A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I used to be proud of the NHS. I remember seeing an episode of Malcolm in the Middle where the dad lost his health insurance and was going around with a pan on his head trying not to get injured. And you could laugh at that, "Ho ho, silly Americans with their paid healthcare. I never have to worry about that!"

Except nowadays going into an NHS hospital is basically a death sentence. I've had at least one relative die from sepsis that was completely unrelated to what they went in for. Probably more than one, but at least one where it was very clear.

And another thing that's changed - before I didn't mind paying for other people's healthcare. I never used it, but it was there if I needed it, and in the meantime my tax money was paying for everyone else. Well, who "everyone else" is has changed. I've been to see my GP recently and the waiting area is heaving with nogs and pakis. I might have felt some obligation to my fellow countrymen, but who are these people? I don't feel any connection to them, and yes it makes a difference and I resent paying for them.

I think Reform is going to bin the whole thing, and good riddance.

I used to be the same but 1. I have experienced healthcare in the USA and it is absolutely top notch. The care, the privacy, the dignity, of having a small room with limitations on shared d bathrooms. Not having demented old ladies shitting in a commode with nothing but a curtain as they unleash hell from their bowels. The quality of food. No having the humiliation of being "presented" to a consultant and a gaggle of spotty Herbert junior doctors. It's unreal how much better you get, faster. And 2. I know two people in the USA on their free healthcare, and they both rage it. One was disabled after an accident and the other was on it for a long time. They both rate it highly.

I did a degree in Podiatry and the NHS and how they treat allied health care students on placement is why I do not work there, along with the patients.

It is absolutely soul sucking to constantly deal with old bastards who think that they deserve a free toenail trim because they're old and they've "paid in".

The absolute indignation and the disgraceful way they behave when you tell them, there's no medical need, you're not sick and you are perfectly mobile enough to do it yourself was the nail on the coffin for me, but the other nails included the retarded focus on anything DEI (the only thing which has any place in the NHS of this bent is how dermatological symptoms present differently in non-white patients, and there's actually an excellent book written by someone on this subject. My hate for non whites aside, it's an interesting book), the absurd way they run their supply chain and procurement, and the insane culture of bullying in it.

I get my dental checks and procedures done in the US when I go over because it is infinitely better. As for nursing as an undergrad, I was disgusted by how often nurses missed or did not proceed to test for sepsis. I remember on my first day forcing a doctor to test for sepsis as a death fat on my obs was showing three symptoms, and no nurse had run a test.

The whistleblowing process is also incredibly fucked, too.

Luckily, I have a decent dentist in the next village over from me - good, professional (bit of a fuss pot, but rather that than him not care) but I can now only see him once a year and he may be going private from 2027 as he's being 'ordered' to do dental care on migrants overnight by the Welsh Government.

He is solidly booked for 2026 and even people in the nearby area can't get an appointment, but apparently Eluned 'Loony' Morgan thinks that she can boss him about. He said that all dentists in Wales will go private in order to avoid this stupidity and a new 'Medica' group may form for dental care in Wales as a result.

I actually read the book he "contributed" to - The Good Immigrant. As far as I can remember, his chapter is just kvetching about people doing yoga (cultural appropriation), white people saying "namaste" to him (I don't believe this has ever happened), and that the phrase "chai tea" is redundant because "chai" already means tea (fuck off).

At least his Wikipedia seems to indicate that this unfunny prick hasn't had any paid TV work for about the last five years.

The basic requirement for a hunger strike, is you don't eat right?
I thought leftists were supposed to be horrified by the idea of force-feeding hunger strikers given the UK government used to force milk and eggs (GAG) down the striking suffragettes. What the fuck is supposed to happen here? Have we forgotten your supposed to die for a cause you believe in?

MUH DEMOCRACY: The Government will ask Tory-controlled County Councils if they want to delay their elections till 2027; meaning some Councils could have their elections delayed a second year. The fear of Reform is palpable. Maybe the 'Reform will destroy out democracy' line is true, because now Reform exists the government is destroying our democracy to prevent them getting in!
I was on the bus last night, 6pm ish, very busy on the streets, when we heard a woman screaming. Some ambigious ape had made a move to grab at her. Everyone stood up and the bus driver immediately pulled over to yell leave her alone as did some passers by. I have no idea what the fuck is happening but it really doesn't feel safe at all anymore kiwisisters : (

Given it's the British who introduced tea to India to begin with, he doesn't get to complain when we decide what it's called.

Kind of disappointing, really. He used to be kind of funny, back when he was being self-aware and willing to poke fun at his own culture, but then the BBC came along and threw money at him in exchange for racial grievance mongering and that was that.

Chai tea isn't tea. Tea is a refreshing brew with complex flavours. Chai Tea is taking that brew, stuffing it full of spices like black pepper, star anise and cloves, and cream. It's a spice nuke that obliterates any flavour.

The Guardian: Want to understand the sickness of Britain today? Look no further – a novel explained it all 20 years ago (archive)
So runs the opening not of a recent piece of journalism, but a novel by JG Ballard, Kingdom Come, which despite being almost 20 years old anticipates today’s Britain with eerie precision. In the mid-2000s, Pearson reads up on his new surroundings, only to find the same headlines that assail us in the mid-2020s: “Every day the local newspaper reported attacks on an asylum hotel, the torching of a Bangladeshi takeaway, injuries to a Kosovan youth thrown over the fence into an industrial estate.”

The crusader crosses of St George, the hair clay and bloviating of GB News and the live-streaming, selfie-gurning, hate-spewing of Tommy Robinson – their spirit is better captured in this last fiction by the late Ballard than in many more recent and more breathless titles clogging up the annual best-of lists.

At the fag-end of 2025, the UK stands possibly only three-and-a-half years away from electing rightwing extremists to power, led by a man among whose sparse credentials for office are that he has never “directly racially abused” anyone. To explain this, analysts and campaigners often reach for stories of Russian money or US networks, or for analogies with German nazism. Such accounts emphasise how unusual and exotic such movements are in Britain, how positively foreign. The land that once boasted it couldn’t happen here can now only splutter that at least it didn’t begin here.

This is bad history and worse politics. Analogies can never pass for analysis. Nor does studying the rich funders of Nigel Farage or Robinson explain their hoi polloi followers. Fittingly for a writer who titled one of his stories Myths of the Near Future, Ballard observes the country of his time to glimpse the society of our times.

Suspicious package detonated in Westminster this morning; turned out to be Christmas cards but it was a very speedy response.
Westminster Bridge was placed on lockdown after police discovered a suspicious package.
Bomb disposal squads carried out a "controlled explosion" on the busy bridge after the alarm was raised at around 7.30am on Thursday.
The Met confirmed it received reports of the suspicious item and immediately deployed army disposal units to the scene.
Following the controlled explosion, the package was found to be non-threatening.
Sky News reported the package had contained Christmas cards from a Labour minister.
Has everyone else noticed the huge uptick in both/all sides agreeing 'something' is going to happen soon? I'm seeing multiple commentators and even irl people I know talking about 'something' coming, whether a false flag (to be blamed on the Russians, or Israelis if you are leftwing) or serious attack. Something eerie is in the air.

Birmingham Council celebrates the new Hostile Vehicle protection
Big changes for Birmingham city centre!
🚧
We’ve installed hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) bollards and upgraded CCTV at strategic locations to keep everyone safe in the city centre. These measures stop hostile vehicles from entering pedestrian areas, so you can enjoy the famous Frankfurt Christmas Market with confidence. Hear from Councillor Jamie Tennant and Iain Moran from Crowd Guard about how we’re making Birmingham safer.

I have, from multiple people. False flags/Russia/whatever is the schizo take or an attempt by people to distract others (or themselves) from the reality: Civil war is coming. There's going to be more, larger attacks and open defiance of the authorities in the next year. Everyone knows they're going to do it and they know what would stop it. They also know that any attempt to mass deport muslims now will foment the very uprising they're desperately trying to pretend isn't coming. They've ignored (and even encouraged) the problem for this long in the hope that simply acquiescing to islam would pacify it, but all they've done is store up trouble. I would be unsurprised if we see islamist road blocks going up around majority muslim areas, which they will claim is to "defend" against "fascism".

Given that the Government are trying to 'be nice' to the Tory Councils, this tells me that they are running scared of Nigel and that unless they can control the hive minds of the people can be controlled then the options will be war or demanding a greater indoctrination of the society they want. They can't use persuasion or even press-ganging, therefore violence may be the last option.

The so-called 'Black Swan' event will catch us all cold when it happens - yes, I am aware of the 'Nothing Ever Happens' Meme and mindset, but there are times when something does indeed happen and this then changes the course of history.

Will it be on a par with 9/11 or 7/7?
Will it be Russia, Palestine Action, ISIS/Al Qaeda, Mossad or even the CIA or a 'Lone Wolf'?
How will it happen?
What will the objective be?
Who will be the target/s?

I'm also hearing that security is being beefed up at Windsor Castle and other Royal Residencies.

Twinings chai tea+yorkshire tea bag in a big mug is peak tea.

edit "the event" Won't be violent imo, it will be more civil disruption than civil war. Either power/utility cuts, internet outages, or resource constraints; water, food, warmth.
