A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

One of the most damaging lies we’ve told ourselves as a country is the “they’re doing the jobs no one wants to do.”
True enough. When I was young, I worked in a meat packing plant out somewhere east of Manchester. The people working there mostly came from an estate nearby and were exactly the sort of gobshites you'd expect to live in a place like that (and I mean this with as much love as I can muster, which I confess isn't as much as I'd like). Everyone from kids working summer jobs, to old fellas who had been there since the place was built, all working hard for low but liveable wages. All gone now. Around the turn of the century they started beinging in more immigrants. Not poles or whatever, because they had the sense to demand respectable wages. It was pakis and north Africans, who suppressed wages merely by their presence, because they wouldn't get on your case if they didn't get the yearly raise. The locals were quickly priced out. The summer jobs disappeared, replaced by a constant churn of paki agency workers. All the old fellas retired or quit when they found themselves surrounded by foreigners.

The locals wanted those jobs, but the jobs weren't there any more. Now their kids are dependent on handouts.

If I remember correctly, during COVID it was being very widely reported that a lot of native people were getting rejected over and over from farm jobs to pick fruit and vegetables. All whilst the very same places were complaining that they just couldn't find anyone who was native to work there and that they needed their precious immigrants back (mixed in with some Brexit rhetoric).

It's not so much people don't want to do these jobs as much as it is these jobs are not worth peoples time. Foreign labour has under cut these jobs so badly that now it isn't worth doing unless you're some Baltic who came here in a shipping container and these farmers seem very happy to keep it that way by not hiring the natives who would want to do these jobs.

Too many people don't want to hear it. They're caught up in the biff bam political games. My side good, your side bad! They'll happily echo the idea that labour are bringing in endless migrants to get guaranteed voters and so on, but to even suggest that the tories are equally incentivised gets you either sputtering rage, a blank bovine stare, or a sneering dismissal.

I remember these stories quite well. There was a woman who lived near the farm she applied to work at as a fruit picker only to be told she would have to live on site over the season and the owner would be charging them utilities for the privilege.

The government taxes businesses out the arse; and the cost of living is so high, that the reality is that most of our places of work that employ foreign scab labour cannot afford the cost of running. If you can't afford to pay your workers more than it costs them to exist, then you can't afford to run your business and you're relying on government handouts. That's all that mass migration for economic reasons is, government handouts to businesses, that can't afford to run, typically because of shitty government decisions.

We should cannibalise politicians is what I'm saying.

I’m old enough to remember when fruit picking was a student job. Would didn’t get much but the farmer paid for your food, lodging, and a ton of booze at the weekend, so you would end the summer with a nice bit of cash saved.

A mate’s bother loved doing it.

A Lib Dem suggestion I agree with? Quick, bring me my fainting couch!
I agree people playing music on public transport is annoying and I agree with stopping it. But I'm not sure this law accomplishes anything positive. There are already fines for this behaviour and £1,000 is a LOT of money for most people who engage in it. If they're not dissuaded by a £100 fine, they wont be dissuaded by a £1,000 fine because they're already not thinking of consequences. And honestly, being fined a grand for being annoying on a bus strikes me as excessive. And it's not because I like this behaviour, it's because stupid high fines don't accomplish anything other than breeding more anger. Imagine you've been working your McDonald's job for six months and have managed to save £1,000 and then it's gone for playing some music on a bus. How fucked off would you be? £50 means your plans for the weekend or that game you wanted to buy are scuppered. That's enough to get a message through that next time you don't go blaring out your music. A grand? That's excessive. Just enforce the existing rules.

All bark but no bite. No matter how high they make the fine they'll never fucking enforce it, just a way to try but fail to scare people.

Students have enough from their loans now to get them through the holidays and to pay for nights out. Social life is as much a competitive market as anything else so what are you going to do when everyone you know has cash without work? You going to miss out on hanging out with others all day? Your partner will be there without you. You'll be left out of everything that happens because you're working. Are you going to trade that in for a lower repayment half a decade from now? If you even can - student loans inject so much cash into the student system that you could work all week and it would be a fairly small proportion of how much money people are getting from loans.

All bark but no bite. No matter how high they make the fine they'll never fucking enforce it, just a way to try but fail to scare people.
Pretty much - the system is filled with politicians slapping on giant penalties - fines or prison sentences because they think "x didn't dissuade people, so 10x will". It barely has an effect because the reason x didn't work isn't because people don't care about x. It's because either x was never applied or people don't think it will happen.

Before saying something doesn't work, you should try actually doing that something. And existing fines are rarely enforced.

Making wog mating calls illegal will have all the effectiveness of banning fly tipping, means totally nothing because the authoirtah will continue to... do nothing.
Typical diversion of energies away from solving a problem to merely talking about solving a problem to final stage; we made some paperwork about how we could perhaps possibly maybe in the future hope to potentially solve the problem, somewhat.

Imagine you've been working your McDonald's job for six months and have managed to save £1,000 and then it's gone for playing some music on a bus. How fucked off would you be?
THEN DON'T PLAY MUSIC ON THE FUCKING BUS AND BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER PEOPLE.
All bark but no bite. No matter how high they make the fine they'll never fucking enforce it, just a way to try but fail to scare people.
But entirely this. It isn't about fines or anything like that, it's about a massive shift in the culture over the last 30 years. It is part of white British culture that you understand being outside on public land, it's not your property and you aren't free to do as you like. You have to be considerate of others - by that I mean not just being annoying and making noise, but not disturbing others, leaving the place in the condition you found it ( i.e. take your fucking rubbish home with you or putting it in a bin ) and controlling your children and animals ( and tidying up after them ).
The cultures we have imported have no understanding of this whatsoever. They make as much noise as they like, eat stinking food and stink themselves in public, throw their rubbish everywhere and think they have done nothing wrong. They can't conceptualise that public space is there for everyone and therefore everyone has a responsibility to maintain it, they see it as something to use as they see fit with no consequences, as "nobody" or the State owns it.
All of this about noise pollution is just that, just another form of pollution, whilst not on the same scale as fly tipping, it still shows a massive lack of consideration for others. Let's be honest, the reason why most of us say nothing when people are being inconsiderate is because we fear further cultural enrichment from a sharp bladed object.

The get out of jail free card with these civil offences on transport is by saying you have no fixed abode. Same with those environmental enforcement officers you get in city centres. Anyone the law actually targets knows this so it only ends up being those occasional/one time offenders who see punishment while the repeat offenders get away with it.

The British far-right is quite an interesting rabbit hole to go down. At first it looks like there's this vast and scary network, then you realise it's just the same dozen guys falling out over gay drama and constantly starting new groups.

Since the only people who really write about it are ex-police, journalists, and left-wing activists, any history them is really overblown and makes them look big and important. 5 guys will meet up in a pub twenty years ago, form a group, then fall out because one ordered a pint of Guinness, then never speak ago, and there will be articles talking about them like they are still a vast army only held at bay by the brave actions of anti-fascist activists.

Just be careful what links you click if you do go down it one day.

An example is Combat 18. A supposed deadly terrorist network with links to loyalist paramilitary groups and an international neo-Nazi network, when it was just a bunch of bored Chelsea fans and a Special Branch handler talking to his German police equivalent and a bunch of their bored hooligans. They had a fucking website, for gods sake. What sort of clandestine terror network has something that whois.com will identify a senior member of?

The British far-left is kinda the same but there's much more rape.
Ngl the far right in the UK just depresses me. Like i was thinking of getting involved in like some capacity at one point but it just comes off as a bunch of posers, grifters and grasses falling out over retarded bollocks. The Recent Homeland drama best displays this.

Looks like retard Rachel needs to read up on the Laffer Curve. This woman is beyond incompetent. I did see some rumblings that Rayner has threatened to quit, which is interesting.

I am just waiting for Thursday. At first, I think there is a lot of voter apathy, but people hate Labour a lot, so it's a toss-up.

It's going to be warm and sunny for 2 weeks now, it seems. It would be an awful shame if something were to happen.

Apparently Kier Starmer is cheating on his wife with, and may Allah forgive me for saying this, a woman. That surprised me too. Sorry, but Lord Ali shippers BTFO.

He's supposedly still banging Maya Sikand.
