A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

That's easy, they just pay more tax to support the people that don't.
 
This won't be a surprise to some but I did a short stint working for a local council (council tax and business rates) and say with some confidence that ending SPD is utterly pointless. The amount of revenue it could create is negligible and the ill will generated cataclysmic. I know despair is probably the only thing he gets erect over, but this would overwhelmingly affect our overlords of peace and I think it's unlikely for that reason alone.

SPD is awarded on an honor system, so rest assured that most of those single mums are actually 'single' mums.

If they wanted to do something actually useful they could increase the top level of council tax support to 100% (currently 86.5%) - counterintuitive I know but recipients pay under £20 per month and it's just not worth what it costs to chase.

Or look at business rates - in terms of revenues it's many times larger than council tax and the fraud is astronomical.

Please don't read my comments as support by the way, I think the British feudal state is a disgrace. If anyone cares for the trivia: the laws governing local authority taxes start with the Poor Laws of 1601 then jerry rigged for modernity with additional pieces of legislation. Like everything else it needs serious reform but no politician wants to lift that rock so they just tinker and pretend it makes a jot of difference.

I suspect this is partially a shitty attempt at putting a plaster on the housing crisis - make living by yourself ever more unaffordable to encourage people to crowd into HMOs or in the case of single retirees, downsize from the empty-nest family home into something on a lower band.
 
Britain had a chance to save itself by voting Reform. The majority of Brits couldn't be arsed to vote and the few that did make the effort voted fucking Labour or Conservative. I love Britain and it breaks my heart to see what has happened to Britain, but the British deserve what they fucking get.

15 year olds were sent to fight and die at the Somme and they couldn't be bothered to walk down to the end of the road and vote.

People did vote for reform though. they only got 5 MPs due to the shitty PR system we're forced to use.
Reform got 600,000 more votes than the useless cunts in the lib dems but only get a fraction of the seats

I don't think Reform will fix anything, but even I still voted for them. Democracy has always been pretty fake and gay, but our modern democractic system seems to be the fakest and the gayest with how it all shakes out. There is unfortunately no subsystem in place to account for 'all the people in charge are cunts, and no real alternative exists' which isn't dragging out all the political classes and pulling them behind cars on the M6 until the red smear becomes a bone smear.

Business rates fuck over a lot of starter small businesses. It’s part of the reason why the high street of every small town is just charity shops, pawns shops, and money laundering “vape” shops. Even the bookies closing down.

That and council tax needs scrapped and replaced with something less retarded and damaging.
 
I can understand - not agree with but understand - reform voters as protest voters, but how is anyone seriously arguing that prime minister Nigel 'Clacton on the World Stage' Farage would be a good idea?

I went to the Youtube video he referenced in this video and found a comment matching exactly what he says, "WHY did you kill Larry and the St. Johns infront of Clementine? WHY?"
