A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Thanks for the correction. I didn't want to look up the details again - once was horrifying enough. It's not theoretically impossible that he could have not known what his father was doing but I find it wildly unlikely. It's not like their house was some sprawling multi-winged mansion. It was right above him and the poor little girl was kept there for some time. And also, you look at Aimee Challenor and everything about him says sexual abuse in one way or another.

It was insane that the Greens gave him positions of power and allowed him to appoint his father to a position too. That the Lib Dems took him in after even the Greens kicked him out is insanity.

See, I posted about the Kier affair rumours 2 weeks ago, I am surprised it took so long to come out more mainstream. The love child is a very old rumour that has resurfaced. I suspect the Westminster journalists who were on the payroll are being outbid by various other people. I think it is a mixture of things, a general malaise with Labour and the establishment seeking to oust Starmer.

Starmer, like any other psychopath, does not care about gender; it is only power and dominance.

I am not going to lie, I am hyped a ton of shit is being dredged but an extract from the book Get In really irked me. Starmer does not believe in ideals, but he wants the establishment to be unchanging and constant. He wants what he is installing to be perpetual which is fucking deranged. It's an interesting read. Challenor is what first brought me to lurk this website all those years ago.

I'm finally byaaack in the UK after a whole year abroad. And I've got to admit, despite all the problems over here, my initial reaction is that I'm so happy to be back.

Firstly, this country is so quiet compared to other countries - travelling around, you find that this is not the standard, especially compared to SE Asia. Other countries have barking dogs, music, 24 traffic, and if you're especially unlucky that Islamic call to prayer. Last night I could've heard a pin drop.

Secondly, the food. Everyone mocks British grub but my god is it a relief after a year of foreign muck. We're at my mum's for a few nights and last night after we arrived off the plane she served us baked salmon. Marinated in? Glazed with? In a sauce of? NOTHING. Fucking nothing. And you know what? Good! There's no need for it! Good salmon tastes good already. There was maybe a sprig of dill on there but a couldn't swear by it. The side was boiled new potatoes, again, with no sauce. Just salt and butter. My god how glad I was to have some simple non-spicy food.

Finally, the weather is gorgeous in the UK right now. Not sleeping with a fan or AC blaring away all night? Getting fucking cozy under the blanket, instead of sweating? I'd forgotten how nice that is. Also, can't wait for the bank holiday this weekend, you'd better believe I'm hitting a beer garden or two.
