A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

This was entertaining to watch, thoughts?
Alastair Campbell is doing ad reads now? Its tough out there boys. We're this close to him pimping Raid: Shadow Legends.

I couldn't stomach anything past the immigration coping segment. Campbell is one of the worst bitter ex-wives of politics and Gollum is a non-entity. He's some kind of Thalidomide version of Lee Evans.

21 year old Roman Slavaukrainyvich has been arrested for setting the fires on Queer Starmer's houses and car.

He must be some kind of pro-russian, right-wing* nationalist, who has been living in the UK for three generations, there's no way he can be an immigrant, diversity is our strength.

*Edited because I'm a mong and can't multitask

I saw the story but lost badly at 'guess the race and nationality'.

I am the shooked - a UKRAINIAN! Ukraine people should be worshipping Starmer surely?

I cannot believe multiple people fell for that surname.

Edit - article archive so we've got that
A 21-year-old man was charged Thursday with three counts of arson for fires that targeted two properties and a car linked to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The Metropolitan Police force said Roman Lavrynovych, who was arrested Tuesday, was charged with arson with intent to endanger life.

The charges are linked to three incidents over the past week - a car fire on May 8, a fire Monday at Starmer’s private home that damaged the door of the house, and a fire Sunday outside a north London house converted into apartments connected to the U.K. leader. No injuries were reported from any of the fires.

Lavrynovych, a Ukrainian national, is due to appear in court on Friday. After he was arrested, Lavrynovych has remained in custody after warrants of further detention were obtained, the police said in a statement.

Starmer moved with his family to the prime minister’s official Downing Street residence after taking office in July.

The investigation was led by counterterrorism detectives as it involves the prime minister. Authorities are also probing whether there was state involvement as well as looking at other potential motivations.

Earlier this week, Starmer said the recent arson attacks represented “an attack on all of us, on democracy and the values that we stand for.”

The attacks were condemned by leaders across the House of Commons, including by the Conservative Party’s Kemi Badenoch, who described them as “completely unacceptable.”

Starmer’s former house has attracted protesters in the past. Last year, three pro-Palestinian activists were arrested and charged with public order offenses after unfurling a banner covered in red handprints outside the building.

I know that we haven't actually 'won' anything yet until shit actually happens, but the Overton window flying to the right this week has just been beautiful to witness. The best thing about it is how once you open Pandora's Box and say that immigration = bad, you can't really go back. Better yet, the normies of the UK have just gone along with Dear Leader too because you have to support Labour's stances on things unless you're not a real Labour supporter, right?

All it took was a bunch of Reform councilors winning seats and threatening to refuse immigrant hotels and the whole thing falls apart. If they legally CAN refuse to house immigrants in their counties then Labour and the Tories are absolutely fucking dead and that's probably why Starmer hit the nuke button so quickly, post elections.

I think the only thing that could make this funnier is if European Leaders organise a meeting to discuss problematic Britain's lurch to the right, followed by Germans, Dutch, French etc. citizens essentially going "Well fuck you" and really kicking off.

If what happened with the prime minister and the murder of the other MP'S tells the public is how vulnerable our elected officials actually are.
Absolutely and they need to remember that those charged with protecting them are members of the electorate and wider society and they're just as vulnerable to suffering as a result of the batshit insane policies of Government as anyone else.

These people might be charged with protecting our leaders but they're just as susceptible to despising those they protect as anyone else. All it would take is an honest mistake, Guvnor for protection to lapse and the worst (or best depending on how you see it) happening

Landing point to to carry out the invasion into the rest of France and restore the dual monarchy. The biggers (boat niggers) will keep coming unless we push all the way down to the Mediterranean, at which point we can start lobbing artillery in the general direction of Libya and Algeria to deter them. Once the French know our intent they'll invite us to rule a la Mary the 2nd and William the 3rd and the affair will be bloodless. Keir's got a plan — trust.
Okay, but step one still involves sharing a country with the French, which we all know is a bad idea since Frogs are barely one step up from the Africans. Unless you're planning on treating them as the subhumans they are its a shit plan that leaves you worse off than you are now.

It could be one of the weird Ukrainians who think they’re Russian. I’ve worked with one or two years ago. They’re like regular Ukrainians but came here before the war to work and are all high functioning alcoholics.

Similar to how there are Russians who are "pro-West," there are many Ukrainians who are pro-Russia due to disinformation and the Russian propaganda machine, however, you could debate it's vice versa too.

It's actually mad how much the council elections rattled both labour and conservatives.
Not sure about the choice of font mind.

That's the second time in a week that I've had to check if a political party had been hacked.

What an astonishing turnaround. Despite this being empty rhetoric from the tories, the genie is well and truly out of the bottle now and the genie clearly hates foreigners.

Excited to see where it goes next, even if it's just to see people like James O'Brien and Emily Mentalist on the cross.

Won't essay post on this (on break, from work and essay posting) but there's grounds for holding both sentiments that don't rely on 'misinfo' and 'propaganda'.

For Russians, their slap fighting with the west affects their economy to a severe degree and forces them into a friendship-through-circumstance with China who, as the USSR, they stopped being friendly with after the 1960s and are forced to trade away away resources that'd sell for a premium in Western markets to China who just sends them tat in return and India who is too far away, too opposed to China, and too friendly with the West to be cemented as an ally. Instead of being an economic powerhouse their forced sequestering with a few disparate states in central Asia and China have eroded them into a non-threat whose danger relies on Western media, an image that becomes harder to maintain with their difficulty in Ukraine. Time and apparent hypocrisy from the West have cemented the anti-Western sentiments. For instance, Russia being barred from NATO in the 90s and becoming hostile to the West again was due to the 1st Chechen war, which would be mirrored less than a decade later by America's intervention in Afghanistan following 9/11 (two states going through unrest with the threat of being controlled by a vehemently anti-Western, heavily Islamic government that is (supposedly) responsible for acts of terrorism in your country.) Being pro-Western is also unpopular for being synonymous with liberalism and Leftism so it's already potentially ostracised from the other half of the population.

For Ukrainians, ignoring energy dependence on Russia, the risk of Russian invasion, and any sentiments emerging as a result of fear and propaganda, Ukraine elected a pro-Russian government in 2012 and two years later got the Euromaidan/Maidan uprising. Arguing from a Pro-Russian perspective, the groups that composed the movement were also receiving a significant chunk of funds from the USA through entities like USAID and the uprising was focused in the Western half of Ukraine but mostly Kiev. This can be viewed as Western subversion of a legitimate democracy and unjust. The subsequent uprisings in the East can just as easily be attributed to half the country having their wishes ignored by the other half through violent action as it could to Russian fire-stoking and provocation, which is what the West blamed it on and what Wikipedia still calls the war in Donbass (calling it a 'counter-revolution' would help make it contentious I think). Though just like pro-Western sentiments in Russia, pro-Russian sentiments would probably take a deep hit following the annexation of Crimea and the subsequent full-on war (though to Russia it's just another intervention on the same wavelength as the Chechen war).

It's actually mad how much the council elections rattled both labour and conservatives.

A single shitty PowerPoint slide is actually the best way they could've done this.
1. The ease at which they revealed this view undercuts Farage's reluctance to say it themselves.
2. The fact it wasn't a big, boisterous announcement - like they're brave for saying it - helps to cement it as something that's just common sense.
3. It's a bit funny (they should've just tweeted out the statement, "every single one" is redundant since it should be covered by "all")
4. Having Badenoch say it wouldn't have meant as much.

Still not voting for them though, or Labour. Incentivised self-deportation, restrictions on other pathways to entry and citizenship, implementing policies to make it harder to practice Islam (non-religious slaughter, niqab ban) and echoing the one thing that's fizzled into the background that is still being offered by Reform (free speech protections) before any other party becomes worth listening to. Conservatives and Labour escalating their rhetoric will help in forcing Reform to escalate theirs to not lose relevancy, so that's a positive to come out of this regardless.
