A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I'm a first gen immigrant and an NHS worker. Came to the UK in 2009, I studied/worked for 10+ years before obtaining indefinite leave and subsequent citizenship.

Me and my dad (visiting me for the holidays, doesn't speak much English, wanted to see speaker's corner since we come from a country where free speech isnt a thing) are visibly non-white, and ended up being pulled into a heated argument at Speakers Corner with multiple white British racists accusing immigrants like me of being everything that's wrong with the UK. That people like me don't pay taxes, are stealing their jobs, and should "Get the fuck out of their country".

I know there's no point arguing with these kinds of people, but at this point we were surrounded and my Fight response kicked in so I just started arguing back, not knowing how to leave the conversation.

At some point, I felt a firm hand on my shoulder and turned to find a white (British?) father and his son listening in. He shook his head, and simply said to me "Not all of us are like that. I for one am glad that you're here, and thank you for what you're doing for our NHS."

The racists then called me a "dirty Chinese commie", and that they wouldn't trust someone like me operating on them in the NHS even if they needed life saving surgery. Lol.

The dad and son looked at us and started laughing, we also started laughing. The futility of the argument suddenly became incredibly apparent. They started walking and talking, leading us away from the racists, slowly out from the crowd before letting us continue on our way.

Thank you, for stepping up and setting a great example for your son (and my dad) that dunking on immigrants is not a British value.

And also for teaching me that just because the circus is in town, it doesn't mean you gotta line up to get pie'd in the face by those clowns.

tried not having my hopes up, but it still hurts.

I was groomed and in consequetive sexually/emotionally abusive relationships from 13-18 which I never reported or told any authorities about. I've been working through it in therapy slowly for like 10 years.

Then at the start of July, I was spiked and sexually assaulted after Pride. I was bruised, in shock, next morning went to the A&E and the police, they started off quite fast.. then nothing.

This morning I got a call from them to say that theyve exhausted CCTV and got no further leads, I turned a corner without CCTV and they couldn't find me. DNA didn't come back with a hit in their system, so they're closing my investigation for now but would reopen if a DNA hit comes back.

There were some colleagues with me who saw a man giving me a bottle which I drank from, but they said they couldn't prove that it would've been the same guy who assaulted me. Even though they're willing to speak to the police they don't seem interested in pursuing their lead.

I never had high hopes, I know this was the likely outcome. But a part of me really sort of wished that now that I was an adult, I could do the right thing and maybe see some justice for once.

Now it just feels like another unresolved bag of trauma added to the shit pile.

Has any one directly asked any of the politicians why they're supporting and enabling the invasion? How are these people able to leave their homes without everyone constantly harassing them about it? If I lived near one every time I saw them I'd shout across the street "What about the little girls being raped arsehole?" and get all my mates to do the same. The problem is the culture that has evolved around therapy in the last few decades. As soon as you hear people say "everyone would benefit from therapy" you know something is up.

Sitting on a leather sofa and having a chat has significantly limited value if you don't commit to it and internalise whatever breakthrough you might come to with the aid of a therapist. Particularly now that there seems to be a rise in people saying that certain styles of therapy (basically the ones that do anything close to approaching challenge and accountability) are now problematic.

It's a bit like rehab, you don't just walk through a magic door and suddenly solve all your problems, you've got to actually put some graft in. Yet the expectation seems to be: go to therapy, ???, become mentally stable.

Not involved in therapy at all but I have many peers who are chronic therapy-goers and I've seen no improvement in their behaviour/attitudes as a result of therapy.
