A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

As for a change to the asylum system. How? The department is notoriously understaffed, and protocols like this take months. You cannot rubber-stamp them because there is literally no social housing left, and the councils cannot financially take them on. For example, it's so bad in Birmingham for social housing that they're trying to put people in social housing in neighbouring councils, but neither party can do it due to costs and stock. The builders are refusing to build due to no actual return, so they're at an impasse.

We're rapidly getting to the point where councils and the government throw their hands up and go "You don't have to go home but you can't stay here" to all the illegals. Flat out telling them to leave with no income or housing. There's no other outcome possible if there isn't a major turn around.

What happens to a country when a million Africans and Pakis have nothing to lose and no way to survive except crime? We're rapidly approaching a failed state situation.

Social housing waiting lists are in years. Double digit years, not just a year off. The waiting lists are ridiculous and people are being told to rent privately and use housing benefits to pay for it. But housing benefits can't cover the cost of a 1 bedroom flat in most areas let alone more. If you need council housing you're better off buying a tent or a caravan and hoping a local farmer takes pity on you.

How dirty do you have to be to need two showers per day? Are you trying to wash the brown off?

They think we smell bad because we're ethnically different and different ethnicitys smell bad to each other. The way we think Pakis smell of curry is the same to them but we smell of sour milk. Being one of the few groups able to drink milk it becomes our defining smell to foreigners who aren't lactose tolerate after childhood like we are.

Most older British style houses in Australia have mud rooms to take off your outside clothes/shoes. Go through first door, take off shoes and coat, go through next set of doors into the main house.

Depends. Shoes on in the house is fine as long as it's your house and your shoes are clean unless it's moppable floor then slightly dirty is fine. If it's not your house then ask. We have exactly what you describe here but it's called a porch.

I take my shoes off in my own home. Anywhere else I ask first, even when I know the answer's going to be yes (family and friends). Sometimes I don't ask at all because I'll keep them on (strangers, acquaintances, or during only short visits) but if asked to I will.

I know one person who has one those entry-way things and a shoe rack.

I think what the chap in the post was doing (and it's not indicative of all Americans) was trying to associate primarily American cultural practices as being archetypally Anglo in much the same way they'll try and argue their accents and version of English are closer to Shakespeare than the modern UK. or having the gall to claim apple pie as theirs. Acknowledging the lineage legitimises their culture and identify, but they also wish to supplant/replace it because of national pride. "England sucks, but we're the true English anyway," or something to that effect.

You also see another variance of this in some who prefer to ignore they're Anglo at all because they find the English cringe and double down on being German or something.

I'm not sure if you see similar behaviours in Australia, New Zealand or Canada.

I'm reminded of the air conditioner thing that you see come up every single year without fail. Looking it up provides an immediate answer and it's usually wrong. We get little sunlight, it's cold most of the year, and so we don't sweat a shit ton. You should be able to logically conclude why most people aren't showering twice a day, unless presentation is an absolute must or something.

One I heard that I'm not shy to admit pissed me off to an irrational degree when I heard it was Baltics having this idea that Western Europeans (UK included) wash their plates by dropping them in hot soapy water, picking them out, and then just leaving them as-is on the drying rack without rinsing them off or scraping away whatever bits of food are stuck to it.

They do everything in their power, yes, but they do it poorly and ineffectively as has been established throughout the years. There's a tide coming, Keir's already indulging in the little waves, what with his tacit statements of support for the flag raising operations, all it takes is one Paki getting uppity (there's already been an incident of them throwing a petrol bomb at flag-raisers, to which they responded by returning en masse in a group to raise even more flags) to escalate the situation.

There are no prisons left, our economy is in shambles, everything is being stretched to the breaking point, it literally cannot continue like this.

You do get people who are psychotic about demanding you remove them. That’s a sign that they’re weird and you don’t visit them again.

They did a big swoop before the Carnival this year and snagged over a hundred doctors and architects prior to the event. They do this every year, but the Met devoted more resources to it this time around.

Is anyone in the thread calling it out explicitly for being an op? I didn't read too far into the comments. Also, on mumsnet where do you see the stickers to know whether you agree with what the person said or if they're a jew?
