A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I'll take religion of peace for all three.
Notting Hill carnival one it's more likely to have a critical mass and something go wrong. Once a sufficiently big enough mass starts panicking that will cause enough deaths on its own.

I am absolutely loving the otter-monarch memes. Quality stuff. All Hail Queen Otterly!

I don't think even the wean knows if this was a consensual encounter, and god help me I'm trying not to think too hard about it.

I have put the entire thing in the hands of her social worker. This is beyond me. No, no one is going to assist the police investigation. Fear of community reprisals, obviously.

The social worker is taking her to the Sandyford next week for termination. Natalie won't go. I had to go and sit there with her mother when we were thirteen. I'll not be the one who takes another child there. Natalie consented to the retention of the products of conception, so there's evidence he fucking raped a child, but well, as her social worker says "this happens all the time".

I am so full of anger and grief that this has happened to the poor wean and I don't even know where to start trying to make sense of it. I have a drink and a broken heart. No one should have to grow up like this. How is this a future.
At least she wasn't late on.

When I lived in Glasgow and lost a baby post my FAS at 20 weeks I was shunted off to London on my own to have a two stage abortion. I could not have gone through labour to birth a child which would never draw breath. Maybe it makes me weak maybe I'm wrong but I just couldn't.

Ironically this was same year the SNP led Government released the WELTOP Scotland report. I'd say I hope things are better now but given the shit attitude of the social worker you experienced I would wage Scotland still despises women and girls just as much.

If a quarter of the violence and disorder happened spread across the country one Saturday before Premier League games there would be calls in parliament to have it banned.

Other festivals across the country have been closed down that were pretty safe due to councils not wanting to pay for policing.

How the fuck is this event still happening and growing? Cancel it or force them to have it in a field somewhere away from civilisation and pay for it themselves.

What would the political fallout be? Professional blacks complaining in the Guardian once a year? How is the establishment so spineless?

How is the establishment so spineless?
They're following their orders from Davos, just like they and their predecessors have done for decades. It's not about spine or lack of. They were summoned, given their orders, promised their families would be protected when whatever they're planning kicks off, and they're keeping their end of the bargain.

I honestly don't know how much clearer it needs to be made to people and you can't force people to see what is right in front of them.

She’s 13, the answer is no. Why is the community not ‘having a word’ with the man responsible? Local big man is he?
What is it @Otterly always says, there but for the grace of God. This shit feels like some horrible eternal cycle.
Poor child. It’s a cycle that can be broken, but it takes a specific type of person, and some luck, and a lot of work to do it, and it’s not always breakable in one, or even two or three generations.
My heart goes out to her. What can you say?

Sad news, the days may be numbered for my collection of "enforcement actions" under the sink:

The culture secretary has said the BBC's licence fee is "unenforceable" and insisted "no options are off the table" when the government begins a review into the corporation's current funding model later this year.
In an interview with the Telegraph, Lisa Nandy said there were "problems" with the annual charge, with "fewer and fewer people" paying the £174.50 fee.
The charter, which expires in 2027 and is under review, is an agreement between the BBC and the government that sets out the terms and purposes of the corporation - including the existence of the licence fee.
A BBC spokeswoman said the broadcaster looks forward to engaging with the government and securing the long-term future of the BBC.
Nandy has already started negotiations with the BBC about the corporation's funding.
It currently gets most of its income from the licence fee - in the last financial year, the BBC received £3.7bn, or about two-thirds of its total income, from it.
"We're open to a different system," she told the Telegraph, but admitted no preferred options had been put forward yet.
She added the government wanted the public's input in shaping the new model to create "a fairer, more sustainable system".
According to the BBC, 80% of households currently pay the licence fee.
Nandy also said she had been "very concerned" about the way the fee had been enforced in the past as it had been found to disproportionately target women.
Two BBC reviews found the gender disparity had been due to societal factors.
The review in 2017 detailed a gender skew towards women-only households, a greater likelihood of women answering the door to TV Licensing Enquiry Officers and a higher chance of them engaging positively with an officer.
In 2023, the BBC set out plans to reduce the high proportion of women being prosecuted for licence fee evasion, after figures showed that they made up 76% of the 52,376 people convicted over it in 2020.
Nandy has previously said the charge was "deeply regressive" and that she was thinking "quite radically and creatively" about alternatives. But the minister has ruled out using general taxation to fund the BBC.
She did, however, keep open the possibility of a subscription model.
Last month in a Sunday Times interview, the corporation's chairman suggested wealthier households could be charged more.
A BBC spokeswoman said: "The public cares about the BBC and we have launched our biggest ever public engagement exercise, so audiences can help drive and shape what they want from a universal and independent BBC in the future.
"We want to continue to reform and evolve and look forward to engaging with government on the next Charter and securing the long-term future of the BBC."
Doesn't she looked tired?

Her smile and optimism; forced.
They're all suffering a bit really, gone are the halcyon days of opposition.

The cUK guberment is preparing for it's Summer of Love, except this time it won't be niggers looting Nike's it will be Chav's rioting and burning down every Police Station and Government building in site.

The MET has increased it's prison cell number by over 1000 by renovation some existing cells and building "temporally" holding facilities since last October (2024) reports said.

I guess they're expecting the ball to drop pretty soon. I wonder what the trigger will be and if the Bobby's really think they have a chance against a horde of pumped up Chav's and Wankers coming at them. They're so used to the average Britcuck folding the second the PoPo show up I doubt the riot squad will do much but run away.

I'm old.
I know I'm old because only one other person out of 20 today in Liverpool had heard of Dave Lister (which made it easier for me to ask them to say "Rimmer you're such a smeghead"). Oh and some guy was bowing on his knees to the fab 4 statue/or mecca (roughly)

It will be funny when the people the let out to make space are the same ones burning things down.
Saturday evening. When you're on a training course on a Saturday daytime.

There will be drunkposting and shiptoasting.
Enjoy you beer and wine, bong bros. I'm doing to be dry for a few weeks after over doing it at Easter.

This makes me sad to hear. Dave Lister is a British Icon.

Looks like making the civil service run the country by default was a bad choice. Do ministers have the ability to fire permanent secretaries? Without that you can't even do the mild changes trump is doing.

Yes minister was a warning

Good news everyone! Serco has announced the towns where they will be housing migrants across the UK at the taxpayer's expense. https://archive.ph/v0QlL

Keep your eyes peeled for an influx of doctors and engineers lurking around nearby schools.
