A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Dear tap-dancing Christ. That's impressively evil.
Back when she was running in 2016 she told this story about a horrible sexist thing that happened to her when she was a law student. A guy in college came up to her and berated her for taking a college place that could have gone to another man! Because men in college couldn't get drafted, so she took a place from a man who could have used it not just to get a law qualification, but to maybe not die.

And she was disgusted by his audacity. That was where, if I was American, I would have decided not to vote for her. She could have even said something like; 'He had a point, I felt bad about the situation my male peers were in and even though I ultimately elected to keep my college place, it was that moment that drives me to make that choice be of service to future generations, and do what I could to end future wars.' Then wank on about Bill's efforts in the middle east and Northern Ireland, and imply she also aims to spread peace.

But no. She was the victim because a man pointed out an uncomfortable truth to her about what was happening to her male peers in the US when she was young.

They are targeting LEGAL migration, people whom are nurses, teachers, work within scientific industries and academia etc. Do we have too much, perhaps, but these people contribute to our country in every single way, and most likely integrate
Ctrl- F “the food”
No results.
Damnnit you almost had the immigration trifecta.
I’m sure we’ll get you a nice seat when our Nige starts the remigration flights.
My day is brightened. The kids might just be alright
Over heard an interesting conversation the other day. Words to the effect of
“I don’t like Nigel but labour and tories don’t care for me or the country so I’ll be voting reform.”
The young might be alright.

Hilary Clinton voicing an anti-war sentiment! Now there's a notion. Could as well say that King Herod was good with children.

Hilary has long been the most blood-thirsty demon in politics. In his autobiography "Duty" by Robert Gates who was defence secretary under both Bush and Obama (which says a lot to survive a change in administration) he says that Obama was "51/49" on whether to attack Libya or not, in Obama's own words. And that Hillary was campaigning day and night to persuade Obama to do it. She got her wish. And they destroyed Libya and turned it into a giant terrorism factory (yes, far more than it currently was). The Ariana Grande concert bombing in Manchester is, indirectly, one small consequence of many from Hillary's blood lust. As is much of the wave of mass immigration as Libya formed something of a barrier to Sub-Saharan migrants. Gaddafi himself said that if Libya falls Europe will see a flood of African migrants. And so it came to pass. A large proportion of them are coming directly through the now failed state of Libya. It might seem a bit of a call back or off-topic to be talking about Hilary, but all these things are connected and something as large as overthrowing an entire country has consequences for decades to come.

I know, that's why I said she could've just talked about her husband's past and try and gain from that association. But she couldn't even be bothered to even hint toward lying.

She actually really and truly believes she is the victim because someone pointed out to her that by women taking college places, men were denied an opportunity to avoid being drafted. She didn't have enough empathy or imagination to understand that the men were in a much worse situation and that she should either shut up about that story or spin it in a way that suggests she deserved the presidency. She's not just dark and evil, she actually believes that she is right and good.

They told me immigration didn't cause housing shortages. They told me!

Racial tensions fuelled by housing shortage, says minister

Racial tensions in Northern Ireland are being fuelled by a shortage of housing, the communities minister has said.

Gordon Lyons, whose department oversees housing, said there is "absolutely no excuse for the racism", but he can "fully appreciate and understand why in many communities… [people] are really concerned about what is happening".

He added that these concerns are born out of some people waiting "years" for social housing, meanwhile people seeking asylum are given accommodation in their community.

The latest Home Office statistics, as of June 2025, external, show that 2,228 people were housed in what is called "dispersal" accommodation.

This type of accommodation is longer-term temporary housing, managed on behalf of the Home Office by private operators.

Lyons said this accommodation tended to be "in communities where housing is cheaper" and is not "evenly spread throughout Northern Ireland".

"It tends to be in those areas that are already deprived, that there is already pressure," he told The State of Us podcast.

In June, the streets of Ballymena in County Antrim saw several nights of violence disorder, described by police as "racist thuggery, pure and simple".

A Home Office spokesperson said: "Over the past year, we have cut hotel spending by over half a billion pounds by speeding up asylum decisions, returning more than 35,000 people with no right to remain, and working closely with local authorities to close all asylum hotels by the end of this parliament."

Problem 'massively needs addressed'

Louise McCullough, the chairperson of east Belfast community charity Elevate East, said the housing situation "relates very closely to a lot of the social issues".

"People are upset that someone from out of the area has been given a house in the area that several families had their eye on, for example," she said.

"And I really want to impress on people that the issue is not that an out-of-area family got that one house, this issue is that it's only one house."

Ms McCullough told The State of Us that Northern Ireland's housing problem "massively needs addressed".

"We have a huge homeless population, people are living on top of each other, overcrowding, and there is a real opportunity there," she said.

"We need to be looking at the people who are making the decisions about building houses."

Lyons said he is "looking at all of the different levers" available to him to increase housing supply.

"There's nothing more fundamental than housing," he added.

The minister highlighted one proposal he would be bringing to the executive is to use "surplus land" owned by the public sector to build more social homes.

"We have public sector land right across Northern Ireland, it's about the size of County Armagh," he said.

"To build social homes we need some form of subsidy, if we can't get cash subsidy I'm asking that the executive give me some land so that I can build."

The minister said this would "open up huge additional capacity" for housing.

In June, the BBC reported that the Northern Ireland Executive will only fund work on about 1,000 new social houses this year, far short of its own target.

The Programme for Government committed to starting work on at least 5,850 new-build social homes by 2027.

That equates to about 2,000 new building starts per year.

However, on the basis of the current budget, the number of homes started this year will be lower than the 1,504 started last year.

Figures published at the end of August, show in the second quarter of this year 49,129 households in Northern Ireland were on a social housing waiting list.

Checking in with an early mail dump here, will be off the farms for a bit (don't worry, the plod aren't carting me away for wrong-think... just yet anyway). Should be back in a week.

Anyway, I'm sure that the GB News will be reported here (maybe, if it's not all paywalled now...)

Tony Blair will be on the 'Board of Peace' for the new Gaza MegaCity defence force.

The only board that Tony B Liar should be on, is one he's nailed to as it's launched from a trebuchet, engulfed in flames and aimed at a vaseline factory.

Every council and government is saying we need to build more houses. But the problem doesn't get solved because all those houses end up being given away to foreigners as soon as they're built. How do you compete with the government as a renter? They are spending millions a day on single hotels for these vile creatures. What is a family supposed to do?

Royal Mail to open 8,000 branches on British high streets for first time in major £43.9m deal
I think Brits should be asking questions about this. How can you open 8000 stores on premium property for only 40million? Why can’t small business open in these areas instead of high street being boarded up exactly?

It's easy to find money to give to brown people you bigot. And you know every single one of these will be pakis.

It's just a rebranding of Collect+ shops, but the typical GB News headline clickbait.

@Made In Wales You gotta go somewhere else for your news, man. Their headlines are total bollocks. Clickbait at best, misleading at worst.

GB news used to be pretty good but now it's clickbait behind a paywall. I don't understand why they've gone for that business model when they had potential to be Reform's right hand media source and replace the BBC entirely if they hadn't.

Makes no sense either. For how much digital versions of things are typically worse, Royal Mail/Post Office should be doing much more of it. I'd much rather put my item on a scale, tap my card, put the sticker on and drop it in the box. Not deal with some obese mouth breathing cunt who can't hear you through the glass and huffs and puffs if she needs to get up and pick something up. Fuck Amazon in general but their lockers are good.

Other than that, I don't know what else the post office even does nowadays that you can't already do much quicker and easier online. A certain demographic do need them (oldies), but as crass as it sounds they are dying out so more and more people will be able to cope with using digital services rather than setting foot in a post office.

Deliveries are shit too. Dropping off in a safe place consists of on your front doorstep or thrown over your back gate in the rain nowadays. I'm a bit of a hypocrite complaining because honestly, I'd rather they do that than cause me to have to drive miles to their sorting office where another miserable twat is on the counter, but still. It would help if they gave you more than 1 millisecond to answer the door before fucking off.

FUCK. I’ve been baited. Elaborate for the aussies?
The Royal Mail is so wank they give you the option of picking up your parcel from a designated shop.

Collect+ gives you the option of having your mail lost before it reaches your doorstep or gets rifled by some inbred Paki in-between scratchcards.

FUCK. I’ve been baited. Elaborate for the aussies?
Being a double posting faggot but it's for informative purposes. Basically, in most high streets you would have a branch of the post office, either on its own or a whole counter in a shop which was a full on post office just in another shop. Since Royal Mail has been in terminal decline they have gone to having a single till in a paki shop or the like where they do bare basic stuff like receiving parcels that you can pick up later or taking parcels off you that you have already paid postage for online (basically just being a big postbox). Some have other services but it's a pain, my local one can take parcels you have paid postage for already at anytime, but if you want to buy postage there you need to be there between the hours of 9-930 or you're out of luck (more hours than that but you get my point, it's usually the time everyone is at work).

They handle a basic banking functions for places that lost bank branches. I try to use cash as much as possible in my day-to-day business. My options for depositing cash are the corner shop with a post office desk, or driving twenty miles to the nearest "banking hub", which is also run by the post office.

Since Royal Mail has been in terminal decline
How dare you. The privatisation of the Royal Mail and splitting off the Post Office has been a resounding success.

I'm spoilt for choice now. I can have my mail late, lost or stolen.

Piss taking aside, when your gas bill regularly arrives on your doorstep two weeks after the date on the letterhead, are we any better off than when the mail was delivered by stagecoach?

Other than that, I don't know what else the post office even does nowadays that you can't already do much quicker and easier online
Passports.

There is a lot of ways those forms can be slightly wrong and you have to start again a month later. It was less than a tenner when I renewed and they took care of everything including making sure the photo would be accepted, took responsibility for making sure the forms were correct and posting the application securely.

Frankly I’d like to go back to physical tax discs from the post office too to make buying and selling on a car easier.
