A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The Secretary of State for Justice, Mr David Lammy, has officially announced in the House of Commons his proposals for criminal court reform during a speech.
First Reeves getting caught lying about the economy (again) to hike up taxes, now the spade says jury trials are "gaming the system". I'd hardly say this is merely "shooting yourself in the foot", and more like "lighting a bundle of dynamite and shoving it up your arse".

this really seems like the first step to 'no more jury trials'. if people accept that the swamped court system requires no jury trials for this, what's the line that they won't allow to be crossed? when it is too much? "the courts are backed up a whole five days. ever so sorry chap, you will not be receiving that jury trial for when you beat up muhammad for raping and murdering your daughter, the judge has already decided why you did it and that you're an evil bigot. your defence fees have been deducted from your family's bank accounts and your new prison housing costs will now be deducted monthly. please make sure yer prison loicense is paid m8."

I hope they ram this through ASAP, find a based prosecutor and judge, then sentence the entire House of Commons with 3 years in jail. Tough luck, dumbass. Can't appeal LMAO

It's actually quite baffling how Lammy can make gaff after gaff and still have the balls to come out and say he wants to overhaul a large part of the British judicial system (obvious "no mandate" comment goes here).

Want to know an easy way to speed up jury trials? Stop giving judges such massive breaks during trials.
They tried it in Scotland. The Tories stopped it before it could launch. They're trying to turn our legal system into a continental European one. This is some weird Davos thing and it isn't going away as it is supported by most of our elites.

It's because he knows that Starmer won't sack him.

Unless there's an issue like #MeToo and a few female Labour peeps have solid evidence that he's been 'a bit handsy' with them then he won't be under pressure to go.

The Burnham fans want Alex Davies-Jones to take over - she's a rampant feminist who dreams of being Wales' version of Jess Phillips, but compared to Ooga Booga she's a fucking genius.

She does at least have the knack for getting things done in her seat and, though I can't stand her personally, I do have sympathy for her after she was attacked by Palestine Action morons.

As for the crap Lammy is trying to pull, it will actually result in more Judges, Barristers and Solicitors taking strike action post Christmas and thereby nuking the plans before they even get off the ground.

The common consensus is that even if a perp is guilty beyond belief, he/she deserves the right to be tried by Jury - and let's not forget that if the boot was on the other foot that the wokes would be demanding their right to a trial by Jury.

Whilst I agree that the time being taken to get some cases to court is too long, Lammy's plans are not the way to go about freeing up time and space in the judicial system. It'll end up that anybody sentenced to three years or less automatically goes on a tag and has to attend probation - oopsy doodles, there's a lack of probation officers as well...

Therefore, three years sentence, sent home, talk via mobile to a probation officer once a week for five minutes or so, attend counseling and do a few days unpaid work... might as well post some more Starmer Memes...

Anyway, I'm surprised that nobody has (so far) mentioned the former Premier League footballer who's in a lot of hot water:

Some people (wokes) are stating that it's Joey Barton... I think they want it to be him but I doubt that it is him - have heard it's a former West Ham United player but I won't name names.

Man, how much and how long must the British suffer? This is pathetic, how the fuck is it possible to make an almost 1000y old law obsolete so easily. Also offensive is how this nigger got such a high status in UK. Was he born as a UK citizen? Was he so great that he deserved that role? I highly suspect it was positive discrimination.

"Last year, the entire budget for courts and legal aid was £5.5 billion, which is almost exactly the same amount of money—£5.4 billion—that we spent on illegal migrants."

If you ever felt like the government cared about you in any way, this statement should really drive home how much of a worthless serf they consider you to be.

Thank you, Mr Speaker.

This morning, more than 50 Crown courtrooms sit empty in England alone. In fact, over 21,000 court days have gone unused this year. Why? Not because there are too many juries, but because the Justice Secretary will not fund the sitting days. Had he done so, the backlog would have shrunk by up to 10,000 cases, but the fact is that it has risen this year.

The truth is that scrapping juries is a choice. This Government could find the money to bear down on the backlog of asylum claims and to spend more on benefits, but not to fund the courts to sit round the clock. Last year, the entire budget for courts and legal aid was £5.5 billion, which is almost exactly the same amount of money—£5.4 billion—that we spent on illegal migrants. He defends their rights under the European convention on human rights, but not our rights under Magna Carta. And for what? He cannot even guarantee that in four years’ time these changes will have reduced the backlog. With this Justice Secretary, it is justice delayed and justice denied.

Much of the rest of the package announced today is sensible, but why has it taken 17 months? The Bar Council, the Law Society and the Criminal Bar Association have all said that jury trials are not the problem.

Jury Trials to Be Scrapped in England for Complex Financial Crimes
Bloomberg (archive.ph)

Juries will be scrapped in England and Wales for a range of criminal trials, including the most complex financial crime, in the biggest shake-up of the country’s justice system in decades.

Justice Secretary, David Lammy, said that in order to ease a record backlog of criminal cases, judges would sit alone in trials where the suspect is likely to get a sentence of three years or less. Juries will remain the “cornerstone” of the justice system for the most serious violent crime.

The “once in a generation” reform is “desperately needed because this government inherited an emergency in our courts,” Lammy said, laying out his proposals in parliament on Tuesday.

The current backlog in the Crown Courts of England and Wales stands at about 78,000. New trials are currently being as far away as 2030 meaning victims of crime and suspects are waiting years for their cases to be resolve.

While the proposals aren’t quite as radical as initially trailed they do represent the most significant shift in how criminal justice operates in generations. Lammy’s proposals largely stick to recommendations made by Brian Leveson, a retired judge, in July.

Lower ranking magistrates will be handed higher sentencing powers and “swift courts” will be introduced to move through the criminal process more quickly. A defendant’s right to a jury trial will be restricted to prevent them from “gaming the system,” Lammy said.

The jury system in the UK dates back to the Magna Carta and has remained central to the UK’s criminal justice system for more than 800 years in one form or another. But successive governments have grappled with a system that has struggled to deal with the record backlog of cases, shortages of judges and lawyers, crumbling court buildings and trial lawyer strikes over low pay.

Still, the jury trial is seen by many as to be a crucial mainstay of a functioning democratic society.

Opponents of Lammy’s plans say that jury trials are not the cause of the backlog, and should be preserved to ensure that people faced with crimes are given a fair hearing.

The proposals could “compromise public trust and confidence in our criminal justice system through curtailing jury trials,” Barbara Mills, chair of the Bar Council, said in a statement on Tuesday. “We urge the government to reconsider pursuing radical changes under the mistaken belief that radical equals effective.”

The reasons cited for the necessity of these reforms are:

  1. A 78,000 record backlog of cases in the Crown Court.
    • Which is is projected to reach 100,000 cases by 2028
Gee, maybe if you didn't arrest people for Facebook posts, you wouldn't have this backlog. You bongs are fucked.

I'm not even going to make a joke at the expense of british kiwi sisters.

Like this is some lunancy to even hear out in a civil society. How can there be justice without a jury of ones peers or non state entities? How can injustice be fought civilly without the ability to appeal such injustice? :cryblood:

Am I understanding this right? So right now every crime goes through trial by jury in the UK? If Timmy steals a £1.50 pack of gum or something, he would have to be seen by a jury trial? And part of this proposal is to change it so less important crimes are just seen by a judge instead? That doesn't seem like a problem, that's how the US works with a lot of stuff but the difference here for the UK is that it seems you aren't allowed to request a jury trial and obviously no appeal for crimes that put you in jail for 1.5 years or less. Judges can be biased and put you in jail for just short enough to stop you from being able to do ANYTHING about it. That is just fucked.

Don’t ask me, I’m packing a suitcase and getting paperwork in order.
Should be out by 2029 all going to plan.
Only change is to move investments to you guys instead of keep them in Britain.

It's incredibly retarded how much of the bad policies in the world are driven by idiot Europhiles

All the government has to do to cut the backlog is hire more judges but that wouldn't allow for social engineering.
