A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Mr Lammy then announced the following reforms:

  1. Up to £34 million per year in additional funding for criminal legal aid advocates.
  2. match-fund a number of pupillages in criminal law.
  3. Negotiate sitting days with the senior judiciary through the usual concordat process.
    • Aiming to give an unprecedented three-year certainty to the system.
  4. Create new “swift courts” within the Crown court (No jury) for triable either-way cases with a likely sentence of three years or less.
    • A judge alone deciding verdicts.
    • Judges must provide reasoning for their verdicts in open court.
      • (Authors Note: This is similar to the current Civil Court process.)
    • Estimated (By Sir Brian) to deliver justice at least 20% faster than jury trials.
    • The magistracy should decide where a case is heard.
    • prevent defendants from gaming the system.
      • (Authors Note: The UK is officially one of the first countries to state that electing a Jury Trial is "gaming the system")
  5. Limit appeals from the magistrates courts.
    • Only allowed on points of law.
      • (Authors Note: No right of appeal for sentence, or for challenging interpretation of facts.)
    • To "prevent justice from being delayed further".
  6. Increase magistrates court sentencing powers to 18 months.
    • So that they can take on a greater proportion of lower-level offending and relieve pressure.
    • Could be extended to two years, should it become necessary.
  7. Exceptionally technical and lengthy fraud and financial trials, judges will be able to sit without a jury where appropriate.
    • They place undue pressure on jurors to sit for months.
  8. Provide £550 million in multi-year funding for victim support services.
    • Including specialist emotional and practical support for victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence, and increase budgets to reflect rising costs.
Ali Harbi Ali chose the wrong MP.

It's actually quite baffling how Lammy can make gaff after gaff and still have the balls to come out and say he wants to overhaul a large part of the British judicial system (obvious "no mandate" comment goes here).

Want to know an easy way to speed up jury trials? Stop giving judges such massive breaks during trials.
I think they're all of the mindset that they're on borrowed time, so they're intending to push through as much radical legislation as they can, and create as many issues for the next government, presumably Reform. I'm of the opinion they believe that the right will effectively do nothing until 2029.

This has to be a wake-up call for the right. The right has played this kind of respectability politics, and tried to convince the left that they're not the heccin' evil nazis, by slowly adopting the lefts policy. The right has been defensive and retreated for long enough, the right must be the ones on the offensive. The right needs to get in and not only reverse leftism but go further right.

They need to get in and say "We're reinstituting the death penalty, and grooming gang members are up first."

For that reason the right can't wait until 2029 to act. Right wing activists must start laying the groundwork today. It's time for the right to abandon the conception of politics being full of compromises decided at the ballot box. The right must see politics as the left sees politics, it's everywhere and it's not about compromise, it's about domination. Every institution is a battleground, each must be influenced by right wing infiltrators.

If the right wants to win, we can't have schools pumping out left wing students, we can't have left wing movies dominating the media landscape, we can't have left wing judges who'll let rapists off lightly. It must be victory on all fronts, not just in the houses of parliament.

The insane thing is that what Labour are doing would be considered plain fascism if Reform did it. Imagine if Reform were saying they were getting rid of trials, the average leftie would be worried about black vans popping up and kidnapping them.

And the even more insane thing? Reform doesn't actually have to reverse any of this, if they wanted to REALLY go full overton window further right all they have to do is ensure judges follow the rules of the law (that have been modified slightly) and can be imprisoned for not following the law and all of a sudden the court system has swung back to normality.

The salt would be delicious though!

Some good news for once! All the guards and other prisoners at Belmarsh reportedly HATE the Southport killer Axel Rudakubana and show 'no mercy' (according to a prisoner). He faces 52 years in solitary confinement, because inmates keep threatening him. He also attacked a prison officer. If he ever got into the general population he would 1000% be Ian Watkins'd imho. He has nothing but a mattress and a bed in his cell.
Whilst living in the "box" environment, Rudakubana won’t receive any privileges. His cell is said to be "absolutely filthy", with the inmate reportedly refusing to wash and having not had a haircut for several months.
A Metropolitan Police investigation is currently underway after an officer monitoring Rudakubana had boiling water thrown over them through the cell door hatch.
And
Merseyside Police are now examining whether Rudakubana’s parents should face criminal charges for not doing enough to prevent their son from launching his attack.

Just been reading about this, absolutely no pity for the scumbag.

I hope he isn't Watkins'd as I want him to suffer every day until he dies - he's an animal and sadist.

If we can't hang him, make him suffer.

Fucking hell, another one? How often is this happening these days??

There is no way in hell that driver thought they could make it through there. Even worse and a mild PL I know that area and while it's been a while the road leading up to the bridge typically has enough parked cars that it's functionally a single shared lane for both sides so it should not have been coming up at speed.

It was also the middle of the day so lighting should not have been an issue.

Good grief, there's barely enough room for a single decker - look how much clearance the fire engine has. For Christ's sake, they need to do something about these idiot bus drivers.

Yep. This smacks heavily of a driver following the sat nav no matter what.

I got a mate near the area to browse the local Facebook pages. Pupils had gone swimming in Chorley and were on the return journey. There is no good reason for the route back to be any different but it was and this is what happened.

In mild feel good news there's a local bakers (proper large scale bakers supplying multiple places not a bakery shop) not far up the road who opened the doors to pupils and staff so they had somewhere out of the weather to stay while alternative transport was arranged.
