A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

There's been an update on the effects of Rachel Reeves' budget:

* The UK's largest bra manufacturer has gone bust
* A submarine contractor has gone under
* A manufacturer of food blenders has gone into liquidation
* A dog kennel has called in the retrievers
* An origami napkin company has folded
* Over 200 strip clubs have gone tits up
* Interflora is pruning its business model
* Dyno-Rod has gone down the drain

The saddest one:

* Mr. Whippy was found dead this morning covered in nuts and raspberry sauce having topped himself

Consider this, go to any working class town or city, any run down shit hole of an area and you will see gambling shops in the double figures, yet, go to a nice, posh town or village and there's nary a betting shop in sight. Surely, preying on those with more money to gamble would be the most lucrative business decision?
Why is that?
I know you are highlighting a different point, but on the double figures bit:

The multiple betting shops in streets (even of the same brand) arose because of regulation limiting the amount of virtual casino type machines a premises were allowed to have. The actual betting counters were literally for show. It was still highly profitable to open another premises, just to have another X amount of these machines out on the floor in a given demographic area. Actual sports betting hardly changed, it was primarily fuelled by degens and crime. Richer degens would just go to a casino and white collar criminals have other ways of laundering and don't so much work with cash.

With some of the "games" having a relative high payout % its easy to wash through these machines. You feed it your untaxed cash and gamble until you hit a big win. Using a virtual roulette table this can be done much quicker than most other means. It will then print out a ticket for you to cash it in at the betting counter, where you now have a "receipt" and it is essentially tax free winnings that can also be declared as income.

I'm looking for where they've missed priced a market / possible arbitrage ( those were the days ! )
Those days are long gone friend.
I still have a 'scam' that works if you fancy getting banned from williamhill?

To be clear, I'm not talking gambling at racecourses, as the gambling part is part and parcel of the event. In the same way I wouldn't want fruities removed from seaside amusments. To me that's less 'gambling' and more paying for an experience.
“I’m happy to for the government to remove this liberty for my own good, surely this isn’t a dark path we constantly thread down.”

An essential part of liberty is the freedom to do stupid self destructive things. Some people will drink themselves to death given access to alcohol, you are calling for the eventual shutting of all pubs with your logic.

Part of the reason they lessoned the tax on gambling was all the firms were buggering off to Gibraltar too.

I can agree with the saturation advertising. The constant push I just find irritating. It doesn't make me bet more frequently or larger sums, but I guess I'm not really the bookmakers' target audience. I'm not betting as a game of chance, it's more akin to I'm looking for their errors. I'm looking for where they've mispriced a market / possible arbitrage ( those were the days ! ) and the maths side of it as much as the sport.
Respect for gaming the gaming and cleaning out the house. It's always good to see someone using the rules to win the game in a way that the rulemakers didn't expect
I wouldn't be seen dead at a bookies surrounded by piikeys gambling their dole money and seedy old men in pervo macs. I'm not spending money I don't have on those £100 a spin electronic gambling machines in the bookie on a council estate ( which I'm assuming is what you take umbrage at ? )
Bookies/betting shops/casinos on high streets should be gone, with the exception of William Hill because it's nostalgia and a regulated, well known name. The random "super lucky 777 spin wins" casino that pop up everywhere with blacked out/covered windows are seedy, seedy places and are filled with chavs and crackies pouring their cashconveter funds into.
A lot of the reason behind the saturation advertising is product differentiation....I don't think it's all aimed at getting people to gamble, that's going to happen anyway, it's the bookmaker trying to get its targets to gamble with them, rather than another bookmaker. From the bookmaker's perspective, it isn't enough for a gambler to place a bet, it has to be with them....thus the advert to differentiate them from the pack.
It's more the fact that people can download an app and use numbers in a bank account to bet on numbers on a phone which mean nothing. I know a lot of this comes down to personal education and agency but I've watched too many young lads throw away hundreds in seconds betting on nothing because they were bored. It shouldn't be that easy to gamble or to throw your money away.

I know a lot of this comes down to personal responsibility, but the whole set up and ease of it is just scumbaggery at the highest level.

Aside from confusing loop-hole laden regulation or outright banning - which I think should happen on phones, leaving online gambling regulated but possible only on laptops/PCs, the only real way I can see to force these scumbags into social decency is ultra high taxation. It would be an easy win for the government.

My big problem with gambling and lootboxes in games aimed at children, is the psychological trickery they use to coerce, entice and in a way force people into gambling. Offering a vice is one thing, creating an artificial want for that vice is something else and, were I in charge, any company using such tactics would see their CEO's and Board hanged live on TV.

You're coming from the wrong angle. People do daft things, they chose to throw their money away in anyway they want. I have no problem with free will or letting people choose to do dumb shit.
I have a very big problem when the choice is not the persons choice but a psychological trick to persuade or coerce people into taking that service.

In a way, it's no different to the scumbag car salesmen who push expensive cars on Ethal and Enid who think they need a £70,000 Tesla when a £10,000 fiat panda would do.

I can see we're not going to agree on this.....
......so long as the salesman isn't offering a "deal they can't refuse" with a gun at their head......and is just telling them a Tesla will save the planet and is playing on their virtue signalling / environmental guilt.....
......then they just have to say NO.

People make bad deals all the time. They do stupid things and if they are weak, let others influence their decisions.
I guess it boils down to you either believe in free markets and individual responsibility or you're a socialist and want to regulate everything.
Just to remind you, Starmer and Reeves are on your team ( I admit, that was a low blow ).
Interesting chat tonight folks....I'm off to invest my Arsenal / Juve winnings. Viva La Ligue des Champions !

This will be like America and we’ll suddenly have a lot of very brown “white” people with names that sound like Star Wars planets.

Or like when blacks demanded all police wear bodycams and then when the bodycams showed their people failing to follow basic instructions given by perfectly reasonable officers, started lobbying for videos and stills to be mosaiced to hide the perp's race.

I can see we're not going to agree on this.....
Probably not. If a company has to make money by preying on the weak and stupid, then that company shouldn't exist because it is weak and pathetic.

......then they just have to say NO.
There are ways to remove a "No" from someone's mind. That's my issue.

I guess it boils down to you either believe in free markets and individual responsibility or you're a socialist and want to regulate everything.
I believe in both, sort of. A company should be able to do what it wants, unless it makes society weaker by being bottom feeding leaches. I don't know what you call that?

I'm off to invest my Arsenal / Juve winnings. Viva La Ligue des Champions !
Enjoy the beers! (Arsenal will throw the title away)

>Reform polling first
>Tories inching over Labour
>Lib Dems supplanted from 3rd place and 4th place by the Labour and Green party respectively
>Reform minority government with Conservatives as primary opposition is a possibility

That would be the funniest outcome, please give it.

Why the fuck is support for the Greens growing? Or is that the queerio idiots in a huff that the other parties no longer prioritise them? Greens are just Tories in wellies on an expensive pushbike. Look at the disaster Germany had under their Green Party. You’d have to be a complete retard to vote for a party who want to hyper tax everything outside of forcibly growing all your own food and only using power you can generate from your own farts.

This is the correct answer. Fixed odds betting terminals FOBTs and money laundering, and then people getting hooked on then. Very bad

I was under the impressions that Green voters are just disillusioned Labour voters who agree with every loony left position Labour has, but now finds it too toxic to vote.

Muslims. They overwhelming vote labour, though at the last election there was a split - which is why Labour lost so many votes.
If Labour aren't doing what the muslims want them to do, they will swap parties. They have feelers in the green party, your party, reform and independents and they will throw their weight behind whichever party will give them what they want.

On some level it's just the flipside of cope that has been pushing people to Reform; 'any group outside of the established Labour-Conservative system has to be better than what we've got'.

I struggled to believe these people exist, but the tabletop game night at my local has frequently been interrupted by a particularly obese individual loudly reminding everyone he'll vote for the Greens while regurgitating Reddit talking points: Reform voters are all low IQ, fascism can only be defeated with bullets, the future is going to be primarily wind energy, etc. forcing us to change rooms. I made the mistake once of asking about the bird-killing machines and was told 'cars kill the same number of birds as wind turbines, so be quiet.'

And he's only *slightly* less insufferable than the troons...
