Pregnancy/abortion stuff is more of a hot topic for women, for obvious reasons. I'd imagine working in the health system the things she's seen might make this subject a bit harder to ignore or gloss over. Any old hand at protests knows the game they play. It goes like this: one side that holds the protests bumps those rookie figure numbers up, the other side opposing the protests severely under counts and plays it down. If you are lucky, truth lies in the middle. But sometimes they skew the numbers so much it can make it difficult to say. Anyway, that's a safe heuristic absent any other facts (like actual photos).
Did they ever agree an accepted number on that? I remember estimates being anywhere from 600,000 to 1.5 million.
I think this is a case where the truth definitely does lie somewhere in the middle. I was there that day and I've never seen anything like it (fat lot of good it did anyway eh lads, remember them raising a glass to us all from the HoP as we sauntered by?). There was a fucking lot of people at that Stop the War protest and I would say definitely somewhere over a million, and maybe not far off 1.5 (but that's probably stretching it).
It's milling about under the assumption that a toothless show of hands matters in terms of politics. People genuinely think that if you show the government that they, their actions, and their ideology are hated, that the government will go ahead and leave. They won't. But it is nice to see so many people willing to go out and march around to demonstrate that they are pissed off.

about, these kind of things are barometers and thermometers of just how hot it's getting and I'm pretty certain, that in that sense, the establishment takes these things very seriously and they are paying more attention right now than they ever were back in those heady, giddy, gay days of Stop the War etc. etc.

I mean, they did, but it was half-arsed. They were throwing bottles and cans at the police cordon where the counter protest was. There was no big surge and I didn't see anyone getting yanked out of the crowd either (which was a surprise). The police have been a lot more light-handed than I would have expected so far.
When I saw the numbers it reminded me of a prison, where there are 2000 inmates and maybe (if you're lucky) 200 prison officers/warders/wtf they call themselves these days. Everyone in that situation knows it's the prisoners who run the prison and they govern by consent.

I've been in a police riot where protesters were murdered in cold blood by the police and their horses. I've been kettled more than once too. Speaking from experience, it kind of dampens your enthusiasm for that 'sort of thing', if you know what I mean.
Considering the numbers, this has been about a billion times more civilised than the Notting Hill Carnival.
