A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The crossbow fella from the Otley Run, in Leeds, has died due to a self inflicted wound. Some are reporting it was a shotgun blast to the face, but no shotgun was recovered, so who knows.

INB4 it's blamed on misogyny.

BBC article

A man suspected of carrying out an attack involving a crossbow which left two women injured in Leeds has died, police have said.

Owen Lawrence, 38, was arrested and taken to hospital with a self-inflicted injury following the assault on the popular Otley Run pub crawl in Headingley on Saturday.

Counter Terrorism Policing North East (CTPNE) said it was believed that Mr Lawrence, from Headingley, was acting on his own and they were not currently seeking anyone else.

Two women, aged 19 and 31, were taken to hospital for treatment following the attack, with one later being discharged.

I just said I thought there was some opportunity to spread some good news, that's it. We don't have to be fucking miserable all the time.
We found out peanut allergies can be lessened in adults with increasing amounts over time, perhaps to the point of complete tolerance, and the Japs might be able to regrow teeth by 2030 as human trials started in March — not much else is happening otherwise, politically speaking, in the UK. Maybe the result of the elections on May 1st might give something to be optimistic about (at least in generalising where people's overall attitudes are) but for the time being things have slowed to a dawdle.

Weather's nice though. Go sit outside, or spend some time away from the farms and social media and do something else.

Anyway, apologies for the non-contributing blog post but just wanted to say it's good to be back Brit kiwis.
Welcome back. Get thee to a Greggs.

He had information that would lead to the arrest of Hilary Clinton.

He's unironically a big asset. I love hearing about what is going on in bongland. Doing the Lord's work even if he is sadly British.
Many thanks for the vote of confidence!

A couple of news items from GB News ticker:

* A desperate attempt to stop Reform UK winning in the Council Elections and in Runcorn & Helsby hasn't dampered the form of the party who now go six points clear of the Tories with two days until polling day.

* Karen Shore (Labour's PPC in Runcorn & Helsby) has door slammed in her face by Green Party voter who declares 'I can't stand Starmer!'

* Tony Blair admits that Net Zero is 'doomed to fail' - yet more problems/divides in the Labour party?

* Starmer rejects calls to recognise Palestinian State within the next few months - this will piss off the Free Palestine mob yet again.

I have to admit, beef stew with mash and dumplings is peak winter food. You have to create a reduction for the gravy, though, using a red wine. This will seem random but what in the ever loving fuck is with the supermarkets FIFO lately. Finding salad stuff that lasts til the 3rd of May is a mission.

Also, Kiwi Farms and Mums Net are oddly similar in politics.

Classic Irish dish of Champ; boil some meat (traditionally lamb), cabbage and whatever leafy greens you can get in a slow cooker, include the bones. When it's done, chuck it in a bowl of mash spuds. Great for when you've been in the garden all day in winter.
