A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

My wife and son were coming down on thr train yesterday after visiting my parents up north. I was literally waiting for them in the Spoons near Euston when this news broke.

Not the same line as this stabbing, but the fact that this happened while they were on a train is still pretty fucking chilling.

The accounts I've read sound horrifying. Imagine being trapped on that train and feeling so powerless to do anything. I think I'm going to need to start carrying something (recommendations welcome) , because fuck being in that situation and having some darkie slash and stab you while you just try and block with your hands.

That is the weirdest thing. We're sat on the sofa with a coffee and his nibs has just said the exact same thing.

Your only hope would be if everyone else in the carriage (hopefully more than a couple of people) actively leapt on the lunatic and mass pinned him down. Too many people hide in that situation. I know it’s natural to, and it’d be my first instinct too, but there’s literally no way to get away in that situation. You have to take out the nutjob by any means necessary.

Nasty, nasty bastard. It’s going to be very interesting to hear the real details behind this story, assuming they ever come out. It’s left me wondering if it’s the same racist kind of attack as the one on that bus in the US with the Ukrainian girl.

Very glad to hear your wife and kids are safe.
 
Yup. Was on a train yesterday,and earlier in the week and had already planned on shielding my daughter behind my rucksack if anything kicked off. It's heavy, tall (designed for camping etc) and has metal framing in the back. I had no idea until now about the attack. I used to think that I was just being paranoid packing a bag that I could use as a club/shield but clearly I'm not. All fucking part and parcel.....

Oh, yeah don't get me wrong, I'm no hard man. If I saw some nutter with a knife on the street I'd probably just run off. But we're apparently looking at situations where they're cornering people in situations where that's not even an option. So what else are we to do? There's no coppers on the train, I don't think I've even seen a member of the British Transport Police in person.

So this is what we're reduced to - rooting through my toolbox trying to pick out something that might be of some use next time I'm forced to travel by train (although I'll be driving more in light if this).

What a joke. Oh maybe I'll rasp the guy charging at me with a machete.

Thanks for the well wishes. I know it's cheesy and self centred to go online and be like "omg that was literally almost me" after a tragic event. But seriously, these things are getting too close to home for me these days.

If it's always racism when a white does anything to a brown then it absolutely is racism if an ethnic harms a white.

I've started running out of patience and fucks to give. If I hear someone call boat vermin "refugees" I'll correct them and say they're illegal immigrants. I can't stand how we,and how we think about this shit, is being controlled and influenced by the language the media and the State choose, very carefully,to use. That's some Orwellian shit.

As for "weapons", such as we're permitted. Look up the legislation and choose accordingly. That's the best advice I've got for now. Know the Law and know your rights.

Oh, also : anyone got anything on what type of Muslim or tongue clicker stabbed those people on the train? Usually there's chatter and that chatter is right but (totally possible I'm missing something) seems like there's nothing.

That's the most sensible thing you can do, even if you were a hardman. People who think they can take on someone slashing at them with a knife are also people who have never been in a fight. Unless you can bludgeon them with something from behind and undetected get the fuck out of there if you are the only man in your group and make sure the people you are with are safe.

Also, no one knows how they'd react in a situation like this until it happens. Unless you're doing shit like using a child as a shield, no one should be ashamed of just getting the fuck out of there.

Sorry for the double post, but you don't have a right to use weapons. You barely have a right to defend yourself. Legally, if you have the opportunity to retreat you have to or you can end up in front of a judge along with the person attacked you.

A lot of this is about optics. If you brained some Mohammed enjoyer with a fire extinguisher as he tried to Minecraft a school playground you won't get charged (you had better well get a lawyer though as there will be parts of the legal system who will want to), but if you're a woman who is regularly beaten by her husband and you pick up a kitchen knife when a man twice your size decides he's going to kill you this time then you are going to go to prison.

Sligh PL but I walk to worj through a poorly lit park. I have a small but incredibly sturdy torch in my pocket during this walk just in case. If I ever had to defend myself then I'm going to brain the fucker and then leave as I don't trust thee police to have my back if I reported it. If anything some charity will provide the junky with a lawyer and I'll bankrupt myself getting legal representation.
 
The fact that women and children cannot protect themselves is horrifying. In most accounts I have read, most males attacked or killed are defending people. The media coverage of this has been disgusting. I turned off TalkTV out of range. All these thoughts and prayers shit, do nothing. Our own Government is using us as vectors, then just shrugging off our murders with "thoughts and prayers." There has been a knife attack carried out by a migrant every day this week.

I am tired of being afraid. I have to travel out using Heathrow in a month, and I am fucking terrified because I have to use the train etc, for 12 hours. I should be happy going to visit my other half, but I am petrified of being in public for long periods.

Fucking legalize mace, it is a good deterrent.

I feel you, man. I had to walk a woman home the other month; she had her daughter and was clearly being followed. She was barely 5 feet and a rake. Poor fucker has to rely on adrenaline to dispatch her stalker. At least let women defend themselves, guess what, it was a fucking nigger, too. Every time I see her she stops to give thanks. No one should live like that.

At any feds reading, yes, this person is a NIGGER because any self-respecting black person does not need to follow an unarmed woman with her teenage daughter at 23 o'clock. These people just want to rape and kill.

Trains are so much more of a nightmarish scenario- sardine can full of people, minutes between stations- 15 minutes for Huntingdon. We already discussed how buses feel when they get on. I do think this is the last straw for a lot of people because of how recent its been after Uxbridge and because all of us get the train and all of us fucking hate how overcrowded, late, and shitty they are.
In terms of the lack of our ability to defend ourselves I have always believed in the incompetence of CPS, the slowness of trial, and my willingness to run to the media and cry unfair if I was in a situation I had to defend myself (much like the lady who complained to the papers about her £150 fine, they will fuck off if you make a fuss imho)

it’s cool that silkhs are allowed to carry daggers around but Brit’s aren’t allowed anything for defense, maybe time for a little conversion? Or at least, if anyone asks.
