A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

And you gotta remember this only classes babies who's parents weren't born here, when you take into account the foreigners who's grandparents invaded our country and the babies are second generation I bet the actual figure is closer to 2 out of 3!

This is why we got some prick like Sadiq Khan as the mayor of our capital, give it a couple of decades with this birth rate and the white English are gonna be a minority in our own country!

This is absolutely disgusting, how these people call themselves Christian is beyond me, it's these cover ups in the Catholic and C of E churches that turn people away from Christianity. All his excuses when any normal person would go straight to the police if they knew of any wrongun behaviour.

I'm Christian myself, although obviously not Catholic or C of E, so this ain't a witch hunt on my behalf but far as I'm concerned he should be stripped not just of his position but of any role in leading a ministry.

Although what id really like is anyone who knows of any wrongun behaviour and doesn't contact police to be arrested for aiding and abetting as think how many kids wouldn't of been abused if police were involved years ago.

I don't know how he lives with himself frankly. Imagine having to look yourself in the mirror every day knowing you were responsible for allowing the abuse of children. The Archbishop of Nonce Sympathy should arrange an appointment to meet his God as soon as possible.

I was dragged through c of e as a child and hated it, not because of the faith but because of the formality. Was year's later I stumbled across a different denomination and things felt so much more natural.
And after decades of hearing these wrong un cover ups going on with the Catholic and c of e churches id never wanna be part of that, that's my own personal view and to be honest I don't see much wrong with my view.

Okay I'm gonna baselessly speculate and say it's equal odds Pentecostals (including freaky nigerian nonsense) Adventists (incorporating J*hovah's witnesses) or maybe an outside bet like some Plymouth Brethren Offshoot (like the Jesus Army Baptist psychos).
Whichever it is, you will never be a real Christian. You have no magisterium, you have no grace, you have no apostolic succession. You are a heathen man twisted by heresy and schism into a crude mockery of faith's perfection blah blah blah.

Though to the bible bashers credit at least they maintain a demographic stability, pretty sure the CoE is in official terminal state now having to sell off property because it cannot even pretend to afford the upkeep.

Haha actually liked the end of your first paragraph as it's probably what some more traditional denominations think when in realty pointless traditions are discarded in favour of focusing on scripture.

And yeah you got it with the first guess, crazy nigger shit aside theirs a reason Pentecostal, Charismatic, Evangelical, etc are growing while C of E in decline.

The speaking in tongues looks fun and the snake petting is cool I can see definitely see the appeal, muh spiritual gifts is a bit too Harry Potter grifty for me though especially when the prosperity gospel stuff comes up, but at least you guys actually believe in something. The memories that stick with me about being dragged to church services always include how obviously nobody actually wanted to be there.

I give the speaking in tongues a miss, might be due to me joining later in life but can't help but think if sound like a nutter. But the nice thing is I might be the only one praying in silence at times but no one thinks anything of it, as far as everyone concerned you do what feels right for yourself, nothings forced on you. As for snakes I think that's just a crazy USA thing, I've never seen or even heard of it going on over here.

Yeah I got plenty of those memories myself, as I mentioned I hated all the pointless traditions and the divide their feels between the vicar and the church members. There's none of that with any of the Pentecostal preachers I've met, no ones above anyone else.

How righteous and moral would the Church be if they publicly and loudly held an Inquisition-style conclave where they just excoriate and completely condemn these freaks and hand them over to the police after stripping them of their habits.
