A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

I’m back visiting family and at a BBQ every guy I spoke to had started boxing again for “fitness” reasons. Took the shine off me back being down to my fighting weight. I did get to chat autisticly about punching things a lot.

Perhaps it depends on how online you are. I don't use any social media whatsoever so I won't be found there. If they want to find out who I am they will need to take my picture to my town and ask around.

Even if they did find my employer, I work in a "hands on" job that needs various expertise to do that they will really struggle to find a replacement for. Not that nobody can do it, it's just everyone wants to sit at a desk nowadays rather than use all those STEM qualifications for anything practical. All the experienced people have retired or fucked off elsewhere so it's really hard to get that practical knowledge now. Sacking me for standing in the vicinity of a protest, with the risk of me then causing problems with unfair dismissal proceedings and the fact they have now just lost an employee they will really have a hard time replacing, I don't see it happening.

This is why I'll never take an office drone job. It's all share your linkedin profile, upload your profile picture so everyone knows you, so your chance of getting your life ruined by terminally online faggots skyrockets. You're also doing a job that a remote jeet could do. Badly with many errors, but the companies don't see that.

I dunno if he's one of them vantablack types, one of the "Hasn't been unlocked in the character select" looking fellows. But he is a bit twitchy for sure. Also very horny. I've mentioned before that I just don't think the government has the people or the bandwidth the properly survey us all constantly. I have experience in this, and experience in the government poking around. If they do put the eye of sauron on you, they can dig pretty fucking deep; but they have to actually be looking before they'll bother. I don't think however, that it's particularly unreasonable to recognise that we unironically live in a police state. I'm not going to begrudge someone when they go "I am concerned that the provably evil government will ruin my life."

Hundreds of far right demonstrators faced off against counter-protesters amid tense scenes in Manchester city centre today.

Around 600 people joined the Britain First-organised rally, which gathered outside Piccadilly Station, with a large police presence also at the scene. Flares were lit and Union Jack flags were waved, as the crowd chanted in support of far right activist Tommy Robinson as they marched to St Peter's Square.

There they were met by around 400 counter-protesters, being led by Stand Up to Racism. The two groups were kept apart on either side of the tram tracks by a line of police officers.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: "We respect and facilitate the right to lawful protest.

"As ever, appropriate plans will be put in place with the organisers and local partners to minimise disruption for those who live, work, and visit our city centre."

But yeah, Britain First did good with this. I don't believe for an instant they were met with 400 counter-protestors. All the gay obscured and close-up shots of the pro-immigrant lot doesn't give the impression of a strong counter-movement to the otherwise growing "far-right". Gaz looks happy, the number of flag-wavers was high, and the overhead shot of that column boxed in my police was pretty good. Here's to the next one.

London mothers wearing pink decided to protest the Canary Wharf hotel. Saying it was the wrong place to integrate illegals and they should be moved else where (lol). Complaining people had their hotel bookings cancelled to house them and the area might lose money! 30 random masked men turned up and tried to rush the hotel and ran away when it failed.

Something doesn't smell right about this.

For going to a protest? A protest which an increasing number of employers in this country will support themselves? I've not said to anybody to go full Guy Fawkes here. But I also say that you can't be so afraid that you do nothing, not even speak up. You're a boxer, right? If you want to beat your opponent you're going to take a few blows. Most of them aren't really going to hurt that bad, you've just got to make sure nothing solid connects. If people are afraid of somebody saying to their boss "So and so was at that protest" then they're not going to change anything.

There's leaving yourself wide open and then there's not getting in the ring at all. Most of these protests have been so peaceful that the police have had to literally ferry in counter-protestors themselves to cause enough trouble to arrest people.
