A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Familiar. I got nothing, they SAID I should have paracetamol and they wrote it down and assured me it’d happen and then they fucked off, leaving me in some discomfort, to put it mildly, and they never came back except to shout at someone for something or roll their eyes. So no painkillers at all, nothing whatsoever. When I asked I got the eye rolling, and then they’d fuck off again and not bring anything. There’s a lot more to it than that, which I shan’t go into because I can barely think of it without wincing, but the sliced abdomen wasn’t the worst thing, and no1curr anyway, and I’d happily seal the entire staff in and blast the entire unit into the black hole at the centre of the galaxy. They can roll their fucking eyes and be on their phones as the gravitational pull shreds them to atoms.

In most euro countries, you get your own basic but clean room, with your own toilet (shared but scrupulously clean showers down the hall) and your husband or whoever is with you gets a bed in with you and he’s supposed to bring you the baby and all that, on his mandatory week or two of parental leave post birth.

You're making a lot of assumptions in saying that it is shocking that she was the only one chasing him. We don't know the circumstances of the dispatching information and availability of officers at the time to determine anything about the actions or inaction of other officers. Though I do agree that she ought to get a promotion and raise for such a display of bravery. I would never be a bobby precisely for this reason, there's no way I would willingly sign up to chase knife / sword wielding maniacs armed only with CS spray, a baton, and a stab vest. In other words, look at the size of the balls on that lass.
 
Marks and Spencers probably don't have anything up because of the massive cyberattack that they're still getting fucked by. They're not going to get anything back by September at the earliest because they offloaded their entire IT support team to India and now they're absolutely fucked when they need IT specialists who actually know what the fuck they're doing.

Oh by the way they admitted that customer details and credit card information was hacked (but encrypted they say) so I'd strongly suggest everyone who has ever shopped there changes their bank card between Easter weekend and today changes it ASAP.

It has been VERY interesting to see faggot fatigue come into play. It used to be something that they'd put up knowing that 90% of the public would be fairly open towards it and fuck the 10% because they're not real people. NOW? Some places are finally waking up to the point where they might have to go back to being vaguely politically neutral.

After police arrived, the defendant approached them brandishing the sword, the court heard.

In body camera footage played to the jury, police are seen repeatedly shouting at him to drop his sword as they called for backup.

One officer, PC Yasmin Mechen-Whitfield, chased the defendant through a series of alleyways through residential properties, the court heard.

It's a nice idea, but cops who do stuff like actually chase down knoife wielders or bumrush shotgun wielding armed robbers never ever get anything of substance, as many a constable's wall full of hollow commendations will attest, and never will they get anything more because it's promoting the sort of "actually doing their jobs" stuff the bosses don't actually want.

What did I say about soft targets? Police LOVE situations like this because they don't have to lift a finger restraining them and can be back to the station to police big Baz on twitter within 15 minutes.

I've personally witnessed absolutely hilarious scenes on nights out where multiple policemen are putting their bodyweight on some coked up shithead who is on the ground trying to fight them off.

Gone are the days where two bobbies would be enough to completely push some smackheads shit in, now every fucking minor incident requires about 10 police officers because A) Nobody is fit enough to restrain someone and B) they can't punch or kick people anymore so have to do that retarded 'shoving' thing they do.

It's worth bearing in mind that officers are also afraid to use force, as any use which picks up enough media attention or looks bad optically, regardless of its reasonableness in the circumstances, could lead to conviction. Though the police, through their unions and contractual guarantees, will be given paid leave during the investigation process, it's still a very lengthy process which can cause a lot of emotional distress, as first they will be suspended pending an investigation by an independent body, then if they are to be charged, they will likely be waiting up to two or three years until a crown court trial. Even if they are found not guilty at trial, the police force will then conduct an internal investigation into the matter, and the officer may lose their job regardless.

This process can ruin people, and I have witnessed firsthand the impact that this has on an individual and his family. It's fucked, and if it were me I would be shit scared to use any force too, as I wouldn't want to lose my job or have years of my life run through a shitty bureacratic machine that wants to ruin you.

an IQ of 53 (ish) !!!! Jesus wept. Couldn't they have just left him outside in the rain and let nature take its course ?

Yes I know asylums had issues, but the closure of long term care placements has been a disaster. This lad will never, ever function in or be safe in society. He needs a secure highly supervised residential place
