A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I'm sceptical. I think this will be a way to give more protection to trannies as it keeps them distinctly separate from women now.
They have always been distinctly separate from women and have always leveraged that fact to their advantage. Any degree of separation between troons and women that is enshrined in law is something that they will find intolerable (see India's response above), which is enough for me to consider it a good thing.

I suspect nothing will substantially change one way or the other, but part of me hopes that this a small indication of the way the wind is blowing. :optimistic:

If nothing else, you can now say to any MtF you meet "Legally, you are not a woman, as confirmed by the Supreme Court". You couldn't say that yesterday. And I encourage everyone to say it loudly and often, and watch the rest of this farce crumble over the next few years.

Yes, I kkow that the judgment was keen to point out that "ooh this is in no way a lessening of trans rights, and they're still definitely super duper protected as, erm, their own special non-woman category". But! The great thing is that troons don't even want that, and they won't settle for it. So the only thing to happen now is for the whole rotten edifice to come crashing down.

Fill that popcorn bucket.

This is a huge win for trannies, as they can continue to pretend they are being persecuted (whilst actual woman fall victim to the increasing hordes of imported rapists, who the trannies also support. Oddly JKR never talks about this, but its not a white man she can target, so she has no care to give).

Problem is, you're relying on the local plod to play along. And the local plod run the gamut from 'can't be arsed, fuck off son' to 'arresting you immediately for a hate crime now give me access to all your electronic devices and your knicker drawer'. Luckily, the CPS can't be arsed to prosecute all but the tiniest minority of crimes, but the punishment is the process as they say, and you might not want to try your luck.

Especially not if you're in West Yorkshire.

They were going to do that anyway. A troon could be crowned Emperor of the Universe tomorrow and they would still find cause to bitch about persecution. It's all they know and all they have.

With the hate speech laws and the courts specifically saying that trannies are still protected under hate crime/discrimination laws. They even made a point that it wasn't a victory for any group.

I don't trust the modern day UK.

[...] biological woman [...]
As opposed to some other kind of woman? How many different types of "woman" are there? I'll never understand (or trust) people who outline their beliefs using the framework of an ideology which they (claim to) oppose.

It's been a kinda lost in the shuffle given the massive L they took in the Supreme Court, but another tranny got BTFO in court today: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c62znny9gk0o
A trans woman who complained to police about social media posts made by a "gender critical" man has lost a High Court challenge of the force's decision to take no further action against him.

Lynsay Watson complained to Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in February 2023, about more than 15 posts made on X by Stuart Campbell related to the murder of teenager Brianna Ghey, who was also transgender, that month.

Mr Campbell, who was described by his lawyers as "gender critical" or a "biological realist", said Brianna was a "trans-identifying boy", adding: "Human beings can't change sex. Being murdered doesn't alter that."

GMP told Ms Watson in November 2023 that no further action would be taken.
Judge's reasoning:
The judge said: "(GMP) was entitled, and correct, to conclude that posts did not cross the threshold to be considered objectively 'grossly offensive'."

She continued: "The defendant's conclusion properly reflected society's fundamental values of free speech, including the need for tolerance of statements and opinions that some might find offensive or upsetting."

She added: "(GMP) was justified, and right, in concluding that to proceed further with the investigation was not appropriate.

"To have done otherwise would have been an unjustified interference with (Mr Campbell's) freedom of expression."

I was going to say that was surprising, but it was a bloke posting it and GMP only seem to like harassing women.
I suspect that it was some unrelated trans person shrieking on behalf of someone else. Had they personally been being targeted GMP might have played along but I suspect in this case they realised how hard it would be to do anything but lose the argument and the court proved they were right.

Reminds me of an "All Gender" toilet I saw once. All I could think of was a twist on that scene with Bishop Brennan in Father Ted.

"All Genders, Crilley?! What other genders are there??"

"Uh... F-fake genders, your Grace"

I may hate this country and the direction it's heading in but by god do I love how it continues to live up to the name "TERF island"

Amen to that. Though I feel like this decision was left unbastardized sheerly as a means of appeasement; the establishment knows it's not exactly popular at the moment. I'm not dog enough to be pleased by a thrown bone, this should have never come into question in the first place.

My inner tinfoil hatter also wonders if the whole 'Karen' meme a few years ago was a mass astroturf to sabotage white, middle aged and middle classed women's rep whilst they brought this shit in in the first place. Also if allowing the ruling is set up as a distraction for something else nasty going on right now.
