A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Shoes, coffee pods and celebrity cut-outs – these are just some of the things that civil servants have been splashing taxpayers’ cash on with special credit cards.

The so-called Government Procurement Cards (GPCs) are used to cover costs by staff in several departments.

Currently, the maximum spend on hospitality using the cards – typically used by diplomats and people in trade roles – is £2,500.

But the cards – of which there are 20,000 in total – are set to be frozen this week and the maximum spend slashed, as the government tries to cut down on ‘wasteful spending’.

Everyone who uses one of the cards will now have to reapply for them and justify why they need one.

It comes after Foreign Office staff used the system to pay for £2,493 of shoes at a fashionable shop in Barbados and £2,479 at online shop DJ Superstore.

Foreign Office staff also spent £673 on a website that sells cardboard cutouts of celebrities such as Harry Styles and the Spice Girls, the Mail reported.

Between July and October last year, the Foreign Office bought £49,511 worth of beer, wine and spirits at venues across the world.

At the Cabinet Office, staff spent £742 on Nespresso coffee pods last November and £531 the month before.

Yesterday, the government announced almost all GPCs will be frozen this week and cardholders will be asked to reapply and justify they actually need them.

The Cabinet Office said the move was expected to cut the number of cards in circulation by around half.

Meanwhile, the maximum spend will be cut from £2,500 to £500 – and any spending above that will require approval.

Cabinet Office minister Pat Mcfadden said the move would ‘ensure taxpayers’ money is spent on improving the lives of working people’.

He added: ‘It’s not right that hundreds of millions of pounds are spent on government credit cards each year, without high levels of scrutiny or challenge. Only officials for whom it is absolutely essential should have a card.

‘Our clampdown on government credit cards will deliver savings that can be used to drive our Plan for Change – securing our borders, getting the NHS back on its feet and rebuilding Britain.’

Just reading a summary, it sounds like this guy was a prophet, especially with the arabs owning half of london and mosques everywhere, which most people would have seen as laughable in the mid 70s. The only part he got wrong was the timeline.

It has been well over a decade since I read it but I found it worthwhile. The first half is a piece of literary criticism on 1984, if that interests anyone.

Burgess was fascinated by Arabic culture his entire life, even writing a Persian translation of Eliot's The Waste Land. He debated converting to Islam when he was working in Malaya and thought he was dying. He was a cradle Catholic and had a medieval disposition, with an attraction to big systems and power, so I understand why he contemplated it. There can be an allure to any religion when you find yourself in one of the countries it dominates, especially when you are at your weakest point.

There is a lot of funny references to Islam in Scruton, who likes and loathes the religion, though it seems, as with homosexuality, he is trying to balance his philosophical principles with social nicety. His The West and The Rest has a very good chapter on Islamic Law, worth reading.

Exactly and Starmer fails to realize what happens to people post-conscription, they love uprising. So allegedly that call to the Supreme Court on Friday was an emergency meeting where they reprimanded him about his spending and also not calling things to vote. Their chief concerns were the Chagos and the 100-year deal with Ukraine. They told him to reign it in and call votes and they are going to challenge the Chagos deal and the 100-year Ukraine deal. The documents are probably sealed due to Starmer because I imagine it was humiliating.

The sun has appeared here and it's time to talk again about how shorts are not an acceptable part of any school uniform once the child is older than seven. I saw two young women this morning in the streets who genuinely appeared to be in their pants. This is not uniform. I don't know what the point is in pretending a school has a uniform code if hot pants and pelvic pelmets are permitted. This is neither practical nor warm enough to learn in. They don't even wear tights any more and the expanse of white lumpy thigh is both inappropriate for their age and displays a general lack of mirrors in their home. I cannot believe the absolute state young people freely go about in post pandemic. Teenage boys in shorts in the winter look like fucking retards and should also be compelled to wear trousers like normal people. I object in principle to the concept that a 'uniform' of any description includes any form of trackies, I don't care if it's described as a 'fleece sweatshirt'. Either make them dress appropriately or just give up this pretence of a fucking uniform. They look like failed Grange Hill extras. Wear fucking ankle length trousers, a shirt, a tie, a school jumper, for both genders. All of lumpy and loose fitting cut. You are there to learn, not to gawp. The uniform is supposed to help them learn and focus, not look as much like wee fannies as possible.

Joking aside, if we did this, we would have legit violence on the streets inside a few years. There really aren't any jobs available to young people anymore that pay enough to get out the house. You take a bunch of disaffected people, make them fit, disciplined, and give them access to firearms; and then dump them en masse back into a broken society, you're going to end up with violent criminal gangs at best. Soldiers are still the same people they were going in, but they just have a little button on their head they can flip to make them do things rather than go 'Nah, fuck that, that's pointless.'

It's like banning abortions in a way, you can do it for sure, and you would then have essentially no abortions. What happens next though is just 1800's gangs of feral children knifing people in the stre-Oh. Hmmmmmmmmmm. Bad comparison maybe.

I don't actually know if there is a real 'solution' to the current state of the UK. Our economy is fucked. It's completely fucked. We would need to gut our civil service, build a new one, and then reform an entirely new government to make it not fucked at this point. Even then, it's going to take years. We may just end up with a lost generation where huge swathes of people know no real work, and have no real future. I know there's this idea of 'pull yourself up by the bootstraps' that a lot of people have here, where we just tell people to stop whinging; and I get it, because I've never not had a job. The longest I've been out of work was 8 months, and I was going completely insane by the end of it. So I get why people say to just get out there and try. However young people have been fundamentally sold a lie, that if they work hard, try hard, they get rewarded for it. That's not true. It's not been true for a while, and I think a lot of British people - in this thread as well - are deluded about it. People see £30K as a good wage. That's poverty at best; and most jobs don't pay that. There is no frontal progression, you have to just keep moving jobs; and unfortunately most jobs are down souf where it's extremely expensive just to live.

If we're at that point, we're a failed state and the move shouldn't be to get a job, it should be to either get out the country and go literally anywhere else in Europe, or to start shooting politicians in the street. I get why a lot of people just give up. I don't think it's a good idea to give up, and I always think 'Yeah, it's hard, but what's the alternative? I just rot?". I'm old now (29), but my parents will often mention how they have a house on their property I can move into if I want to, and not have to worry about bills. My family are great, but living with my parents at 30 would drive me insane in a way I can't actually articulate, even if there were any jobs in my field near them.

At some point, we do have to accept that the country is in a bad state, and no amount of wishful thinking, gumption, pull yourself up, can do attitude, perseverance and discipline can change the reality that there are 5 jobs, and 10 people. Someone is getting fucked over and losing out. Suggesting that people simply accept that they will work dead end subsistence jobs that will never amount to anything, just so they can pay someone else's mortgage through inflated rent, high taxes, and bullshit price gouging is pissing on someones face and then getting annoyed when then call you a cunt.

The irony is, we do in fact have starving poverty. Ignore the fat birds on the news complaining about how they can't get their fifteenth gregg's pastie; they probably have media contacts. There are thousand of British citizens, right now, who do not know where their next meal is coming from, so even that cope is out of date.

I've lived through recessions and contractions, and I've lived through grinding poverty when I was a kid. None of that was as bad as things are now. Economically, this country is so far down the sewer that I can see blackpool beach and socially it is so torn apart that there is no longer a common English demos, let alone the more nebulous British one. We are atomised and isolated, surrounded by constant condemnation for merely existing. More than at any time in history, this country is sitting on the verge of revolution. It's like Argentina in the 40s, absent the powerful military (though Starmer seems set on re-creating even that part of the puzzle with his conscription ideas). We may well be living under a military junta by 2050.

The one upside of a revolution is that it clears out much of the rot, but the downside is that the people who end up in power are the sort of people who think that the solution to every problem in life is to shoot it.

The alternative to revolution is the emergence of a faction within the existing system that seeks to tear it apart root and branch and reconstitute it in a new form. It has happened before. It can happen again, and god willing it happens soon. I don't want to live through a revolution. I know too many people who have.
