A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

An earlier election might be better for a possible labour-tory-lib dem coalition perhaps. They might still have enough to do it but might be a wipe out in 4 year time for labour.

tbh, that could work well in that it could kill off all three parties if it goes completely to shit and all of their remaining supporter abandon them. It would also give Rupert lowe a chance to get something set up for the elections afterwards.

Yes, that's what I said in my post before this one. Why is it every time I point out something that the tories are doing I get a response like this but all the posts criticising Labour don't? I don't need to criticise Labour equally because you are all already doing it. Which is fine just stop uncritically repeating headlines from the daily mail, they're spin and not the truth.

@Mound Dweller yes they do, particularly along community lines, and she's Yoruba tribe which she's repeatedly talked about, which is 50 million people across Africa and about 1 in 5 of Nigerians. The Yoruba were also the original tribe to start trading slaves with the europeans and americans, so they're also one of the wealthiest groups there (most likely to immigrate in times of trouble, which Nigeria is, and can afford to immigrate) and also a lot of the diaspora black populations identify with them here and in the US. The Yoruba were the evil empire in that Viola Davis film, the Woman King, but actually the Dahomey tribe (the good guys rescuing the slaves) were the second tribe to start trading slaves.

The following is all assumption:

The date for the Disability vote is next Tuesday therefore, if the vote fails to pass, a VONC in Starmer will follow shortly after. However, Parliament goes into recess on July 22nd and therefore there might not be enough time before summer to get a vote through.

IF Starmer presses the nuke button, then either Thursday 4th September or Thursday 11th September are the most likely dates, depending on how far in advance he calls the GE (in 2017, Theresa May called the GE on April 18th with the actual GE date on June 8th - therefore allowing more than the mandatory five weeks for Purdah). Technically he can call for an August GE but it would be more advisable to wait until September and call for one on Monday 21st July and as there's no longer 'Fixed Terms' he has that flexibility (as did Boris in 2019 and Rishi in 2024).

A LibLabCon coalition of crap would be nuked - Nigel would be PM and the opposition would be a mix of Independents, Plaid, Greens and SNP. Denayer might end up as LOTO, but she'd be a total joke in this position as she admits she has a gas boiler whilst demanding everybody have a heat pump.

Youth Demand, Just Stop Oil - all the useless (or useful) idiots are returning which tells me that something is up. A distract or another 'incident' to try and win some support for Starmer or perhaps even a 'Black Swan' event.

I am no fan of the Irish trio, but I hope that Kneecap embarrass Starmer in Somerset on Saturday.
