting in serious injuries, after having broken into I think it was some kind of defence firm factory. I say allegedly, as the trial is ongoing, but there has been police bodycam footage released. He's lucky he isn't facing attempted murder charges, because if Big Baz tried something like that at a protest, he would've been arrested the moment he was spotted with a sledgehammer. If he'd somehow managed to get to a point of swinging it twice at an officer of the state, he would undoubtedly be facing attempted murder (and Celeste and Tarquin would-be cheering it on)

She’s massively unpopular in the ward that voted her in, now. Many people are calling for a new election because she changed parties, and some are complaining that she does nothing for her ward as she’s too interested in the Your Party stuff. Look at any story mentioning her in either Facebook or news sites local to her ward, and the comments are full of it. They cannot stand her. She’ll never get voted in again.

She seems to be putting all her eggs in the YP basket, possibly having pipe dreams of her becoming the UK's Stalin? She's the only MP to have formally changed her party affiliation to YP. Not even Jezza has done so, despite the registered office of the party being within his Finsbury Park constituency. Given that 2 gaza MPs quit because of there not being a place for socially conservative (I.e. Muslim) voices in the party, I suspect the remaining gaza MPs aren't feeling too confident in signing up. Corbyn seemingly wants to work on unifying and solidifying the party before he makes it official, but Sultanah has jumped in with both feet. It may well backfire for her if YP implodes, while the others may have less egg on their faces by saying they were keen on supporting the grassroots causes of the party rather than being tainted by the mismanagement of the party setup and development. I get the impression of Jezza wanting to be the Westminster-grizzled old hand who thinks he knows from experience how to build such movements, whereas Sultana wants landlords hanging from lampposts NOW, NOW, NOW! in a very student politics kind of way.

Williams, a father of three, was later arrested at a house in Croydon, south London, and charged two days later.

And there, is another massive problem. It is always the wrong sort of people who are breeding.

It's okay though, he'll have to serve 2/3rds of the sentence in jail before being let out to do it all again.

Certainly there are a lot of people out there who are better than me. If this happened to one of mine the revenge would be biblical. Anyone else root for Gerald Butler's character in Law Abiding Citizen ?
 
I think all boys should be locked in a cage until they are 35 years old. No interacting with others. No stimulation. Nothing but four walls and a light that prevents them from sleeping through the day.

Every 6 months they're removed from solitary confinement to have a gender equality test, where if they get a single answer wrong they have their hands and genitals burnt with branding irons.

I think under this situation we'd be able to save every British girl from being raped and mutilated by Tate consuming misogynists.

His net favorability is about -54 at the moment which is about the same as Corbyn when he was kicked out as Labour leader and bojo when he was ousted as PM. Cant really get much lower.

Your optimism is adorable. He’ll be unlucky if he serves half his sentence in prison. They seem to be letting people out after barely a quarter of the sentence served lately. Were’t we commenting a couple of days ago on some bloke who got 16 years and was let out after 2?

Unlike them though I can't see Keir going because his ousting isn't going to improve things. This is a party wide problem now and as such it's better for them to keep him in until there's a coherent plan.
