A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Even the Labour predecessors, the Whigs, were rabid non-Anglicans who had an urge to impose puritanism on the population at large unlike the comparatively mild and largely indifferent High-Church Anglican Tories. While the Tories aren't indifferent anymore, I think there's a nice continuity in the urge to impose morality from the self defined left side of UK politics.

The Tories have, oddly, been marked in modern history with a surprisingly tolerant outlook on others within the UK (exception perhaps to Northern Ireland, but that's a can of worms for another day) But they never got the credit for this.

I'd point out that a couple of those are popular misconceptions; the Equality Act was passed by the Brown Ministry and received Royal Assent about a month before the General Election, so all the Tories did was not revoke it. Gay marriage was a Lib Dem policy that David Cameron backed during the coalition, but the Conservative party did not have a formally declared stance on the policy and a majority of Tory MPs voted to oppose. Also basically everyone since Blair can be blamed for colluding in covering up the scope of the rape gangs.
Don't disagree with the rest of your post though, they're mostly just different flavours of neoliberal.

Please be patient, I have autism, but The Liberals descended from the Whigs. Oddly they mostly became Tories when the Liberals collapsed, like Churchill did.

Double post, because fuck the mods, but migrant rape gangs have been a thing that was ignored since the 60s, Blair just opened the floodgates and just let even more of the buggers in.

It is purity-spiralling when you start accusing people of not being "real" conservatives because of small disagreements in beliefs like same-sex marriage, allowing women the right to vote and describing a politician as being useless due entirely to their skin colour or sex instead of judging them by their politics. Kemi is to be distrusted because she's a politician, not because she's black.

She should be distrusted for being a politician. She should be discounted from being even that based on the colour of her skin. Sorry man, but it really is a simple case of very basic friend/enemy distinction. You can't be a British person, let alone a British politician if you can't clear the very first hurdle of 'Are you ethnically British.' Everything after that should be judged as well, but the first part is rather fundamental. Race and ethnicity exist and they matter if you're not ethnically European at the least you should not be here, let alone have power here.

Especially as every single instance of 'muh based wog' has turned out to be just as bad if not worse than predicted.

Sorry man. I'm not going to play gay semantic games. We all know that the British are the Anglo-saxons and the celts of the British Isles. Anyone not that, isn't British. You know this, I know this, everyone knows this and anyone that pretends not to is arguing for the obliteration of the British people and should be ignored.

If you're not British and are some flavour of brown, I'm sorry for your situation, you should go out the country. You don't belong.

I think this is a really good example for people touting the 'muh based wog' thing to see. From 'It doesn't matter that she's black' to trying to have the debate about if the British people are even real in less than 5 posts. I'm sure you're going to do a 'Ah but see I was just trying to prove a point!' thing. But I honestly don't care. The existence of the British isn't up for debate, anyone that thinks it is, shouldn't be listened to.
