A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Genetically, there’s a core culture. Cheddar man has a living relative in the area. Because things were so much smaller scale before, what English culture is is actually a rough broad overarching Englishness, overlying regional English cultures. We identify as Yorkshiremen, West Country, Black Country, Norfolk, geordies, etc. Even with the globohomo, you still have strong regional accents, regional dialects, and you can tell where someone’s from within fifty miles, sometimes within ten, if you’ve an ear for it. A Sheffield accent is different to a derby or a Nottingham one.
Same with Wales and Scotland. Lowlanders, east v west coast, Black Isle, that weird accent up by Fraserborough. It’s a very localised culture, but is IS culture. Yes we have have all sorts washed up on our shores over the millenia but there’s been a core population here since the ice age ended.

I agree on the plumb line. right now it’s pure rage, and people know what they want, they want ‘like it was before’ but as soon as that coalesces into a set of policy issues that’s reasonable, things get interesting.

This did the opposite of vindicating Marx and in fact lent credence to Hegel's perspective on societal development. Marx's essay on the event is unmitigated cope.

The thing is, which 'before?' Many people have something like the 90s in their heads, when the UK was a bit over 90% white. Others want to go back further, maybe like the early 80s, then it was 95%+ white. Some want to push back all the way to pre Windrush, when it was pretty much 99.9% white.

For many people, it comes down to what they knew growing up, yet what they knew wasn't reality. As an Irish person, I grew up watching a lot of British tv in the 80s and 90s, assuming that Britain was an awful lot more than 5-10% other races. I was really shocked when I read the statistics in the 2000s. I'd genuinely have assumed less than 2/3s of British people were white. It's been a long running social propaganda to give people a false impression of their own country.

Now I can't actually imagine a totally white Britain happening again, and even having grown up in a totally white Ireland - I can't imagine that either. I do have a 90s style society in my head when I feel I want to go back. But having read about Father Joe Williamson and his struggles in the mid-1950s against foreign grooming gangs that were already well embedded at that point, whatever it goes back to, has to take into account just how deep the rot is, how far back it goes, and how it immediately began as soon as any sort of larger scale migration was allowed.

Bloody mental, Labour have shot themselves in the foot here massively (allowing 16/17 y/o the vote). Their 24% won't cover for the huge gap in their popularity for anyone older than a student.

Reform at 23% is just where we need to be and the Greens on 6% does surprise me a bit.

Looks like being 'woke' is starting to become passe - if only Denayer hadn't been chosen as the Greens leader and they had focused more on the environment than virtue signalling... oh well, vegan chickens coming home to roost...

Corbyn's party is very interesting and certainly they'll do well in London, Birmingham, Manchester etc. but how will the urban vote compare with the rural vote which is either more Liberal (in Devon and Cornwall for instance) or Conservative (in Wiltshire and the Cotswolds).

The Labour vote is rapidly dying off - in South Wales, where it used to be a case of 'I'm voting Labour cause my family do' that's no longer the case; it's now Reform UK v Plaid Cymru with maybe a smattering of Lib Dem student types who want to re-join the EU more so than they want a discussion over whether or not Wales leaves the Union and becomes an independent country.

Of course, Plaid is itself losing voters to Gwlad...

Very interesting times we are living in.

I knew younger people were sort of gravitating a bit right but that's so strange to know Reform is just about as popular as Labour amongst 16 and 17 year olds. Student debate clubs at colleges and unis are going to finally be fun for them again.

I clocked that. They're cherry picking people out of the crowds now. Thats not a good sign. They used to do that regularly with the football crowds. This isn't just about keeping public order now, they've got a to-do list.

Fuck me, Lee Cohen does a lot of ballwashing. That entire article is just saying everything that's happening now with the protests is actually because Musk, Vance and Trump helped.

Vance is the only one who's made a reasonable effort with his comments from a few months ago about free speech. Trump is staying quiet for diplomatic reasons (and didn't confront Starmer when Starmer lied to his face about free speech) and Musk is just a midge you need to swat away every other day when he posts something.

Police have issued an 'armed military personnel on patrol' alert to residents of a cluster of Warwickshire villages. The Ministry of Defence asked Warwickshire police to pass the warning on to residents in and around Kineton and surrounding villages in South Warwickshire.

The reason is unknown, but it "will not be a huge shock to residents in these villages considering Kineton is home to a 2,500 acre army base Defence Munitions (DM) Kineton - the largest ammunition depot in western Europe."
