A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Honestly as someone working in the NHS I cannot wait to see the collapse too. I expect something similar to it will happen with denistry but I am worried about the good hospitals because the transition to an insurance based model will be brutal. I have worked at some of the best hospitals with brilliant staff and an excellent turn around. I expect these places to be beacons for skilled people and then the lesser skilled will be at the less notable facilities. I give it about 5 years or less.

I have lived around Eastern Europeans for most of my life, they are honestly pretty solid and most make great attempts at intergration along with being informative especially the women. I have talked a lot about their opinions on our country and Ukraine etc and they are all pretty candid.

In a shocking turn of events, the BBC have done something resembling actual investigative journalism for once, and reported on an apparent scheme by Severn Trent water to use the most jewish of accounting tricks to essentially conjure £1.5billion for the books: https://archive.is/LW97r

The complex accounting trick started in March 2017 when a shell company, with no money or assets, called Severn Trent Trimpley was set up as part of the group. Another Severn Trent company called Severn Trent Draycote - which owns the water company - agreed to buy Trimpley for £2.
Trimpley then issued additional shares and Draycote bought them for a staggering £3bn.
No money actually changed hands, however, as Draycote paid Trimpley with a £3bn loan note - effectively an IOU. But, on paper, Trimpley immediately appeared to be worth £3bn because it had the IOU.
Severn Trent Water then acquired 49% of Trimpley - and that investment was valued in the water company's accounts at £1.47bn. A hugely valuable asset appears to have been created for Severn Trent Water out of thin air.

Credit to the BBC, they've been doing a significant amount of this recently. I cannot think off the top of my head, but I know I've noticed a lot of very good original investigation work on their news pages. I think the exposure of a boat smuggling gang in Germany was a big one recently, which actually led to arrests and convictions.

It's restoring my trust in the BBC if they're actually going boots on the ground which none of our other domestic 'news' organisations seem to do anymore, instead they just copy and paste from Reuters.

May want to double check Private Eye didn't do the leg work first. Would not be the first time the larger media organisations shove them aside and start caring about stories. Know Private Eye was taking a pop at that company's bonuses about 6 months ago.

Hislop needs to crack and embrace a KiwiFarms format so old articles are possible to dig into by people outside of his underlings.

So, if countries within the EU can do this... why can't we?

Because when they naturalise they will hopefully vote with the Labour whip.

The problem is, that horse is long out of the stable thanks to October 7th. They will vote left wing, and they will vote for the Worker's Party because Labour didn't call for a pogrom.

Hislop is a bit of a weirdo. His crusade for free speech is limited to his own speech and he’s happy for other people to be locked up.
Hislop put his and the eye's entire weight behind Wakefield's retarded, fundamentally unscientific MMR scaremongering, the fallout from which has made the study of vaccine side effects so utterly toxic that nobody is willing to risk even mentioning the idea, out of the fear of being branded a vaccine denier pariah. There's a direct line from that to the rona madness. He can hang with the rest of the media-political class.

So did anything actually come of this farmers protest?! Are we really going to be out done by the leaf's and snails yet again?!

They were protesting again today, outside westminster. More than 600 tractors running back and forth in central london. Protests in edinburgh, cardiff, and belfast as well. They're just getting started.

Hislop can be disliked for his oversights on occasion but Private Eye have been investigating various issues for years. These stories were finally picked up by other papers/documentaries and gained wider recognition: postmaster scandal, John Smythe and the Anglican Church scandal, expenses scandal, Qatari funding, Levinson inquiry and state censorship, the Royal family's private income, etc. The list goes on. Still one of the good ones in my view, but like every editor, they tend to have their own priorities.
I have lived around Eastern Europeans for most of my life, they are honestly pretty solid and most make great attempts at intergration along with being informative especially the women.
Met and worked with many eastern Europeans and not had a bad experience yet. I like how direct they are and their 'lets get on with it' attitude - especially Poles.
I give it longer if for no other reason than people have been saying ‘it will collapse in a couple of years’ for forever.
Probably because successive governments have been emptying buckets of public funds into this leaky collender of an organization every four years.

On assisted dying - since my longer post was purged in the Destiny debacle - it's a clear case of thin end of the wedge in my view. I think that the likelihood of the UK implementing a better system with more handrails compared to the disastrous attempts by Belgium and Canada is remote. Especially when paired with the inefficient, overworked and overstretched NHS as it currently stands. How do standards of care and hospice services improve when there is a well lit road towards an 'easy way out'? Even more so given the latest scandal with power of attorney and coercion of vulnerable people. How many years before the definitions are watered down, 6 months becomes an indefinite term, and teenagers are being euthanized because they got depressed? Only time will tell I suppose.

>Highly educated
>Syrian

lol, lmao even. The place is a shit hole. It's like hiring the best Lawyer in Papa New Guinea.
I've only ever known one Syrian particularly well and he was a very decent person, principled to the point of suffering for it and a talented guy who worked hard. I can't really speak to the general case because I'd have to know a Hell of a lot of people to do that. But I can back up the other posters about skilled and hard-working Syrian exiles being a thing. It's not racism to want to restrict large numbers of people immigrating into your country. It becomes it when you say someone must be like X because that's their background.

He was an avowed atheist, btw. Can't imagine he'll be especially welcome under the new regime.

Private eye were fantastic - I’ve really seen them change recently to be far more young and woke and I don’t think it’s been a positive change. When they get their teeth into something they’re pretty good.

I know quite a few absolutely top notch Iranians and some great Gurkhas. I still dont want their entire countries migrating here. We can take a very few, and that’s it. I hate how the left really pushes this idea that if you don’t want mass immigration you somehow detest all these people. I’d rather they had their own safe country they can live in. I’m sure many are very decent. But we still can’t take millions of them and some we shouldn’t take at all. There’s no reason for anyone from Pakistan to be here.
